I own this camera (on the German market named EOS 30V) since a couple of years, and actually, due to being slightly fed up with digital photographing, I am "rediscovering" this amazing camera. I'm really fond of the technic, the handling and the design. I will especially make use of S/W-cartridges and I'm looking forward to see the first results. Regards from Germany Hans-Joachim
Should be getting this one soon...EF lenses are still very well used by all Canon cameras till this day-I was looking for this video, but was not able to find it here...great you decided to do this review!
The DEP setting isn't aperture bracketing, because only one image is taken. It's a form of aperture priority based on the zone you want kept in focus. You half-press the shutter, aimed at the nearest area you want in focus. Then re-aim at the farthest area you want in focus and half-press the shutter again. The next time you trip the shutter, it'll pick an aperture needed to keep that zone in focus.
Great review - thank you for posting. I have two Canon EOS 50 E' s which also use an earlier version of EYE CONTROL AF - it works great - Please Canon bring this feature back !
EF-S is lenses for Crop sensors. This camera is fullframe so it does not have this mount. EF-S mount launched in 2003 btw. It might be that this camera doesnt take EF lenses with IS. But it wouldnt hurt to try(just turn off IS)
I think the missing spot-metering was because it was considered a "pro feature". The same holds true with viewfinder coverage (consumer and prosumer cameras usually had around 90-95%, while the pro-lines had 100%) Canon has always made sure to keep a few things only for the high-end lines. ^^
I bought an EOS 33V, 7N for outside the US market. I have kinda fallen in love with the little camera. It simpler than the EOS 3, but has the best features. Then a couple of day ago, I bought a bundle for a couple of lenses and a flash. The lot came with an EOS 7N. Virtually the same camera except for the badge. And, it takes 123 batteries instead of the 2CR5. Great video, thanks.
I picked up the ELAN ii at a thrift store for 8 dollars American. Threw a 2cr5 battery and it came to life. I found a battery grip for 6 bucks plus shipping to get rid of the 2cr5 and am halfway through it's first roll of film. I have barely scratched the surface of all the things it'll do. Personally, I like it.
Hi, I own the Canon 50e (Elan), the silver and black version, same as your review model, and I love it, eye focus works well for me and I wear glasses!! It's a good looking camera and I love handling it. Great review of this classic.
You can do multiple exposure with this camera. You can actually do up to 9 before it will advance the film. You just have to press the function button and go to the right setting. You also have to do that before you take the picture so it knows not to advance the film.
Absolutely! In some ways, the 7e is actually better. Fit, finish and build quality were generally found to be superior on the 7e. The 7ne does have a backlight for the LCD and some minor metering differences that I don't think will be of much consequence. I don't think you will be loosing anything by going with the 7e.
Sorry, wasn't meant to be a how to use your camera video. However, through a super easy and quick search, I found the manual on-line at the Canon website. I have posted the link in the description. Thanks for watching!
You can try c-list and ebay etc. However, I did notice that KEH has a few. They might be a little more than if you try to hunt for one but you do get a warranty from them. Please let me know how it works out.
Trying to decide between this and the EOS 3 which doesn't have the AF assist light or the onboard flash. How much will that AF assist light help? Maybe you can review the EOS 3 next?
Wish you have showed some use on the function keys on the back and sometime on the LED window, instead of saying how great it is. Bought my used w/o a manual
Actually it has "spot" metering according to Canon's website. "Light Metering: (1) Evaluative (2) 10% partial metering linkable to the focus point by Custom Function control, (3) Center-weighted average metering." "10% partial" is "spot".
What's the AF accuracy on it? I mean, there is no AF micro adjustment so what happens if it needs adjustment (i.e., you get Front/Back focusing with lenses)?
Hi! I have a question. It might sound dumb but just want to get a specific answer for it :) Does this type of cameras allow double exposure? I know it winds up automatically for what I can see, but I was wondering if there was any way to trick it and make the film not advance in between frames. Thanks!!
the Achilles heel of these cameras (and the older Elan II series) is the film back latch. One small drop or bang can break the flimsy plastic tab that holds the oor closed. Go on ebay and 75% of these cameras have a broken latch. They dont make the replacement part anymore, so you have to canabalize another good camera. Great starter camera, but BE CAREFUL
"break the flimsy plastic tab that holds the door closed" - What helps this and others such as the famous Nikon film camera (the F100), is to apply a small dab of Super Lube synthetic grease (clear) to the hook on the door. Doing this helps to avoid the 'dry-drag' force that happens with aging plastic.
so, this camera can mount lenses with the red dot, not the white dot right? i have a tamron 17-50 non image stabilized for my eos rebel, will that lens work with this camera???
I think Canon should come up with a very advanced Film SLR once in a while. If Nikon is having their F6, which is technologically far more advanced than Canon, then Canon should have something like that sort to level against it.
Hey man, love your videos. Not sure if you still read youtube stuff but I'm pretty sure someone else has downloaded and reuploaded this video under the account 'camera and photo' - not sure if that's just some kind of 'topic' rather than an account? still, the thought is there haha. Cheers man
You can use any EF lens and several EF lenses do have image stabilization that does work just fine. You cannot use any EF-S lens as these are designed for APS sensor size digital cameras. I happen to have an Elan II with a Canon 28-135 image stabilized lens which works fine for me. I also have a 40D which can use both EF and EF-S lenses.
I take that back there are several Tamron and Sigma lenses which came out years before the 7/7n which you can not use without a firmware upgrade on the lens. However and Canon EF lens ever made will work.
yes, image stabilization works fine, because this happens in the lens, not in tbe camera. EF-S lens are made for the APS-C sensor. You may use them, but it will result in havy vignetting i you use a large aperture.
You can use the EF lenses for sure. However, Image stabilization will most likely not work. As I understand it, some of the EF-S (designed for APS-C sensors) lenses may work but again without the image stabilization and you will probably encounter significant vignetting. Thanks for watching!
Twostones00 Right, to my surprise the IS works even on the first EOS 650 which will soon be 30 years old! The only exception is EF-M but Canon doesn't count it in the EOS series anyway, it's the only EF lens compatible manual focus only camera. Also electronic focusing doesn't work there (like the new STM lenses).

An important point you missed, this camera works with E-TTL (digital) flash, and can shoot High Speed Sync.

There is a way for spot metering. Turn off the auto focus switch on lens. The camera will meter the center square only.

now that I have this camera, I want to get a good flash solution and I would really like to have wireless and maintain the E-TTL.
I wonder if eye control autofocus will be brought back in the 5D X...
Very cool, and what will be the diference for the 7?

Is there any feature for manual focus?
Where do you find all your cameras?
Do you have a review of the Nikon N90x, F100 or the Nikon N75?

Tape can fix that issue. Easy fix.

The last flagship was the EOS-1V no? but that is 10x more expensive

Where can I find one camera like that ?
Can you use an ef-s lens if image stabilization is off? Or are they completely incompatible?
Doug Tolman EF-S lens aren’t compatible with with it.
Even if you could it would have black corners in the pictures.
I take that back, you are right, this was the last!
is the 1v pro model up from this much better than this camera
Is it true that 7N/7NE has quieter shutter than 7/7E?
Great video...I need to get one of these!
Can you record video on these camera's. I just received one. So I didn't know much about them. & does it have a USB connector on it.
Sorry no video, no usb. These are film only.
Awe man 😞
Is this shooting video ?
Can you use canon's newer lenses on these? Like the 70-200 is II?

Does this work with L series lenses?
Nelson Park yes with any EF lens.
Great camera - try the EOS 3!
Bought mine last week for 14.50.
got one, thanks for the idea
got a 7ne body for 50 bucks on ebay! loving it with my 50mm 1.8
wud this be as good as one of the say canon 7ds in digital?
The Elan 7 shares most of its technology with the contemporary 10D. So don't expect 7D level performance and craftmanship.
It's full frame though!
Nice review.
Just got one for $5.. and the guy threw a 28mm f2.8 MkI in with it.. Couldn't believe my luck!
thankyou
I just bought one used for $200 from B&H.
Awkwardly I was looking at the camera you just bought, then it disappeared. Found another one at eBay though, haha. Just wanted to point out.
1V was the last professional, this was the last "prosumer"
Paid $30 for mine. :)
