I bought this camera brand new in 2007 when studying photography at uni (digital was banned for the first half of the degree) we didn't use 35mm a huge amount and moved to 4x5. The camera got lost somehow. A friend of mine was after a camera bag and I had one down the garage I hadn't used in over 10 years. Opened up the bag and what do I find? The 30v... Near brand new condition waiting for me to use again. That was last night, I already have batteries in it and film ready to go. Thanks for the vid you made years ago!
Nice production on your video. You look really happy. Your enthusiasm levels were high. This was really a nice video. You appear to be a transparent person, because when you are not happy, it shows in your videos. Keep making these kinds of videos, because there seem to be not that many people reviewing the things you review. Lastly, I love the fact that you show how and what you do in the darkroom. I think that is so neat when you incorporate that element into your videos. Keep up the good work. I continue to look forward to your videos.
Michael, thanks so much for the feedback. I've always been annoyed at RUclipsrs that dial their enthusiasm to 11 in every episode, it doesn't seem authentic. Your comment proves I'm communicating clearly, so I appreciate that a lot. People need to see me struggle, screw up, and show dissatisfaction. I use to have longer montages in the darkroom but after about 60 episodes of it I've shortened it, good to know it's still enjoyable. I'd like to drill a camera mount to the ceiling and other spots so I can free up floor apace and get some new angles.
I agree Michael and I enjoy this channel because there is a honest and open person presenting! It is always beneficial understand the methodology and mood of the person making the images as it impacts upon how you read them. I hate 'plastic' vloggers/RUclipsrs who gush unearthly excitement over everything, how can you get over excited about a tripod FFS LOL.
Hi Azriel! Great video, I can tell you are happy with this Elan; great images. Just to let you Know that you can remove a partial roll, load another roll, and later came back to the same roll. This is what you do: The Elan II/IIe uses an Infrared (IR) frame counter that allows you to remove a roll of partially used film by pressing the rewind button, and with custom function #2 set to "1" the film leader will be left out. You can then mark on the canister how many frames have been used. When you reload it into the camera to use the remaining unused frames, set the Command Dial to M, the shutter at 1/4000, put the lens cap on, set the focus switch on the lens to MF, and fire the shutter until you get back to the same frame number you had when you removed the film. There is no need to waste an extra frame to guarantee that you won’t overlap the last exposure. The IR frame counter will place you back to the same exact position every time without frame overlap.
These Elan cameras are really fun to use ! I had an Elan II from 1999-2004 which served me well, until I got into Digital. In 2012 I decided to replace my Elan II which by now had deterorated in the closet, with an Elan 7e. I rarelely used this camera until now when I decided to resucitate my darkroom and get back into film. The only problem with the Elan 7e is that it does not have a backlit LCD !? Everything else works fine. The newer 7Ne/30V/7S does have a backlit LCD, plus it has a couple of extra features, so I'm thinking about moving up to that and making it my main AF film camera. I owned the fancier "semi-pro" Canon EOS 3, but it was BIG and cluncky, was WAY to noisy and the shutter was super-sensitive. If you sneezed the shutter would go OFF. I sold it on eBay...
Hi Azriel! Great video!!! I have own and use my Elan 7NE for many years, and it was my main camera until this year I got my hands on a A2. I'm blown away with the A2/A2E/EOS 5 , because of a larger and brighter finder, a wonderful larger body and all the same features of the Elan 7.
I got the same set-up with 105mm + hp5 for awhile now. Really perfect for taking shots for my family. Esp for an energetic toddler. AF and meter is excellent. Have fun with it man. Love your channel.
The 30V is as good as it gets. The EOS flagship cameras are far too large but the 30V does everything you could reasonably want to do with a film camera, in a much smaller package. The matte finish and raised lettering on the dials is a nice slick touch too.
Good work, always nice to have your eyes opened to a new era of camera. All my film stuff has been pretty much on manual cameras and I have never really investigated the 'cross over' genre of bodies that showcase the quality of film alongside the ensuing electronic era of DSLR's. Closest I have is a Contax G2 (mainly because I can use the excellent glass elsewhere) but I am now going to look for a contemporary body from Nikon to the 30V so as I can use my manual Nikon glass. Any suggestions welcomed!
Only Nikon I have really shot with is the F50, a mid to late 90's model. I think what's appealing for me right now is having a unified system. Switching from digital to analog and back without changing how I shoot.
Great video Azriel! I’m a Canon FD shooter but I have owned a few EOS cameras in the past. The most modern EOS camera, I’ve owned, was an EOS 10 and that was 20 years ago! I have several A1 bodies and an AE1.
Great Videos, you rekindled my nostalgia. Subscribed. :) I had bought Elan 7e (previous version of this cam) around 2013, really enjoyed shooting film with it. I wanted a film camera which was modern and could use my existing EOS digital gear. This just did it, perfectly. Sadly it stopped working few years back, midway, with my film stuck in it. Regret it so much. Am actively looking for the 7ne/30v, sadly no good used market in lndia.
Hey, not sure if you figured this out since, but it could at least help a viewer: You can change the focus point selection to use the wheels instead. Check the manual PDF for the custom function explanation for it. Nice video, cheers
Thanks for the tip Gabriel. I don't remember this video much anymore but I am aware of using the whel to select focus points on Canon as I used one for quite a few years and most of the controls are the same.
FYI, if you haven't tried the date imprint function yet, this is your last year to do so with a correct date. This and the older Elan II QD models only go to 2019.
I found one for a great price on EBay and haven’t put it down. It’s great to hold, it feels really nice to hold and I love using. Still getting used to the custom functions and eye control.
Zach Mueller Welcome to Canada ;) There were signs and the cows were tagged. On the way back one was walking across the road, saw my car and stopped at the yellow line. Pretty crazy.
That lens is at least twice its weight. This camera mount is if I recall plastic... I remember the sales guy at B&H where I got mine from recommended not to mount anything exceeding 400g What do you think?
That eos 30 remind me of my 2nd camera, an eos 50 (Ellan II) back in 1999. It felt very high-tech and pro, specially after my eos 500N's plastic feel (Rebel G). Great photos!
I have one in Argentine is Canon EOS 30 Eye Control i have a Battery Grip BP-300 too and a Remote Switch RS-60E3. In 2004 shooted 50 Rolls of Fuji in Spain with the Canon 20-35 mm !! It was fantastic lens Thank for your vids and your time!!! Enjoy that wonderful machine!
Great video as always(i don't yotube in chronological order :D ) If i will be in Canada someday i would love to borrow you my dynax 7 for test and review, lot of people forgot how minoltas were important to the industry. You are doing great work for film photography on YT, maybe some of youraudience start do film photography on their own thanks to you :). Greetings from Poland :D
Did anyone of you shot film with a Canon ef 40 mm stm? If so, could you please give some feedback? I like it with digital. This video made me think about getting a eos to try out this glass on film, and this made me think about the 'slap you' comment. Eh eh.
I love my Rebel 2000, but it feels like a hollow plastic toy compared to an old mechanical SLR or even my 80D or EOS RP. I'll definitely pick up an ELAN7 if I find one for a deal.
I have an EOS5 that I really like, which has some obvious similarities to your 30V It undoubtedly gives me better images than most of my film cameras, with the notable exception being my Zorki 4K. But as one is a SLR and one a Rangefinder it's not a valid comparison, but comparing the 5 to a 1000 FN (or NF) is. As much as the 5 is great the 1000 is...erm...ok, not bad, but no better than you Rebel 2000 (and it also pulls out the entire roll of film). FP is my favourite film, Acros would be if was more affordable, but I love the tones of FP4+ which you brought out really well (was it HC-110 developer?). You got some great images there, loved the water ones and I'm really pleased you have that go to camera. A brilliant video, which I really enjoyed.
Azriel Knight I usually do use Rodinal with FP4 because it was the first developer I ever used with it. But I've got a roll I shot last week which i was thinking of using D-76, but now I might just buy some HC-110.
hey az, nice to watch another episode. this was a cool one. I am searching for an analog camera with auto-focus, I should flm with a praktica L2, but I need AF to try on streetphotography. I was tipped that eos 1 was very good (I could guess that one), but that eos 3 is even better. also that there is a minolta that is even better then eos 3, according to that guy, but I dont remember wich one it was. I might also consider 30v now. just need to find a good deal. :D do canon EF lens fit on it? by the way, I have posted 2 photos for you last friday. I hope you like them and to see them in a future episode. :D
Very nice video, Azriel! Love your style. Great images. You look right out of Breaking Bad standing in your lab with your lab coat. ;) Plus, Sonic the Hedgehog! :D Love the camera as well. I use it all the time for 35mm portraits.

Hey Azriel! I have one of these, but it was marketed as the EOS 7s here in Japan. If you like the scroll wheels for AF selection, set C.Fn-11 to 2.
OMG really? (checks) YOU BEAUTIFUL BASTARD!!! THANK YOU!

LOL agreed! We get flailing hands or hipsters whispering in their mic.
Those shots were wonderful! The smoke and atmosphere of the day really added to the look and feel of the images!!
Thanks Nick!
Nice shots of the river, the hazy light softens it all down.
Thanks :)

I picked one that looked like it had never been used. It is an excellent camera.
Nice find!
I had that camera, and if I recall correctly there's a custom function which allows you to change focussing points directly via d-pad...
I honestly don't remember.
@@AzrielKnight Should be written in the user manual :)

Awesome. That L glass is nice. Super micro contrast and tonal value. Now I may have to look for one. I could slap you for that. Lol
jdebultra LOL, sorry.
I have the 7ne with eye focus and use that when I'm shooting film and want to use my EOS lenses
I enjoyed using the eye focus on the A2e. haven't tested this one yet.
nice vid, this baby is one of the quietest motorwind SLRs ever. dat mirror slap is rolls royce. one of the rare cams designed for silent operation.
+sghound Agreed! It arguably sounds nicer than my 5D Mark ii! Thanks for watching :)

sorry for out of topic, i would like to know, what song do you use for the intro bumper??
I see you have an Epson scanner also, what size file you get out the 35mm neg? Thanks!

A V500 and I honestly don't remember the differences, except that the 30V feels nicer to me in my hand.
The EOS 30V / Elan 7NE / 7s are all the same camera with different names for different markets.
