- Tutorial video today - lots of MacBook Air laptops out there with a loose or sloppy screen. This generally doesn't progress into a broken hinge like many other laptops do, but it feels nasty to use. Here's how to tighten them up.

Thank you so very much! I am a public educator and since covid has made me rely more on my webcam it was very frustrating that my webcam kept sinking due to this wobbly screen problem. In the computer repair and IT world, to call me a novice is even being generous. I have no business under the hood of my MacBook! However, I am low on funds and this video not only told me what to do but how to do it safely. My issue was 100% the screws on the LCD screen itself. One was just loose inside of the case! I took a huge risk, but in the end, if you are going to do this repair watch this gentleman because if you don't "you'll have a bad day".
"You'll have a bad day" There isn't other way to say it...Keep on the good work!
"and I just dropped the long one" - I felt this one.
Absolute lifesaver! Thank you so much for this detailed guide! its so hard to find a tutorial that is this clear, both verbally and visually clear for us to follow.
Love these videos. Always loved dabbling with IT and these video's just fuel it when I can't work on my own stuff. Keep up the amazing content!
Outstanding and invaluable video! Without this I never would have been able to tighten the loose hinges on my A1466 Macbook Air - THANKS!
Just did my first fix of this kind on my girlfriends macbook air. The screws were super loose. got 2 full turns out of one. I had your video up on my macbook air and followed step by step and you'll be happy to know that I did NOT "have a bad day" lmao..VERY educational and very detailed video. You saved me a lot of money and headaches. Thanks again
Very clear instructions, loved the camera angles that showed all of the minor details. I was able to use this video to fix the loose hinge on my MacBook Air 2015 model. Very much appreciated, thank you so much.
Excellent video; I appreciate that there were a few surprises to deal with along the way rather than staged perfection.
Thank you very much - I'm a long-time Mac tech but Apple never let us work on these, and my poor mom's MBA had this exact issue. I watched a few videos but yours was the most detailed and helpful. Thanks much! Her machine is back up and running with a screen that supports itself.
Outstanding video, thank you so much! Your explanations were incredibly detailed, your instructions were easy to follow, and you did it all at a pace that was easy to follow, thanks!
Thank you so much mate, it was so much easier knowing what to do with you showing it so clearly, cheers pal 👌👌
thanks for the wonderful video, using it as a guide I avoided 'having a bad day', much appreciated.
What a exceptional good channel. You are great
I thank you immensely!
Apple wanted over $799 to replace the battery and fix the hinges, and I just did it for the price of the tools.
Amazing!
Plus I get to keep the tools!
Truly, I thank you.
Micheas
Thanks for this great guide. Thanks to your tips, I didn’t have a bad day and the screen stays in place a little better now. Cheers!
So, only a little better, you didn't fix it completely, did you? I successfully replaced the hinges on my Pro, but Air is a different story.
Amazing video. I was able to follow along with everything and thanks to you I had a good day!
Outstanding!! You are the best. CONGRATS.
Just tightened mine! Thanks a lot for the tutorial! 👍🏾
Thank you so much, worked fantastically for a 2014 MacBook Air
Great video -(excellent explanation). Still helped me in 2023. Much appreciated.
Merci beaucoup pour ces explications !
Un travail clair et fantastique !
Splendide
Great video. Excellent instructions.
Thank you so much for the perfect instructions!
Thank you very much Adamant IT. You provided geat clear detailed instructions.
Thank you for the video, it was very easy to follow.
Thank you for the video - really an invaluable resource.
Very useful, i watched it STEP BY STEP while FIXING my Mac Book Air Lid. GREAT THAK-YOU
Thank you so much! The hinges feel like new again :)
Thanks a lot man, exactly step by step!
Love your videos. Thanks a lot.
Fantastic video, that helped us all the way!!!!! Thanks heaps and our hinge is fixed
Thanks a lot for this great guide!
Just followed this and found the hinges were actually cracked on both sides, so no hope of fixing the loose screen, but brilliant, clear and helpful video. Bonus points for clear English accent.
Great video - really clear. Thank you! 😎
Loved the vid. The part where I had to disconnect the wireless antennas as you showed it... I was starting to get paranoid because of how tiny these are. Could easily pull them off, but to connect them back... it's nuts, almost made me sweat. This vid helped greatly though! :-) Thanks for all you do!
Thank You for a very useful video. I have just done as you did and my MacBook Air got a new life :-)
Great video like always 👍
Well done, sir. 👍🏽
Used your guide to sort out a 2012 Air. I used blue Loctite on the hinge screws during reinstallation, to avoid them backing out as before.
After seeing this ordeal, I'm glad that I have this sort of problem on a Dell Latitude (E6520)... I've been in there, and hinge replacement seemed a great deal easier, with barely anything besides the bottom cover and screen bezel really having to be removed (ordinary Phillips, too). Only the hinges themselves seem a bit hard to come by. Oh well, it's not bothering me that much anyway, and it's better than it was after retightening the screws at least.
Love your channel btw - it basically combines Louis Rossmann, FFcossag and then some. :) I have a feeling we share a few subs...
Great video!!
Thank you so much! Very helpful!
GENIUS. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!
Good job sir. valuable informations. admire
man, you saved me probably 50 GBP for this fix - thx ;-) well presented step by step - thank you
Very good good instructions
If I may provide a couple of points: you do not need to remove the screen to replace the cables. All you need to remove is the aluminum bezel. The camera cable is inset in a channel to left of the LCD. The LCD cable on the right is connected to the bottom of the LCD so the only thing it goes through is the hinge and the wifi antenna plastic. I have done this repair a lot. the most difficult part is two-fold: Not bending the cheap aluminum bezel, and getting the bezel to actually stick to the housing after the repair. I really enjoy your videos and hope my opinion is taken with a grain of salt. looking forward to the next video! Thumbs up!
Got any tips on the Bezel? Because that's the crux of it, yea - taking that guy off without wrecking it and/or the LCD is the tough part. I know it's doable, but it turns a quick job into an event, which is why I chose to advise against it in this video.
Adamant IT I use playing cards most of the time, and a little heat. I just found a new tool from QianLi called a screen disassembler. I have yet to try it but it is basically a piece of metal that is half as thick as a playing card.
@@Adamant_IT I use a painting knife to get started and a thin plastic tool from replacebase for the delicate areas. Soaked in just the right amount of isopropyl alcohol to soften the glue but make sure you don't overdo it as the alcohol can seep behind the screen and leave a mark (ask me how I know :P). Also keep some spare screen rubber gaskets on hand, you'll likely slice through the old one
Great video. My A1466 has screen wobble. I'm going to watch this video until it's memorized, then dive in. Cheers.
Adding lock tight pla glue to the display hinge screws is a good idea.
Good Video! Thanks. I love the technical terms, "SCHMUTZ", and "BITE" (aka torque!). ;-)
Im not going to try this and I do have a floppy screen(just bought a new MB air) but the video was awesome. I like the descriptions.
amazing video
Great video clear and simple to follow. Unfortunately it did not make any difference on my MacBook Air 13 (Early 2015). The screws on the right side were a bit lose and even after applying a bit of Grrrr it made no real difference. Like you getting the black plastic bit off the back wsa a real pain. However all went back together and I did not have a 'Bad Day' LOL.
Congratulation for video!!
Smashing repair graham, i'm sure the customer was happy with it :-D
Hope your business didn't take too much damage over the covid period.
It's been okay, thankfully I'm a one-man-band in a rural area, so I've been able to keep working through the lockdown. UK gov did a good job with taking care of local businesses too - although that's about the only thing they got right.
@@Adamant_IT Yes boris wants a slap for being too slow and fuzzy rules :-(
great video bro
8:50 knowing apple, they did that deliberately
YUUUUP. Also 9:00 "and replacing the LCD on one of these is a bit of a journey." ....and later "Hell to the no". I watched this video several times before attempting the repair...I was just praying to the spirit of Steve Jobs that it was not going to need new hinges.
Just for people trying this at home : DONT FORGET TO UNPLUG THE BATTERY when you remove or prug back in the screen connector. If you forget, most of the time, you damage the backlight circuit and with Apple (not best engenereing), you have 50% chance to send the 19V to CPU and you can say buy to the logic board.
Good looking out. Thanks mate
I fried a i5 and a i7 board because of this
Well, not the best engineering, if your goal is a reliable and user-friendly product.
Very good engineering, when you want to make money.
Good Job!
Bravissimo! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks a lot for this video. But be very carefull because i forgot to disconect battery and in the end I was struggling connecting last to cabels and accidently i touched a something with one off the cabels and saw sparks and smoke and feeling like my mac is gone. But i turned on mac and everything was workingThanks a lot for this video. But be very carefull because i forgot to disconect battery and in the end I was struggling connecting last to cabels and accidently i touched a something with one off the cabels and saw sparks and smoke and feeling like my mac is gone. But i turned on mac and everything was working. What a release.

I love your mannerisms :)
Great tutorial. Worked for me. Only thing, I pulled on the WIFI Antenna as opposed to popping it off. The wire came off from the connector but somehow managed to get it back together. Maybe add a note there so people dont mess that up!
worked PERFECT. my screws on the very inside hinges were very loose. seems like Apple would do well to put some loctite on those screws from the factory.
I've replaced the hinges on a few macbooks like this, you have to remove the aluminium bezel without damaging it or the screen, which is always stressful. Leave it to apple to use cheap hinges that go loose over time AND make them a nightmare to replace.
As other mention, use thread locker to prevent the screws from coming lose again. It's just temp fix, it happen to me.
suddenly i dont mind the wobble
THANX MAN U ARE A GOD!
fantastic video thank you , followed your guide , fixed the screen but it won't turn back on after reconnecting the battery .
I've tried a few times and its plugged in but the little light on the MagSafe plug is not lit either . Any ideas as to what is wrong ?
You should really remove each of the hinge screws and apply a small amount of blue Loctite, and then reseat them. Helps to prevent this issue reoccurring. Great vid, and much appreciated.
Firstly, this video is targeted for a DIY-audience, so most viewers will not have loctite at hand, so in this tutorial, he left it out.
And furthermore: The screws came loose with the factory-applied loctite, and at least in my experience, they really hold well, if you just give them a good turn.
Thanks for the video, my screen was still going to wobble: tightening the screws made no difference.
I noticed that there was a gap either side of each hinge and dripped some Thai loctite/thread sealant (visbella 6671into them and re-assembled. The screen is like new.
Thanks!
thank you M.r
Nice one! Do you ever use threadlock compound on the screws?
I haven't, no. Probably not a bad idea - quite common to see a little dab on laptops screws, but I haven't paid enough attention to see if loose screws have any on or not, so can't say if it's effective long-term.
Congratulations to the video. My mac screen (Macbook Air early 2014 A1466) is loose and I'm looking for the hinge to replace it, I looked on the internet but I couldn't find it. Do you have a reference from where to buy it?
Love your videos, can I ask what video camera are you using for all the closeup work. Thanks
Logitech BRIO and plenty of light
nice video bro
For the screws that came loose on their own, couldn't you maybe add a dab of blue or purple Loc-Tite to prevent future problems?
offcourse, but he is not a pro so he just leave it to another repairman whos pro
@@danielsatko- I've noticed that you seem to hang around this channel simply to make spiteful, insulting comments on various videos. If that's all you're here to do, you should leave.
@@kdawg3484 no, i just comment quality of work and knowledge
@@danielsatko- I wouldn't add anything! Better screw that is looser than screw you can't remove!

Great Job,,,,,,,,,Saludos......
Great video!
My issue is much worse ... broken hinges. Yes, both of them, on A1466. Any idea how to replace them, since the display wires go trough them? Or the only option is to replace the whole display? Thanks in advance!
I've looked into this. I have an A1466 also. The consensus is that unless you're a repair genius, you'll need to replace the display. The cost is not too bad on eBay and iFixit has a video about the process.
10:10 you know AvE? He describes this as a: "ahhh click"
Where can you buy repair parts (hinges)?
The Red Hard Case cause as well to wobble the Display Assembly because of the weight of that case...
So useful! Do you happen to have a video for a 2017 Macbook Pro with touchbar on how to fix a floppy hinge? I have a 2013 MBA 11" which started to become too old for me to use and was giving me sh** when I would use programs like Adobe Illustrator, Cricut Design Space, and Silhouette Studio because those are rather power hungry programs and my MBA was not able to keep up with the demands. So I bought a refurbished in immaculate condition MBP 2017 with touchbar to conduct my business and also purchased the protection plan (or rather was duped and thought I paid for the all included protection plan and apparently only got the one which covers power failures and surges--why would anyone do that and pay almost as much for it as the one that covers all damages..anyway I got ripped off lesson learned) and when I called in to file a claim only two months later, and of no fault of my own, because my hinge had suddenly let all the way loose and has no hold whatsoever, I discovered that even though it was not my fault (I am very anal about protecting my investment and outfit my devices with all the proper protection and this one was no different--used a leather softshell case from day one and screen/keyboard protectors ntm treated it like a baby) the protection plan company (GRRRR) denied the claim and only after speaking with a manager did they agree to send shipping supplies and fix it when I demanded my money back; Pointing out that they were purposely misleading people into thinking they purchased a full protection plan by failing to disclose all the details at the time of purchase or simply make the full protection plan the first choice option--obviously I had a valid point and wasn't the first person to have encountered this issue and give them hell over it otherwise they'd not agreed to repair it and send the materials to ship it. But, some circumstances have delayed my sending it out due to all the preparations that must be done beforehand, and are just annoying to do like remove all your data, reset machine, back everything up, etc. and most of which takes time to do and get all your ducks in a row with a place to back everything up and all the other crap they require you to do and you should do if you are concerned with privacy and the possibility of some stranger accessing your computer's contents if you decide to be lazy or its too much hassle or believe that theres no chance or reason for them to need to reset your system if working on the hardware-however, you never know in the event they damage it and have to pay for the replacement or have to replace it with a new one, if the data and contents were not backed up before sending out, all is lost... anyhow... so my husband is an iphone and ipad repair technician and I would love to not have to send this mac out if he can tackle the job--and I like the way you explain and are thorough, as well as make sure to disclose important vital info such as placement of screws and mapping out which screws belong where when reassembling as that is a huge part of the repair process on these types of devices especially Apple. Not all the screws are the same size nor take the same type of screwdriver in some instances. Would love to see if there is one a video for MBP 2017 with touchbar (as mentioned earlier) for this issue... I don't recall the model number right this moment but think it is A1708. Thanks
Shouldn't you be placing some thread locker like locktite blue to stop them from coming loose again?
I'm surprised you didn't clean that sticky piece off while you were able before putting it back on and sewing everything back up.
Prob the computer is done but somebody has an expensive Mac book pro computer and they didn’t take care of it by holding it with the screen dangling. The hinges got loose and they needed something behind to to keep it stable. One day, their screen started glitching as heck and would only keep stable if it were exactly 90 degrees. Is this fixable to bring to a tech place??? Please respond
Loctite on screws would be even better but good job none the same
Can you help me pls, I have gtx 960 4gb, it works but after 2 hours of using it won’t work I become no signal anymore, please help me out
which camera are you used for recording videos?
Logitech BRIO with studio lighting. I've got a video about my setup coming up, since I've had a lot of questions about it!
i have a macbook pro 15 inch retina 2015 and my screen wobbled too.. it didn´t bothered me at first but it became worst. so i repaired it myself and now it´s perfect again. but if it wobbles a little bit i don´t mind at all. NO laptop screen is perfectly frozen, it just moves.
I tried to follow the guide. I got to disconnect the wireless antennas, and one of them broke off. I pulled it of just like in the video, by taking it of while holding the cable. Any way to fix it? I am kind of sad, since i just bought the mac :(
I followed the instructions and fixed my hinge. But now my fan is constantly running, battery not charging and it's laggy. Any idea what I might have done wrong and how to fix it.
Is the fan operating normally, but is particularly noisy now? I found that the rubber piece that goes over the fan was compressing on the fan mechanism causing a loud noice and intermittent stops and starts. I used a small screwdriver to pull the aluminum (?) fan case back out and it went back to operating silently. As for the battery, did you seat the band that goes over the fan? I made that mistake on my first attempt putting everything back together.
Hi, everything went perfect, until I tried to connect the wifi antenna. (very last step!!) I was very carefull while you tell a would have a bad day. And I did have had already some challenges with wifi antenna on Iphones but succeed always. This time, the connector still doesn't get in. It's not flat, but anyway, I'm not able to get it in. And now? I've seen some cutting the wire and put anoter one with soldure. would that be ok?
Actually, it seems like a part of the support on the wifi/buetooth card itself went out and is still attached to the antenna! I succed to push it back, but If I slightly touch the wire, it drops out. So I pushed it on place and stopped breathing :) I screwed the bottom, and wifi and bluetooth signal is good. We'll see on the long run, but I'm not confident.
nice sr
Sees the "MBA Floppy Screen" in the thumbnail and clicks wondering how a floppy drive made it into a MBA. Finds out we're talking about a wobbly screen. laughs.
My 2017 MacBook Air has the same problem and the screen itself got messed up because of this. Would i be able to replace the screen and fix both problems?
Yea you can replace the screen - so long as the replacement is in better condition, of course.
So many occasions for a bad day...
is it 100 percent security? I mean there is no risk of damaging the mac
