The problem with taxing purchases is that it fucks the economy because people are less inclined to spend money. The reason America has such a strong economy is because it's incentivized to invest your money rather than save it and lose value to inflation.

Accountant here the reason it is so difficult to get rich people is because the tax law is so complicated and confusing that there are loopholes everywhere.

It's not called a sales tax, it's called a consumption tax and this is a great way to change the regressive fiscal system that exists today into a more progressive system that directly aligns the tax burden in tandem with levels of wealth. I'm glad you guys even mentioned this

That's not how tax brackets work tho, it's only the money you're making above $400k that's taxed that way.
Meaning that guy making $150k won't suddenly see his savings disappear once he starts making more than $400k

Taxing net worth = taxing unrealized gains. That still fucks the middle class. By this logic you could tax someone who owns a home as it appreciates in value but doesn't sell it... same with brokerage accounts or any asset that increases in value but haven't sold for cash.
I doubt anyone with a middle class net worth (less than 5mil) would see this tax.
To play devil's advocate on a wealth tax, it is an effective way to reduce resource parking. We're all going to die someday so everything we "own" we're technically renting from the universe. If a few people come along and claim ownership of all the resources and don't really do anything with them, when other people could make those same resources very productive, it's a disservice to life on this planet in general and for that reason maybe this behavior should be taxed.

Andrew yang was big on the value added tax instead of a wealth tax. His argument basically came down to European nations like german enacting wealth taxes, realizing they didn’t work, and switched to VAT. Yang wanted to skip the process and just do VAT.

Hm yeah, but the tie to inflation to me seems spurious. I see how it would happen in theory, but you dont see that occur in other major countries that have a VAT, so it kinda pokes a big hole in it, of that theory ever held water at all.
Vat is tricking, governments want people to spend money. The moment you start taxing on spend people will cut their spending. growth of economies is based primarily on spending.
Not an economist here, but I've always been a bit perplexed by people talking about "inflation" in a general sense. Like, you can have a situation where housing prices go down while the cost of food goes up, which I imagine will probably happen if you tax the people buying houses and use the money on UBI or benefits. But maybe I'm wrong.
VAT is the way to go- but it is important that there is a higher tax on luxury goods than basic ones.
I understand the argument for a wealth tax but that opens up a can of worms as well- it basically makes your house or car property of the government and double taxes them. I'd rather do a robot tax and tax the hell out of Amazon for all the bots that they hire to replace people's jobs

What I really like about Andrew and Akaash is that for comedians, they know what's up and can think outside the box. They can see the nuances in many situations and will call out anyone on their hypocrisy. Mark sometimes can, but Alex is just too far to the left to even notice them. At least this brings a nice perspective that shows that even though not all of them may agree on everything, they are still friends and can have candid conversations on pretty much any topic. Too bad that only comedians are able to do this.
Schulz is right a sales tax is a better way to mitigate tax avoidance good thing we already have that for literally every purchase (except for groceries in some states)
@10:30 ... that is not how taxes work. They are taxing that years income; you don't retroactively pay more taxes because you are in a higher tax bracket this year.

It’s really easy to solve this issue. It’s called decrease government size. Taxes was originally a government tool used to not only pay for social programs like medicare or military, but it was suppose to promote growth in areas of US GDP. Example, u get tax credit if u create a clean energy business or renovating old historic homes. When people understand that, everyone should take advantage of tax incentives.

It's called VAT (Value Added Tax), in some countries, all or most purchasable items have a 14% mark up price added to products as tax... But these countries have this and then salary and income tax on top of that so it's double penetration for the non rich
What you guys don't realize is the way these tax brackets work. Imagine it's a 10% tax for anyone under $400,000 a year, that means $40,000 gets taken. If it's $400,001 a year, you don't all of a sudden get $200,000.50 taken away with a 50% tax, that 50% or whatever bracket kicks in only for the amount made over that initial $400,000. So the 50% tax of that $400,001 would be $40,000.50.

Why not flat percentage tax with no loopholes and than there is little need for the irs to begin with...
giant sales tax will just lead to them buying stuff from places that wont place a high sales tax we have already seen this with companies like home depo moving the business a couple miles to a new jurisdiction that didn't levy higher sales taxes cause they where losing business overall since the price with the tax was more than what the people wanted to spend
