Taking a Look at the Ed, Edd, n Eddy Handheld Video Game Trilogy!

  • That's right! In this video I cover not one, not two, but THREE different Ed Edd n Eddy video games: Jawbreakers (GBA), The Mis-Edventures (GBA), and Scam of the Century (NDS). Hope you guys are as excited for this video as I am! EEnE has always been a show I've wanted to talk about on my channel, and now thankfully I can do just that! As I mentioned at the start of the video, the console version of the Mis-Edventures will be getting its own video, so stay tuned for that coming soon!
    Also, as a side note I am going to be covering all video games in a franchise going forward, meaning that instead of jumping around to different shows like I did with my first few videos, I will now be covering one franchise at a time on my channel in order to maintain more consistency (with the exceptions being Spongebob and Powerpuff Girls). This means that the next video after this one WILL be the Mis-Edventures (console version), and then the videos following that will all be about another show, then so on and so forth.

      Makes me feel more grateful that my mom would literally watch Ed Edd n Eddy and the other cartoons with me as a kid. I feel she did something right with giving me enough restrictions without going overboard. At least, Ed Edd n Eddy literally got me into video editing interestingly enough.

      Weird... My dad's one complaint about it was that, because it was a cartoon in English, and we aren't native English speakers, that it was pointless for me to watch it since I couldn't understand what they were saying, as I was too young and my understanding of spoken English was still too basic... to which I replied that, by seeing their actions, and grasping at the few words I did understand, I could very much understand at least the basic plot of the episodes, and especially the characters' personalities!

      I imagine it's one of the few shows where the term "PG" really does apply. It's a great, harmless show for the most part, but it sort of relies on a kid being well raised enough to understand not to copy what they're seeing.

    The issue with making a show like Ed Edd n Eddy a video game is that in a majority of the episodes, the Eds fail at their schemes. This is definitely fine for an 11 minute episode of a cartoon, but trying to translate that formula into a video game where you're supposed to be playing as them and invested in trying to succeed can make that ending feel like you wasted your time, especially when they throw in frustratingly sluggish controls that inflate the difficulty more than it actually is.

      Yeah... Like, there was one or two times the ending actually felt like a win for the Eds, and of course there's the movie (which wouldn't have been a bad setting for a game, not gonna lie), but other than that, yeah.

    • @SpookyDollhouse
      @SpookyDollhouse Год назад +1

      It's a fun subversion that fits the cartoon though. You "winning" is getting to see them fail. That's right on the money, and it's fun too. "The Eds don't win that's disappointing" lol

    Great Vid, played mis-edventure on Gameboy and Gamecube, good times. My father took me to their animation studio in 2007. I met the animation crew and Danny Antonucci; super awesome and passionate people. All signed a CN Invaded poster that I still have today. They were working on the few episodes that was season 6 and the movie. A DS with Scam of the Century was there, they let me try it out. I have a vivid memory of the pink dolls, and for the longest time I couldn't remember what the game was called (thank you). When it was time to go, Danny gave me a real jawbreaker! I will never forget that experience.

    I mostly agree, but the same goes for level design. You can have the greatest controlling game ever, but that can only get an experience so far if the level design doesn't push them to their full potential and meaningfully challenge the player. Games like Super Mario Sunshine and Spyro 2 are particularly guilty examples of this.

    I know my little cousin couldn't watch too much of Ed Edd n Eddy because it was more "mean-spirited" in tone when it came to how the kids related to each other. Eddy would tell Ed to "shut up" a lot or call him an "idiot", with Kevin constantly calling the Eds "dorks". Sarah was always screaming, there was constant violence with characters hitting each other and beating each other up, etc. Fun show, but you didn't want a little kid to imitate that.

    I also had the same experience regarding Ed Edd and Eddy with my parents as well as a friend with theirs. It was always strange to me because it was the only cartoon they were adamant about me not watching, I always figured that maybe it just gave off the impression of being a vulgar adult cartoon due to the art style or something.

    What's interesting about EEnE Jawbreakers is there are screenshots available online, which don't match the final game. Those screenshots were taken from the beta version, which might suggest that the game was meant to be completely different. For example, it seems only Eddy was playable at that point, being able to go anywhere in the map, including going into houses instead of being in linear pattern from point A to point B. The levels there seem the same with exception that all the Cul-de-Sac kids (Including Ed, Double D and Kankers) were there as part of the background or maybe as NPCs, which Eddy could talk to them. One screenshot even shows Eds fighting Lee Kanker by using a Newspaper Shooter.

    • @Takimeko
      @Takimeko 3 года назад +1

      There's also a screenshot on the back of the game's box that shows a level that never made it into the final game.

Aside from the Ed Edd n Eddy game, there was a Shrek game, a Nicktoons Unite hand-held tie-in game, a Precure game, probably more I'm forgetting. I have to wonder what it was about that specific play-style that was mimicked so much on the GBA.

    Ed Edd n Eddy jawbreakers is actually on the finished. If you really pay attention there are certain things that hint at this and although I did get a chance to ask to people that work on the game and what was wrong, they were only able to give me short answers because they didn't know everything about it. One of the things that hints at this is the fact that if you put in the infinite in Jetpack code, all three characters have an animation for using the jetpack. The jetpack was originally intended to be a temporary power up. The only other thing that they were able to tell me is that the original concept well the game was not that much different but also the game was originally intended to be a little bit longer and have a slightly different storyline. I really don't remember what else I was told because this was years ago and I happened to meet them by chance. I had roughly 10 minutes to talk to them at most

    Out of all the three games that were mentioned, I never did owned Mis-Edventure, so I can tell that I likely missed out on the better Ed Edd n Eddy games.
    Jawbreakers will always be a guilty pleasure of mine because I have beat it numerous of times. I even went as far beating it while collecting all coins and extra lives. I can almost beat it without losing a life once (which equates to quiting to the title screen for each time I died), but the Kevin boss fight at that time always gave me trouble. I'll not lie though, I thought there was a different ending if one were to play the game as that where the eds DID get their jawbreakers.
    I will agree with what criticism this game has, mostly with the hit boxes and how playing as Ed or Double D cannot jump over an enemy without the need of an extra platform.
    Another criticism I do want to add is that when you brought up the timer at 10:13, you forgot to mention that the game has a Hard Mode difficulty, which gives you less time than before. While some stages are doable in Hard Mode, the fourth Junkyard stage (the one with the falling gears room with an infamously placed robot enemy) is impossible to complete since it gives you 115 ticks, and I say ticks because the timer does not count down at regular seconds.
    Again, Jawbreakers will always be a guilty pleasure of mine, but had it got more development and better QA testing, those issues wouldn't have been presented.

    The evil robot emperor Zodd. Ed wants to vanquish Zodd, Double D wants to save the kids of the Cúl de sac While Eddy is more concerned about not having the kids around to scam so he Joins up and get the kids back. It was a pretty fun idea and allot more original then the games CN put out. I think I still have the plans at school. Or again I could of destroyed them trying to do a voodoo curse to kill my bullies.

    Jawbreakers was a fun enough game when i was young. I think my major issue was an issue i have with so many other platformers.
    No health bar and 1 hit deaths.
    I dont know why people enjoy games with no margin for error.
    It was also disappointing that the jumping was atrocious.
    I get that Eddy was the one with a double jump, but Double Dee and Ed still needed to jump to platforms to progress and it was just frustrating that They couldn't jump more than a foot off the ground.

    Damn, using an emulator really shows the weird disparity of the character models in Scam of the Century... I mean, it's not bad, just weird.
    Also, I honestly had more fun with the meat minigame than the main game. The levels were tough, and in a cheap way as I now realize, the Game Over screen was my one constant for that game, and Rolf's tractor was one of the worst things that game came up with, but it was quite satisfying to finally pummel Jonny's melon. Plus, it was one of my first games, so it still has a neat place in my heart.
    I played the other two games a couple years later on an emulator. Jawbreakers, didn't even get past the first stage without getting annoyed, so I just dropped it. Mis-Ed-ventures, on the other hand, was really fun!

    Mis-Ed-Ventures on GBA was among my earliest handheld games alongside Flight of the Falcon and Cartoon Network Speedway and it ended up being the only way I got to play the game since my parents never got me the console version. I loved it all the same tho, I almost beat the whole thing 100% actually, I'm just missing one jawbreaker that I can't seem to find in any of the levels.

    Edit: As a side note as far as the swear goes, there's one part in I think the rule-breaking episode where Double D says "WHAT IN SAM HILL ARE YOU DOING?!!" As a kid I was convinced for a while that Double D was saying "What the damn hell" instead.

    Yeah for the jawbreakers game I felt Ed should be the fastest like a juggernaut either with a running dash or you build up in place like sonic spin dash. I can't remember if you can ko enemies but I feel they should have had more focus on that with Eddy being the one that can't fight. In the show the other kids would often get in the way of the ed's so them fighting makes sense. Or at least have the kanker sisters
