    They had an incredible live sound back then. Super crunchy guitar and distorted bass. HUGE. Much better before the Eliminator years.

      I love the distorted bass, I'm sucker for some bass and the way Dusty played it was amazing and his work in ten foot pole hooked me to them when is was a kid in the 90s

      I'm probably older than most here, anyway.. I got to see these guys all the place
      . way back... If you were looking around..
      You could see people, running sound EQUIPMENT.. Tripping off old
      EchoPLEX BOXES.. (look it up.)..
      Pre-recorded Stuff..
      Either way the digital day's came along..
      And in bigger places, echoing throughout the building, or stadium..
      has been a problem..
      Like a ball game.. Some places you get, or sit.. It's kinda hard to make out what the HELL was just SAID..
      THESE folks are the best in the music business.. Hands down..
      And still putting out great music,
      Dusty is missed, that bass in ALOT of cases was triggering off the midi..
      ..... = music instrument, digital interface.. = not so many people needed to do that work... The guitar tech/ now bass player could tell some stories, I'm SURE..
      God bless you all, in the name of Jesus...

    Several comments on this post demonstrate the unfortunate negative "effect" RECENT technology has on listener & viewer impressions of live music. Billy's been a generous influence on my work since the late 70's, especially in regards to tone, production, keeping it simple and in the groove. Yes, at some live shows he'll occasionally use limited backing guitar and special effect tracks - however, never any "auto-tune," lip syncing or relying on vocal dubs - especially at this show. Any delay seen in close ups of his singing is only from the video mix - this is a pure live 3 piece golden chunk of Rock history. Billy always has - and continues to REALLY SING IT. Don't confuse these guys with techno reliant performers of today - they won't need any crutches until their hips are being replaced from all the dance grooves.

    • @lennycarey7042
      @lennycarey7042 4 года назад

      Sounds like there's vocal dubs in it too me. And i dunno why they just didn't put another guitarist out there instead of using a backing track. Kinda lame, but that's my opinion. Still sounds good though

      I notice he has a dual tonality to his voice, how is that being done? You can clearly tell when dusty sings however he when he’s not there are two voices coming out of Billy?

    • @JeffHayfordMusic
      @JeffHayfordMusic 3 года назад +3

      @@gtate135 I'm quite sure your hearing his brilliant mix with the analog effects available at the time. It's a combination of Chorus, Phase, Delay, Reverb and Compression, he's dialed them into a blend that does sound a bit like todays "Doubling" effect. By the 90's people in the know, knew Billy was a tone genius. When the earliest commercially released digital effects processor by Sony, "SP90" I believe it was called, they turned to Billy for help. During its development they sent them to him, he worked wonders with it and to make it understandable asked him (hired I'm sure) to write the entire last chapter of the owner's manual - soon everyone wanted one. I sold 2 guitars to get the $1,600 needed to buy one. It was extremely powerful especially for the time, however also extremely difficult to use and especially create your own effects, the 'lil 'ol boy from Texas further proved his brilliance with instruction on how to get the most out of one. It quickly became an industry standard, and was so for several years when digital wonders were coming out like wildfire and in every studio worth its salt.

    Billy was born there,Dusty is originally from Dallas,Frank was born in Frankston,Texas on the Anderson/Henderson county line.
    My moms people setting in Henderson County in1846.
    Now the first time I saw these dudes was Dec.27th,1981 @ the Wintergarden in Dallas.
    And no l didn't go from Houston to Dallas to see The Fabulous ZZTop. I lived in Steve Miller's hometown.
    Without googling, can anyone honestly tell me what town he is from?

      Without googling I'm gonna say Steve Miller is from Dallas.
      My first ZZTop show was El Loco tour Nov. 1st, 1981 at the Cotton Bowl with the Rolling Stones. Man it was a perfect day for a show at the Cotton Bowl, Texas in the Fall when it starts to cool off a little bit, you know what I'm talkin bout.
      Paid $17.50 for the ticket. I still got the stub.
      I'm a Fort Worth boy, but I was born up north in Amarillo.

    For myself and many, many other guitar player's "Deguello" will forever be known as the "Album Of Tone!" If you can't groove to these Dudes, you just can't groove. Only thing is I like it better when they lost the Cowboy Hats...

      They ARE from Texas - my homies ! - and bet they'd wear their hats whether a punk likes it or not...... they look superfly with and without their cowboy hats !

      You must not be from Tejas. It's an original. You should have seen them before they grew the beards. Get the Fandango album. It's partially live in Austin at the First Annual Barbecue and Barn Dance. I was there and they were sporting their Stetsons and white Texas Ruby studded jackets.

    Dusty really works that bass! Is that Frank singing or Billy being enhanced via electronics?

    Rush, Hendrix, Grand Funk, ZZ, and Triumph. All amazing 3 man bands. Am I missing any, cause I would love to know. BTW Zep is my favorite, but 3 man rock bands are so awesome.

      Never mind, I googled it and seen I missed plenty. Although the 5 I have listed above to me would be the top 5. I seen Stevie Ray 2 months before he died, and I am sure he had at least 5 band members on the stage, including a keyboardist?

      Cream and ELP would be the two I missed that could be argued to be in top 5.
