So they are diluted a bit more than 9% and the stock went up 30%... If this billion counts in earnings that means the quarter loss will look much better, maybe even approach zero which might fool many but really changes nothing. The simple truth is that it must be very possible to turn the company around. Vertical integration for instance so the effing headlights don't cost 1000$ each. It's packaging plastic and a couple of LEDs, the margin must be crazy. But so far zero indication that they understand cost.
Zonal auto networks are not rocket science. Speaks to VW's insecurity in this technology that they felt a need to obtain it. Yet another nail in Cariad adventure. Biggest problem with this kind of investment is that it revalues Rivian at this new level. Not unusual in the current climate for startups. Odd for an already public. Bought themselves a year or so.
VW/Porsche can't get software from Rimac? Rimac>Rivian, founder still holds significant equity and control, actual engineering and manufacturing prowess, successful partnerships with other mfgs

I think this makes sense for rivian. 5-10% dilution is definitely worth it if they can stabilize their business and maybe even get access to additional VW resources. Certainly not a deal done from a position of strength, but also not a stupid deal either, imho.
Forgotten is the access to the largest car maker on the planet regarding cost savings/manufacturing efficiencies, global presence, source for certain parts and potential sharing of platforms if not sales, etc.. Rivian also remains in control of the company (important) while alleviating some financial strains on the company to focus on developing better products for less money. This is good management.

Per the press release, "Initially VW will invest $1 billion in Rivian through an unsecured convertible note that will convert into Rivian’s common stock subject to certain conditions upon the later of receipt of regulatory approvals and December 1, 2024. VW is expected to invest a further $4B as part of the transaction" With Rivian losing almost $2 bill/qtr, I don't see how this deal even slows down Rivian's certain path to bankruptcy
