One artist being more successful than another is often random or simply determined by the team behind them; the management, promoters, songwriters etc. Some of the best singers on earth never get a record deal or become famous and some very mediocre artists get the number one spot, whether that's due to luck or because they have been produced to fit exactly into what society wants. An example of a singer that's probably better than both Selena and Demi, but at least Selena, is JoJo. She was very famous but then was held back by her management. Now that she's started doing what she loves and working for herself she's way less famous than she used to be. That's not embarrassing, that's life.
