My understanding was the traditional method is to use the knockdown first, then a placement, tack-down, trim fabric, and final satin stitch. Knockdown is designed to flatten garment to avoid puckering.

Hi! The sequence is: placement stitch
Tackdown
Satin stitch.
Knockdown stitch is not used in appliqué designs. It is used if we are working with a plush fabric, like a towel fabric or fur.
