RR Crossing Gates Hit Car & Boat, Railroad Switching Short Line Railroad Cincinnati Eastern Railroad

  • Car gets hit hard by a railroad crossing gate while a train was doing some railroad switching. Then a boat breaks off the RR crossing arm. This is my first time to film both new locomotives working together. I caught 1657 on its first a month ago. Cincinnati Eastern Railroad recently got both these GP15-1 units. Today they were working together to switch 4 track Afton Yard near Batavia, Ohio. I filmed the whole thing. If its boring just skip to 12:25 to see the car get hit by the gate. The Boat took the gate out at. A crew quickly arrived to repair the gate while the crew was out of sight switching. This video also shows the new customer construction. Purina is building a HUGE dog food processing plant that will reportedly give 6 car loads a day to CCET. This is going to be a major customer and CCET is really going to be busy. They have already added a score of customers to this line that Norfolk Southern gave up on. This video also shows my dogs playing and has a slide show at the end. Since I filmed this in 4K this long video took 22 hours to download. Filmed September 2, 2021. Thanks for watching!

      The gate was not destroyed. They put it back where it belonged. They are designed to breakaway and easily be reinstalled. What does destroy them is when they break away and end up laying across the tracks. I have run over many of them and they usually end up in 3 pieces.

    Wow, that was epic!! Can't help thinking that the crossing controls are set much too fine. You can see drivers hesitate as the barriers bounce up and down so quickly. Thought the train man did a brilliant job on such a busy crossing!!

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 2 года назад +1

      they were clearly doing yard/siding switching, probably too many complaints about being blocked for long periods, so they made it close closer to the crossing. then along come covid19 and longer trains than usual, causing overlength switching jobs to trigger the gates again.
      everyone wants their junk products delivered timely, yet nobody wants to wait for the product to be moved or be the workers moving it! how's the lack of products working out? lol.

    Hello from the UK. AS I have said before, this is where the real activity takes place on the railways, not just watching trains speed by on the main lines. For non-rail fan motorists, I feel their frustration at waiting, seeing a train go over the crossing and then the barriers lift and drop down again. It must feel like the crossing is deliberately taunting them!

      There a few locomotives on CCET that fit the description of "grungy blue diesel" but none of them are in this video. Are you saying that you've found out it's been repainted in some other way?
      The locomotives in this video are a pair of EMD GP15-1s, numbers 1657 and 1686, which the railroad has acquired in the last couple of months. They've been in this rather fine black and red paint scheme for as long as CCET has had them.
      The grungy blue diesel could be either one of the two GE B36-7s that the railroad has (numbers 5758 and 5795, from memory) or the GP49 that they used to have, which was painted in blue and yellow Alaska Railroad colours but with the word "Alaska" painted over. That was either number 2806 or 2807 -- I forget which was which; the other one was also repainted into a handsome black livery. They sold the GP49s a year or two ago.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 года назад +5

      The problem is that they're triggered by proximity detectors on the track. There are two types of detector: some just detect the presence of a train close to the crossing; others measure how fast the train is moving. Both of these have problems with switching manoeuvres. With the first kind of detector, if the train moves slightly too far from the crossing, the detector says, "OK -- the train's gone" and lifts the gates. With the second kind, if the train stops for too long, the detector says "OK -- the train's still close to the crossing but it's not on it and it's stopped" and opens the gates. It may be that the detectors need to be adjusted.

    • @joeblow5154

      Those gates are a mess. Train workers calling the drivers a "dumbass" when the bells ring for a second then the arm comes down real fast and hits a trailered boat that was already committed to crossing the tracks.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 года назад +1

      @@joeblow5154 The gates are certainly a mess. However, the bells had been ringing for fully six seconds at the point when the gate struck the boat. It's unclear how long the lights had been flashing before the bells started.

    • @joeblow5154
      @joeblow5154 2 года назад +3

      @@beeble2003 It looked about 3 seconds before the arm came down fully @ 6 seconds. That ain't much time if your pulling a heavy trailer behind. I'm just saying they need to give it few seconds longer for traffic to react. Not everyone has lightning quick reflexes to make a decision and carry it out.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 года назад +5

      @@joeblow5154 I suppose I cheated a bit by counting time from the bell to the strike rather than the bell to the gate moving. But, hey, three seconds is better than nothing, right? At 20:55, you see that, simultaneously, the lights start flashing, the bell start sounding and the gates come down. At least that time, the crossing was manned so no traffic was moving. They definitely need to get the crossing fixed.

    And you saying "Those gates are actually pretty heavy" reminded me of a childhood memory from when I was staying with one of my Aunts for a while as a 5-year old, and the railroad was right outside her window, maybe 50 metres away (whatever that may be in feet?!), with crossing gates in a bit of a distance; And on one night I saw the gates going down just as a pedestrian was entering that crossing, and he got hit on the head by them, but strangely he just kept walking as if nothing even happened, and the gate stayed up in the position where it had hit him! 😳 This was in Germany in the mid 70's, by the way; I moved to NZ 25 years later 🙂 A couple more memories of that particular railroad: A steam train rolling by one snowy day in Winter and many of the passengers waving at me, and also: Passing aforementioned crossing just after a freight train had gone past and seeing its red tail ligh fall off onto the tracks 😀

    That large building at the Purina plant appears to be one of those automated warehouses with the really high pallet racking. Could be a lot of good business for CEE, covered hoppers of grains and cereals in, frozen/fridge cars of meats in and boxcars filled with pallets of products outbound. CEE is going to be busy! Could have a lot of potential as a modelling project.

      The different location for the exhaust stacks was probably an engineering chance to make something better. The two locomotives may have different dash numbers, ie GP15-1 and GP15-2.

    Great scenery - great weather for seeing trains - the brakeman got a close up view of the crossing gate arm being damaged by the boat trailer, so he must have called it in to get that repair done so fast. They must have repair crews on standby to respond to things - all in a days work.

    It seems most of the Cincinnati locos are constantly bleeding air. I don't notice it much on other clips but it is constant here. Cool video though. Thanks for posting JT.

    You definitely did not bore *me* with this video; Locos are my favourite part about trains 😀 Still nice and clean, these two! 😀 NZ's diesel locos usually are terribly grubby, but one particular shunter had gotten a 'surprise wash' very recently after it was remote-controlled straight into Picton Harbour, together with two freight wagons 😄 PS: I feel sorry for some of those drivers having to wait at the gates forever while the train is just moving back and forth a bit 😬

    I find switching operations to be amusing. The most memorable switching operations from childhood would have been in the mid-1970's with Seaboard Coast Line R.R. Across the tracks behind the house, was the Anheuser Busch distribution warehouse. SCL swapped out several boxcars and rearranged a few more. A second memorable event was Fowler Ave in Fort Myers shutting down while they were train building in the Fort Myers rail yard.

    Not surprised that a car got hit by that gate ! That is crazy! They need to fix it with a better signal length. Bet it drives cars crazy!

    I must be a real Railfan because I watched the entire video and enjoyed it! I never tire of trains. And I thought the gate arms were designed to disconnect easily from the post in event of a collision. Or not. Lol. Idk.

    You'll never know what you are going to catch on video. Crossing gate hitting on top on that white car and after zooming in on the loco & panning to the right toward the crossing. Contact! Just on the right side of the video, boat snap the gate. We all saw that the gate was going to hit the boat anyway. Keep up the good work Jaw Tooth. Big time.

    You got it on video !! The camper almost got it too going the other way !! People are breaking the law by proceeding while the lights are still flashing !! You should have got the truck license and sent it to the railroad so he can pay for the reattachment of the arm !! The Guy picked it up and set it aside !!! I heard it on your radio Jawtooth!! Keep up the interesting videos Yes I'm a diehard railfan !!!
