  • If you need to drill holes in a drywall ceiling, you could just go ahead and do it, let the dust fall where it does, and then clean it up later, but there’s a better way.

O.K. I know this video is a little old, but after cutting one hole in the ceiling to install recessed lighting in the kitchen, and getting a lot of plaster dust everywhere, I needed a solution. Found this idea that Peter Desmond had and finehomebuilding demonstrated. Went and purchased the cheapest basketball I could find. Paid under 5 bucks for one. Cut it with a utility knife, drilled the 1/2 inch hole and went to work. It is very easy to center your hole saw exactly where you want it. The half basketball is very flexible. Let me say, this idea works friggon great. I drilled/cut 6 more recessed light holes with barely a trace of dust. Picked up the remaining dust with a single Swiffer pad and you could never even tell I was there. Thanks for the great tip and demonstration.

I can see the conversation already. Your son asks you, "Dad where's the basketball?" and you say, " Gee, son I don't know. You need to be more responsible with your things."

I think a microwave food cover would also work

Absolutely. I was thinking almost the same thing. A cheap clear dollar store Tupperware container. Who the hell has a basketball hanging around. Not to mention destroying it.

another advantage is that a microwave food cover is CLEAR plastic and SEE-THROUGH :) great tip!

Are those flexible like basketball rubber? You need to be able to advance your hole saw bit so you need that give in the material .

Try to center that bit accurately with the basketball in your way. Good luck!

He showed how to center it accurately, he pulled the side of it down out of his way so he could see to center the hole then let it spring back up to the ceiling.

It is not hard at all. The half basketball is very flexible. Once the center drill bit is lined up, start your drill and just keep it straight and plumb. Incredibility easy and just works. No luck needed.
