I think it's time that the actual courtyard and the area immediately in front of Horse Guards is made clear of all tourists and only small, supervised groups are permitted inside during proscribed hours. It really is an indignity for professional soldiers to be subjected to this constant harassment by members of the public. At the very least "guardians" - like at Windsor Castle should be around to make sure that visitors keep their distance and treat the Sentries with proper respect. At the moment it just looks like a "circus".
I've wondered why they don't do that. It's sad that the guards have to tolerate this, and it's harder for them to pinpoint threats, because of the gaggle of people all around them like this.

Why do you think they are dressed in their 19th century ceremonial dress rather than the usual fatigues? Because it is MEANT for the tourists and visitors! There is nothing for them to guard at this location, other than The Horseguards museum. Their barracks is miles away, other than a place behind two wooden gates here, only used as a resting place for this duty. Any soldier is properly briefed about people wanting pics taken next to a man or woman wearing this garb, and not to be too aggressive about it. They are serving soldiers, not easily offended kids.

the guard behaved really professionally, a simple stumping warned those two to stay clear from the, and allowed all the tourist to take pictures with him.
When i used to do st james palace years ago ,sometimes when a tourist used to come and stand beside me for a picture,i used ti stand to attention shoulder arms and commence marching,well it helped dass the time,a couple of tmes sometimes you could get talking to a young lady while standing at st james and this was before mobile phones i used to arrange to meet them at punch and judys covent garden ,i used to say bring a friend and ill bring a mate,this was very early eighties.Also when i was a corporal at tower of london at the entrance ,we used have a little room where we used to sit in daytime cant remember too much of what i was supposed to do even then but i had a nice american girlfriend studying in london ,came to visit me when on duty.There also used to be a little booth just outside great for popping out in tunic and forage cap for a packet of cigarettes.Needless to say within a year of me reeiving my corporal stripes they were taken off me,but i can honestly say that posting in london chelsea barracks was a brilliant postingearly eighties kings road fantastic

Honestly, I don't think it he got angry at all, and was polite to let them finish their selfie since they took it and put their phone away before he left, otherwise he wouldn't have left his post but instead just given the order "stand back". I think he just moved to a different area for a different reason and simply waited for the guys to take their picture. They weren't disrespectful at all, and it's a usual expectation that visitors will take photos with them as long as they aren't being disruptive. Being military myself, I don't find being disrespected or treated as an object for someone wanting to take a picture with me. Those with the loudest complaints most likely never served a day in any Armed Forces. I’ve been watching these videos for a couple of months now and I have a few questions. The swords/sabres are ceremonial in there polish but… Are they manufactured to be utilitarian in battle? Are they sharpened? Do they train in the use of these weapons in a real fight? (No disrespect is intended, their duty is to guard so I suspect they are real weapons. I’m just curious about their utility.)

I have never seen a tourist, not one, ask permisssion or say thank you. Military personnel, in any form of uniform, are not models posing for the public benefit. They are on duty.

I could never put up with what these Guards go through and so many idiots sho little or no respect.
There needs to be a specific area identified for tourists to walk in and not all over the place like this. It’s hard enough that these soldiers have to guard out there in their uniforms which I think is warm too without having to run over tourists when they march to change their positions.

I’ve been watching these videos for a couple of months now and I have a few questions. The swords/sabres are ceremonial in there polish but…
Are they manufactured to be utilitarian in battle?
Are they sharpened?
Do they train in the use of these weapons in a real fight? (No disrespect is intended, their duty is to guard so I suspect they are real weapons. I’m just curious about their utility.)
