    In high school, I remember waiting months for their debut. It was finally released and I drove my parent’s Dodge Dynasty to the mall to buy the cassette. Got in the car, unwrapped the tape, and I see “In memory of Andrew Wood” as I opened the cassette to listen. I was devastated. Couldn’t believe it. Music was never the same.

      Yes it was. That was the awkward teenage years of good music.if he hadn't died we never would have had Pearl Jam hit the big time, which catapulted guitar music back into the limelight.
      The we had Stone Temple Pilots, which I think was the best band of the era, who SUPPOSEDLY copied Pearl Jam's sound (according to David Spade on SNL). Soundgarden didn't REALLY take off without the accessibility of Pearl Jam's "Ten."
      Andrew Wood's death was kind of the catalyst that sparked the revival of guitar music.
      And yes, I was alive then, and knew of Mother Love Bone. He was charismatic, yes, but just not what we needed at that time anyway. I don't think he was a "good" singer, but he did have a stage presence.

    • @thewhiteelephant
      @thewhiteelephant 2 года назад +10

      @@Stahlgewitter I disagree completely. Pearl Jam certainly did not “bring back guitar music.” Andrew Wood’s death was not “the catalyst that sparked the revival of guitar music,” either. Far from it. The only PJ member who liked the solo was McCready, and the first PJ album was really the only one with some soloing. Not sure where you are getting your info, but it goes completely against what actually happened at the time. Guitar music, and the guitar solo, specifically, for that matter, was actually frowned upon by the newer “grunge” scene. How many guitar solos did STP have in their songs? Soundgarden was already firing on all cylinders long before grunge came along, you maybe just didn’t know of them. MLB was actually considered somewhat of a crossover/bridge between glam metal/rock and the newer Seattle/grunge scene. Plus, that scene had already been going on for sometime, just not popular. And the “awkward teenage years of good music”? The metal/rock scene had tons of great bands-actual guitar music bands. The guitar was the main focus of the music. For all intents and purposes, the new era took its focus AWAY from the guitar and focused more on songwriting. And they virtually all talked about that ad nauseam. A few bands carried the torch, though-Candlebox was one of the more significant ones. And all the popular 90s grunge bands would disagree with you on your take of Andrew Wood. He had a ton of influence on many of these bands. Knowing “of” MLB is nothing like actually knowing their music, history, and influences. ✌️

    I saw this band open for Dogs D’amour. There were maybe 50 people in attendance and no one cared. No cheering - no applause. It was sad to witness a young band play their hearts out and get zero crowd reaction. I thought these guys were great so I bought the ep the next day.

      Saw them on that tour as well at the Thirsty Whale in Chicago's North suburbs...same thing...maybe 50 people in attendance. No one cared at all. I definitely remember being impressed by MLB. I talked to all of them after the show. Dogs D'amour were the headliners but they were awful...by the time their set was done there were probably 15 people left.

      @@tonypotts9652 absolutely right. In fact, a lot of bands paid their dues this way, and that’s what pisses a lot of them off about the music business these days-todays “musicians” are forced into the public by TV talent shows without actually cutting their teeth.

      By 1990 the rock scene was changing especially in Seattle.. Yellow sparkle suit coats and keyboards were out man. lol.

    People, this is the last ever live video of Andy on stage, the last MLB concert recorded (unless someone want to come forth with the Central show from March 9th). A few songs he recorded at home exist (Cool Marmalade etc) but this is the last documentation of Mother Love Bone, and you can see what a huge difference from 1989 this was, the studio experience of recording Apple, working with Kelly, you can see how poised this band was to absolutely blow it all open and take over.

      He actually said that “white boy, Jim Farmer” ain’t got nothing on Jeff Ament. Farmer was arrested on sex trafficking charges a couple years ago, I believe.

    If it wasn't for Landrew aka Andy Wood, I don't know if record labels would have looked into Seattle as much as they did. Of course I may be wrong. If so, tell me. If you grew up during Seattle and you were into music industry, confirm or deny. I feel like Mother Love Bone helped A LOT. I loved Devilhead and Malfunkshun, even Fire Ants with Andys other brothers Kevin and uhm.. shit I can't remember.

    Thanks to whomever shot this -- cuz vid cams back then were horrible.. especially audio.. but this is pretty f'in good considering ! I grew up in Seattle... never saw MLB, but did see the others (AIC/SG/PJ (actually as Mookie Blaylock)/QR/Nirvana) at the Off Ramp, Central, RCKCNDY and other places when they were just starting out. Had no idea then... what was about to happen... REMEMBER, at this point (Jan 1990) Eddie Vedder was in a San Diego band called "Bad Radio".. where he did sing "Better Man". . it's quite remarkable...here it is on VHS: ruclips.net/video/pco5t4ljIiY/видео.html

    Xana found Andy on my birthday and he passed 3 days later... My birthdays in a couple weeks. Andy was a TRUE Rock Star! If he wouldn't left us? I can imagine his influence on music in general. I mean he never got to even promote Apple and he's left a huge impression on so many of us! Andy was full of life you could just tell! His magnetism and charisma strutting his stuff! I love it... It sucks for us but he's at peace in a better a place. He was a good soul, I can feel it in his music. The love he had for Xana was deep in his heart you can really hear it in Stargazer, which they didn't play at this show surprisingly enough. R I P My Rock & Roll Brother I never met before... I feel like I knew you. Rock on Andy you're still the man...

      Not many had video recording capabilities in Tacoma in 1980&90's .
      Carl Byers (coldpop Carl) was/is THE MAIN MAN when it comes to live shows on VHS from this era. More Metallica Cult Body Count and Seattle stuff than anyone else I knew. Last I heard he was off working for the BEASTIE BOYS ... He was an O.G. head walker stage diver ala Toby Rage... But I digress

    The future was in my hands till I washed it all away. I don’t believe in smack so don’t you die on me. Where would I live if I were a man of golden words, or would i live at all? A dream like this must die. He who rides the pony must someday fall. Life is what you make it and if you make it death well rest your soul. He knew exactly what he was doing, a slower suicide.
