    Dallas Fuel’s Hyeon “EFFECT” Hwang announced in an emotional Facebook post that he’s retiring from professional Overwatch due to the state of his mental health and the pressures that come with the life as a pro player.
    “I returned to the league with such energy, but I regret that I couldn’t really show people anything before leaving,” EFFECT said. “But Overwatch is seriously no fun anymore, and I don’t want to keep stressfully practicing.”

    I feel bad for effect. He tried so hard to carry all of the first three stages and developed mental health issues, then right as he goes to Korea the meta shifts, Aero arrives, and Dallas is suddenly a fully functioning team again. Hopefully he has better luck next season :/

      Allen M Effect is so good, I don’t even think he’s overly emotional, it’s just if you practice so hard for so long at a game and you’re put with coaches that can’t teach you basic comms, you surely would get really annoyed at that

      He was pretty toxic for the team to be honest. After almost every match he had to go on social media and whine about his teammates and how they should step up their game. Even though he had skill that attitude is toxic for every team. Maybe that's why Dallas had some succes after he left.

      Clayton Penn I think if Effect was toxic to the point he was a reason for the slump, he would’ve been dropped with Rascal. I think coaching was the biggest thing tho, as they did run dive comps and 2-2-2 and brig and all, but meta definitely helped. But I think it was maybe 90% Aero

      No. He's the poster boy for a childish Korean attitude towards teamwork. When he no longer wins or feels like things are going slightly wrong within the team, he stops communicating or even trying to be part of the team. Effect is not the first Korean player to do this in the OWL.

    RIP Effect, the most tragic story of OWL in Season 1. Insanely skillful, but put onto a dysfunctional team and was given no support to help him fight the language barrier between him and his team. Hopefully new Dallas Fuel can help him more than they did Season 1, because he's an untapped ball of potential for them.

    • @porcorosso9898
      @porcorosso9898 6 лет назад +7

      Ken B. He wasn’t put into a dysfunctional team, he was apart of it. He went on Twitter after every loss and started saying negative stuff. He contributed to the negative atmosphere in the team. Instead of sticking to the team with an unwavering determination to win, he went back to Korea, leaving his team.
      You make it sound like he was put into a team of bronze players and he had to do everything on his own. Seagull is considered one of the best Dvas, Taimou is an absolute godly widow, unkoe is a insane Zen player, and Mickie... do I even need to say? EFFECT had a team full of “insanely skillful” players to back him up. They just needed a competent head coach to guide them.
      His team went to stage playoff without him. His team doesn’t need EFFECT to do good. If he didn’t give up in the end he would have apart of playoff with his team. His story isn’t tragic. It was a story of a guy not being able to handle the pressure. His team did and prevailed, why couldn’t he?

    • @kenb.6426
      @kenb.6426 6 лет назад +16

      CasuallyInsecure
      Here are some of the problems with the Dallas Fuel during the first two stages of OWL that in my eyes make the organization seem dysfunctional:
      Lack of translator for the Koreans on their team which was evident in the Rascal situation.
      Benching their already phenomenal DPS player, Seagull, and making him learn a completely different role, then buying a new projectile DPS player to replace him rather than buying a good tank line from the start.
      Lack of mental support for the players, evident in the Taimou situation where he was hospitalized after having a panic attack.
      Lack of discipline that allowed the exact tweet tirade by Effect that you mentioned after they lost games, as well as a lack of control over the other players who also tweeted negative things after their losses.
      Completely tossing out Cocco and making their DPS player Taimou pick up main tank for the first time in his career.
      Firing xQc after the Trihard 7 incident where xQc was unjustly being accused of being racist despite evidence showing that he spammed Trihard 7 even when Malik wasn't on screen.
      Also, to your point that Effect left to go to Korea and didn't stick with the team: he was in a position where he had no translator to help him communicate with the management, and he had no mental health support system to ease his stress. If he didn't leave to go to Korea, he would not have been able to maintain his lifestyle at all. You say that it was a story of a player who could not deal with the pressure and you are exactly right. But he needed that break. We saw how that pressure, when not dealt with, could hurt the players. Taimou had his panic attack and was sent to the hospital because of how much stress and pressure he was under, and there was no way of relieving that stress. If Taimou is under that level of stress, then, imagine what it was like for Effect, the player who was supposed to be the Fuel's star DPS, the player who was supposed to be the best Tracer in the OWL. Furthermore, I don't think it's fair to compare his mental state to the mental state of others. You said that his team handled the pressure and prevailed, why couldn't Effect, but different people have different thresholds of pressure that they can take. If Effect is not able to take as much stress as his teammates, then so be it! He needs more support than his teammates to function under stress, and that's fine. It doesn't mean that he cares less about the team than his teammates (the very tweets that you were critical of actually show that he cares a lot about the team), it means that he can't handle as much stress as his teammates, and that's not completely his fault.
      To your point that he was not the only good player on the team, you're right, there were many good players on the Dallas Fuel, but they were mismanaged so much that for Stages 1 and 2, Effect was the only player who could hard carry. Here are a few examples to point out:
      Seagull is only considered the best Dva currently because he grinded his ass off to learn the hero, but there was no reason to put him on that role in the first place. Seagull himself has said on stream that he didn't understand why the Dallas Fuel bought Rascal to replace him as projectile DPS when he already filled that role. Also, Seagull only really started showing how good of a Dva he was in Stage 3, which leaves the entire first 2 stages of OWL where he was not an important factor for his team.
      Taimou is an insane widowmaker NOW THAT HE IS ALLOWED TO PLAY THE ROLE, but Effect played it just as well, if not better in Stage 1 (for source, go to Dallas Fuel vs Seoul Dynasty where he goes toe to toe with Fleta and still performs insanely well). For most of the OWL before stage 4, he played main tank where he was extremely lack luster and did not perform well at all. I'm not blaming him, since it wasn't his decision to make him switch roles, but so long as Taimou was stuck playing main tank, it doesn't matter how good of a DPS he is. BTW, despite having Taimou as a DPS player to complement Effect's Tracer play, the management goes out to buy AKM instead of a solid main tank player. Because of the way that the Dallas Fuel was managed seasons 1-3, Taimou was also a non-factor.
      Mickie is an excellent Brigitte, but he is widely considered to be a lacking Dva compared to other Dvas in OWL, and since Brigitte only came out in Stage 4, I don't think that in the context of this discussion he was a positive factor in the team. Mickie used to be a world class Dva when matrix lasted for 4 seconds back in the OGN Apex days, but with the matrix nerf and the other changes made to Dva, other Dvas adapted to the new playstyle that brought out the most of Dva while Mickie suffered severely. Not to say that he's a bad player (because he used to be a top Dva and he is currently #1 Brigitte) but while Effect was active on the team, Mickie was more of a hinderence.
      You mentioned Unkoe, but I don't have much to say about him. I agree that he is an insanely talented Zen. However, since Unkoe came way later onto the team, for Stages 1 and 2 he was not there to support Effect. Furthermore, because of the lackluster tank line until OGE was allowed to play, he was getting dove on in the backline and was not getting the protection he needed, which made his skill less of a factor than it should have been.
      As for whether he hard carried the team or not, just watch Shanghai Dragons vs Dallas Fuel stage 3 to see how powerful Effect was for this team. I'll link below the stats from this game, but in summary, Effect annihilated the Shanghai Dragons and almost got double the kills of the next person on his team, who was AKM, the other DPS player on the team. Effect had by far the highest kills as well as the best K:D ratio, clearly being more effective than anyone else on his team. From watching the game live, Seagull performed alright, and AKM did his job as widow, but the team did not have enough synergy, which allowed mistakes that let the Shanghai Dragons win some fights. In this type of situation where a team does not have enough chemistry to work together, most of the plays will come from spectacular individual performances by talented players, and that's what happened with Effect. If Effect was replaced by Taimou or something, and Dallas didn't have Effect's insane Tracer, they probably would have lost to the Shanghai Dragons. This game was the closest you could get to hard carrying, and this trend of Effect outperforming his team was almost a constant throughout stages 1-3 with the exception of Seagull's Dva in stage 3 and Rascal when he was added to the roster, and MAYBE AKM, although I wasn't extremely impressed by him compared to Effect either.
      Here's the link to the stats www.winstonslab.com/matches/match.php?id=2377
      You are absolutely right that the Dallas Fuel went to stage playoffs without Effect, and that the team doesn't need him to be strong anymore. However, I don't think that Effect's break was the reason why the Dallas Fuel got better. Dallas got better in Stage 4 because they got a new and competent coach, they finally put a main tank player in the main tank role instead of switching Taimou and Mickie onto Winston, the meta shifted into their favor with a new hero that Mickie excelled at, and Seagull was able to play Dva at the highest level to allow Mickie to go to the Brigitte role. Effect provides the Dallas Fuel with a strong Tracer in case the meta shifts back into dive, and Effect can also play Zarya, Mccree, and Widowmaker on a top level, which could allow for more flexibility within the team (ex. Taimou would be able to flex onto his god-tier Roadhog and Effect could take over the Widow role). I mean, Effect was good enough that at the beginning of the season, before everything went downhill, Effect was starting as Widowmaker over Taimou because of how good he was, and Effect delivered. I think if he came back to a Dallas Fuel that could support his mental health better than Kyky was able to, as well as control him when he gets upset, then Effect would be an incredible asset to the team. Effect gave his all for this team, and it is apparent from the words of his teammates such as xQc that Effect practiced more than anyone else to do as much as he could for the team. Hell, xQc stopped streaming for a week because he was inspired by Effect and he wanted to gain Effect's respect by improving. Unfortunately, because the management did not reciprocate this effort, Effect was put in a situation where he needed to go back to Korea and take a break for his mental health. This is what I thought was so tragic about his situation and why I consider him the most tragic story of the OWL.

      Effect has been with Envy way before OWL. Language barrier wasn't the problem.

    • @kenb.6426

      The Sword Art Online Dickriding Association I don't necessarily think so. Mickie has been on Envyus since November of 2016, way before Effect, and yet even his English isn't perfect despite a year and a half of playing with this predominantly English speaking team. In this video that I'll link, Mickie is talking to interviewers in English, and to be fair they can understand each other, but he still makes grammatical errors and his pronunciation is off. Not to knock Mickie of course, I think that it's great that he can speak English this well as a non-native speaker, but that's just the thing: speaking a second language is hard, and it takes a very long time to learn the language well enough to be able to communicate exactly what you want to say how you want to say it. And since even Mickie who's been with Envyus for longer than Effect isn't able to speak English perfectly, I don't expect Effect to be able to speak it perfectly either. It's also important to consider how much each player speaks in their team. Mickie is a social person, and he probably had a lot of opportunities to speak English with his team, which would help him improve upon his English skills. Meanwhile, Effect is not as talkative, and I don't think that he would have practiced English as much as Mickie. Having struggled with multiple second languages myself, I think it's likely that Effect does have a language barrier problem within his team, although probably not as bad as many other Korean players within the league since I'm sure that Effect can communicate effectively to some level. Regardless, I think that the Dallas Fuel organization is large enough to afford a Korean translator to help Effect with his problems.

They have Aero as their head coach (best coach ever imo but what do I know), Jayne is gonna be a new addition as assistant coach, they finally have gotten their roster figured out, AND EFFECT (my favorite pro OW player ever, whom I really look up to) will be back; revitalized and prepared to put up the best performance ever as one of the best OW players in the world!
    I love you Dallas! Keep working hard! I’ll support through every obstacle and will be there with you til the end!
    I can see it now; Dallas Fuel: Season 2 Grand Finals Champions! MVP: (hopefully EFFECT lol)

    Next season will look amazing for Dallas Fuel if we manage to keep Effect (and retain Taimou, AkM and Seagull).
    Flex DPS: Effect, Seagull
    Specialist DPS: AkM and Taimou.
    Seagull can play off-tank for team comps where we want to run Effect and Taimou/AkM.
    We can also run Goats with Effect on Zarya, Mickie/Seagull on D.va
    Now we will be able to run a pure dive comp with Seagull on Genji and Effect on Tracer.
    We can run Mcree/76/WIdow team comps and play around them depending on patches and map requirements.
    And we have options to play Doomfist with both Effect and Seagull, now Seagull is hard scrimming Doomfist xD
    Add an extra main-tank to replace Cocco, and a flex support/main support for competition for Harryhook and Unkoe (Please sign Elk, Aero!), and next season is going to be great. #BurnBlue

      Itz Sneaky if he has the same mentality he as now, he has to go. He has proven that his mentality affects his team, he was benched in meta Athena forever because of his attitude and mentality. Andrew Carrillo they played Libero on tracer instead of effect for a reason. I agree that negative attitude needs to go, maybe even effect needs to go. There are a lot of great hitscan players in contenders and In owl who don’t play.

    • @andrewcarrillo779
      @andrewcarrillo779 6 лет назад

      Nothing Here To See kinda of agreed. Back then if you were a sub you really never got played. Effect didn’t play because at the time he could only play tracer. Which libero could play multiple hero’s. Effect took the time he had off to practice a shit ton of hero’s. Libero and meta Athena said he was the most hardworking player they have ever met. Also it was triple tank meta so you could imagine effect was useless at the time.

    I really wanted to see effect, seagull on genji, xQc on monkey, n Mickie run dive. I thought it would work but Kyky ruined that

    • @giacomorabaglia712
      @giacomorabaglia712 6 лет назад +3

      Joe Gusset not really, Mickie's DVa is in a bad place due to his playstyle, it didn't fit with xQc the few times they tried. The best would have been Seagull on DVa, xQc/OGE on monkey (i love xQc's aggressive playstyle, but OGE is crazily good), Effect on Tracer, Rascal on genji and for supp Harry and unkoe

    • @jzawesome0049

      giacomo rabaglia kyky did ruin it he was a bad coach. When Aero came Mickie looked much improved along with the Dallas fuel

    • @giacomorabaglia712
      @giacomorabaglia712 6 лет назад +1

      Mocho Cocco ok, i agree that Kyky was a bad coach, but people are saying that he was the only problem, everything was his fault, and it isn't true. You can watch Mickie's DVa vods from before the league. He didn't change his playstyle, it's his fault. Kyky should have helped, and he didn't, but there's a reason if most of the time they're running dive they just swap to their base comp. It's because Mickie doesn't work with DVa. He use all his matrix and he hasn't when they need to engage. He's getting better, but not even close to what it was or other DVa's player

    • @jzawesome0049

      Just face it. xQc isn't coming back. His attitude hasn't changed and what little work he did to fix it was ruined as soon as he got back to his stream and fell back into his old ways. No OWL team with any common sense would sign him. He's just too much of a gamble and too volatile.

    Honestly Idk where Effect would fit with the new Fuel. He would have to play Tracer and Doomfist specifically, but those two really aren't that meta. Every other dps is really covered already by Seagull and Taimou, and even Akm.

    • @andrewcarrillo779
      @andrewcarrillo779 6 лет назад +1

      Draven Gill they would sub out Tiamou and akm because effect has their hero pool and they can play a solid dive with him. But I just don’t want taimou and akm getting subbed a huge amount.

    • @dravengill6243
      @dravengill6243 6 лет назад +1

      Andrew Carrillo Taimou is back to Mr. Good Aim now, and Akm is a botburger. There's really no place he fits in now. He should probably get traded or released and picked up by someone who really needs a Tracer/Dive dps. Houston maybe

    • @andrewcarrillo779
      @andrewcarrillo779 6 лет назад

      Draven Gill Houston have a 12 man roster. Effect is better then taimou scene when he is at peak. Effect is third in all of OWL crit accuracy for widow. Effect can play everything taimou can but better. But one problem. Effect English and metal attitude isn’t very good. But taimou is still doing the job and doing it pretty damn good.

    • @MrPSgangsta96
      @MrPSgangsta96 6 лет назад

      Akm needs to be released. There were no reasons to sub him in for Taimou at all, he isn't good enough for OWL, maybe contenders but not OWL. That leaves effect and Taimou to rotate between each other. If they need to play a map where they want Junkrat, Soldier, McCree then Taimou plays, but if they play a map where they only need Tracer or Widow then Effect plays. And if they need both Tracer and another of the heroes mentioned then Taimou and Effect play together ahead of seagull like they did in the past.

    • @andrewcarrillo779
      @andrewcarrillo779 6 лет назад +4

      TheGoodguyperson effect has a bigger hero pool then taimou. Except effect doesn’t like to play junkrat. Seagull will remain off tank and effect will probably play most games instead of taimou and akm.

    • @Highonlollies
      @Highonlollies 6 лет назад

      Effect has a wider hero pool than taimou.
      They can definitely have taimou on hitscan and effect on projectile.
      Or if they want effect on the hitscan they can have seagull flex but that rides on how the meta shifts in half a year and if Mickie can play a competent dva (if she's still around) or some other off tank

    • @jzawesome0049
      @jzawesome0049 6 лет назад

      TheGoodguyperson Effect can play Tracer Genji Zarya and Dva Taimou can’t

    • @jzawesome0049
      @jzawesome0049 6 лет назад

      TheGoodguyperson Seagull plays main projectile so when Genji comes back in the meta we’ll see Tracer Genji dives from Dallas or Seagull could also play an insane Junkrat, Hanzo, Mei and Pharrah

    If he does come back, he might not even play. Tracer gets shut down by Brigitte obviously, and Taimou has been doing a great job as Widow. Plus, there are the rumors that he was extremely negative towards his team supported by his posts on social media and his general attitude. Of course, he may not be as negative now that KyKy is gone and Dallas is winning, but I do not want Effect to come back. At least not for the Fuel.

    • @rbarn7
      @rbarn7 6 лет назад +1

      William Powell Effect is definitely better than Taimou, but he’s toxic. Plus, Tracer is currently almost useless.

    • @Astoirien
      @Astoirien 6 лет назад +1

      If you watch his streams, he's actually not that toxic. Just imagine his thought process every game. It was probably something like "My team has no idea what to do, I have to carry" or something like that. I reckon that with the new coaching staff things will turn out for the best. Reasons for this being, the current implementation of actual strategies and plans, the now seen constant improvement of his team mates as well as a synergy that has started to form in the team. If you watched the past games, Effect pretty much went in by himself and tried to kill everything but now that they actually have a plan to stick to I doubt that he'll continue to see the situation as hopeless and be toxic.

    • @rbarn7
      @rbarn7 6 лет назад +1

      Dragon You’re right. I do know that Effect is not toxic on his streams, but there were rumors that he got tilted in OWL matches. Of course, I don’t know the truth. Seagull, Mickie, and the new coach have also been doing great, so now Effect may not have the carry mindset and get tilted. We will have to see what happens in Season 2. I hope whatever’s best for Effect and the Fuel happens.
