    Just FYI... I don’t use tallow or lard because I find them to be quite comedogenic. I don’t seem to run into any of the problems that you’ve had with aging, tho. It often takes my soaps 4 to 6 weeks to age, at which point, they are maybe 90% hardened and perfectly useable. I use roughly an equal amount of each: coconut oil, palm oil and olive oil. Sometimes I substitute avocado oil for the olive oil. Then I adjust my recipe to include whatever additives or superfatting that I want to do. I use Soapmaker to adjust my recipes, which is quite handy, and it is always dead-on accurate with the lye:oil ratios... one of the things that helps a lot with the aging is being able to adjust your water ratio in the recipe...

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 лет назад +2

      Of course you're not encountering issues if you're using palm oil; it's a hardening oil, just like tallow. I won't use it for environmental reasons.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  3 года назад

      Hi Michael! If the tallow won't melt, something is wrong. Tallow has a fairly low melting point, and if the shea has melted, the tallow should definitely be liquid. I am concerned that perhaps the tallow was not rendered and strained properly, which could mean that the measurement/weight isn't correct, which could result in a lye-heavy soap.

      Hemp butter isn't a "real" butter-is is typically hydrogenated vegetable oil mixed with hemp oil. These are sometimes called pseudo butters. The hemp plant does not make a butter. I've never used a pseudo butter in soap before; you'll have to experiment and see :)

    Hi Marie. Awesome video! Q. If I wanted to scent my soap batch, at what stage would you recommend I do this? After trace but before colorant is added? Also, is there a simple way to determine how large of a soap mold I need for a batch that calculates out at a total yield of 94 ounces/ 2664.86 grams? That's just under 6 pounds/2.6847 kilos. I want standard size soap bars that fit nicely in the palm of the hand. Finally, can you recommend a substitution for the hemp oil if I can't obtain that in my area? Thanks very much in advance!!! I've finally go up the courage to make soap from scratch instead of melt and pour and just successfully used Brambleberry Lye Calc. for the first time with your recipe - it worked! Yay! ;)

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 лет назад

      Scents are added after trace. Pigment additions are typically dictated by the design (you may wish to split the batter first, and you would usually want to add the scent before splitting the batter up).
      Your question on soap mould size is a tricky one because you're asking about volume determinations for weighted projects that will not have an easily determinable volume:weight conversion. I know the mould I use holds 100g oils turned into soap batter per 1" of the mold. So, it's 15" long, and will perfectly hold a 1500g oils batch of soap. www.humblebeeandme.com/my-soap-mould/
      If you don't have the hemp seed oil I'd probably just make a different recipe-hemp is right in the name of this recipe, it's kind of a big deal ha. For a new soaper I'd recommend this one: www.humblebeeandme.com/my-all-in-one-soap-recipe/.

      The titanium dioxide is the colorant. It can be made, but without the super white strip in the middle. I don't know of a natural white colorant. You'd just omit the titanium dioxide and have a solid colored bar. Or you could use a natural colorant to make the middle strip a different color, like orange, or brown.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 лет назад

      Well... I guess if you use "can" in the sense of nothing catastrophic will happen. Like, you "can" use olive oil instead of butter in cookies, but they certainly won't be anywhere close to the same as they would've been if you'd used butter 😝 Lard/tallow are hardening fats in soap, so if you want to swap them out you really should use a different hardening fat to end up with a bar with roughly the same texture/aging time 😊

    I had my first soap fail today and wondering if I can re-batch? When I added my my lye and water solution to my oils I started to mix and mix. At first it was thickening nicely, but then it started getting very very gritty. I guess it got all separated. Someone told me to wait a few days, take it out of the mold and force hot-process the soap. Once it is at the gel stage I should use a stick blender and pour in mold. I'm kinda desperate at this point because I used sooo much of my ingredients.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 лет назад +1

      Hmm. It looks like it got too hot, so for next time I'd try combining the oils and lye water at room temperature (side note-your oils and water parts should be close to the same temp, so the fact that they were 40°F apart may be part of the reason for your troubles).
      I've afraid I am not at all an expert on re-batching, however, I don't think it'll be a hot-process thing because saponification will still happen, it's just going to be ugly. You're just going to be trying to basically re-form it by melting it down again. From my experience with this I'd add as little water as possible to get it to melt, use a slow cooker, and be patient-the batch I did this with shrunk a TON because I added far too much extra water lol. My little cubes shrivelled up so much as they aged haha.

    Can I add fragrance to this soap such as patchouli EO?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  8 лет назад

      Of course! The rule of thumb is 30g EO per 500g of oils, but you can probably step that back a bit with patchouli as I find it's quite strong and lasts for ages in soap :)

    Just a suggestion... if you know what the weight of your pot is, you can just weigh the batch and subtract the pot, then divide the result....

      Yes. After the first batch, your confidence will soar. Get some stainless pots used and a nice stick blender. Olive oil takes longer to come together, so it gives you lots of time to obsess and freak out. Maybe that's just me.
      Marie is correct. Soaping is awesome.

    I followed this recipe to the tee. When I let the oils come to room temp the Shea butter hardened again. Would you explain why this happened? Thank you

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  4 года назад

      Fats solidify when they are at a temperature well below their melting point, so if this mixture solidified then you can be confident it cooled past its melting point. "Room temperature" is an average range of temperatures rather than anything specific, so if your "room temperature" is a few degrees cooler than mine that could do the trick. Happy making!

    I always thought that hemp degrades when heating. How do you still get the great benefits from hemp once it's made with hemp into a soap?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  8 лет назад +1

      I honestly have my doubts about the benefits of much of anything coming through in soap-saponification is a pretty brutal process.

    • @nwsupernova
      @nwsupernova 8 лет назад

      Humblebee & Me I find that a lot of products on the market today are utilizing it & I would like to get started with soap making myself. I just wanted to be able to get the benefit of doing so. I guess I'll do some more research on it to see if it's worth using in a soap or if I should maybe concoct an oil or body butter with it. Thanks for the reply!

    Can we use apple cider vinegar in soap?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 лет назад

      Kind of, but not very much, and I'm not clear on why one would. NaOH is extremely basic, so adding vinegar to it will cause a vigorous reaction (think baking soda vinegar volcano, but stronger), and will consume some of the NaOH, resulting in a higher superfat, though at unspecified levels. Adding vinegar to finished soap can result in de-saponification (www.lisabronner.com/a-word-of-caution-about-vinegar-and-castile-soap/).

    i would love to make this soap, but i use ounces instead of grams. i tried running this through the soap calc i use but it says i have to pick only 1 oil. i don't think i like that one anymore. i'm horrible at math so i was wondering how i could do this in ounces instead. i tried using the soap calc you did the video on and just couldn't figure it out. yes i know i'm hopeless at stuff like this. any ideas? i'm so embarassed about this. lol

      Hmm. You definitely can pick more than one oil on soap calc, so I'm not sure what is going on there. Maybe try this one? www.brambleberry.com/pages/lye-calculator.aspx.

    Can you clarify, if your mould is 15 inches and 1 inch equals 100 grams then your mould would hold 1500 grams. But your recipe is only 500gr.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 лет назад

      The recipe is in percents, so you can calculate it to any size you like. The add ins are listed per 500g, so if you made a 1500g batch you'd use the add ins x3. If you made a 500g batch with my mould you'd place a divider at at the 5" mark the fill it properly.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  8 лет назад

      I don't recommend it-electric beaters are designed to whip air into something, which we don't want to do here, and it makes splattering more likely, which we don't want to do with raw soap batter.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 лет назад

      You'd add the EO or FO at trace, ~30g per 500g oils. I'd probably recommend lavender for this :)

    I am not familiar with any of this, though I do find it interesting. Chemicals vs natural and what can be done. I must admit though, if you put that on a plate I would probably try to eat it. Looks like good cake.

    Don't your harder oils solidify when cooling to room temperature?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 лет назад

      There's enough added liquid oils that I don't find they solidify, though they do get more viscous. If you live somewhere extra super cold they may solidify, but I find they don't here in Canada :)

    Why do you have to cover the soap for 24hrs?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 лет назад

      Covering the soap helps trap in heat during saponification, which may or may not be desirable depending on the soap and the effect you're going for :) For instance, it'll help the soap gel, but it can also cause it to crack-depending on what's in the soap, and ambient temperatures.
