I've not seen many Alan King interviews over the years. That made this a real treat. He's consistent in his stories. Humble in his ways. No made up tales or reaching for glory. A real gentleman.
Exactly what I've been telling folks! House was a culture, long before House was an official genre in 1984! It did not start that year! Folks will seriously argue about that! I started in 1977 too! My first gig was my 5th grade Christmas party at school. So I've been at this, longer than a lot of DJs now-a-days. I am an original DJ from Maywood, IL... DJ XPRESS! Matter of fact, we're tailgating in Maywood this Sunday, Oct. 27th, 2024! The legendary Winfield Scott Park is the location! We start at 9am! I, along with a great line-up of other DJs, including Gene Hunt will be on the 1's & 2's!
So I remember my own reaction to that video moment. I was at the picnic and was going to stay until the very end anyway - but I was heading toward the exits, moving very slowly so that I could still be 'in the moment' of hearing the music. Then the music stopped, and I heard a familar voice. I turned around, and there he was on the screen. I was like whaaaaaaaat??? Dopeness.
I've met Mr. Alan King a couple times; very low-key and down-to-earth brotha who enjoys a good music vibe. The Obama store was amazing! Very straight and to the point interview.
Great interview. AK is very knowledgeable and I love how he explain his point of view without being influenced by others. Keep up the great work AK and Maurice.
