As a boy back in the early 70’s in the summers, I used to sit on an old luggage carrier sitting right outside the depot in Evanston, Wy., for days on end, all day, simply watching trains go by. The station master was in a booth right there, siting at a control board, managing incoming and outgoing traffic east and west bound. He invited me in several times, showing me as trains rounded the mountains east and west of Evanston on their way thru. What a great time. Love your back drop from photos. That’s Green River alright. Great work sir.
Hi Roy, I am going back to your December 2015 video where you describe in detail your plans for your layout and photos of each step. It was very interesting to go back and I wish I had done so on my layout as well. It's amazing how the layout features and camera angles give an illusion of a much bigger layout than actual. This is truly what modeling is about and you have captured it so well. Your later videos continue to enrich a wonderful track plan and certainly give you both the fun of running a "real" prototype plus and the ability to keep adding and improving which is at the heart of the model railroading hobby. Thanks, Roy!! - Dean from Minnesota
Looks really nice Roy-please keep us updated! I too have just started an N Scale layout after being away for awhile and my whole garage is now dedicated to this project. Thank you for this video and the well said narrative you gave.
You're very welcome, my friend. Doing videos for RUclips is almost as much fun as model railroading itself. I have a long list of ideas for more videos. I'm glad you've come back to N-scale. I was out of the hobby altogether for nearly 30 years before coming back to it in 2014, so I can imagine how excited you must be at the moment. ...Roy
Another really good and inspirational video, Roy. I enjoy watching your progress and your freight trains, and you are obviously a really nice person who enjoys sharing his hobby.
Really enjoyed the video Roy. You have done a great job on the layout. It is obvious that you really have enjoyed the whole process. Tim from Minnesota.
Thanks, Tim. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, indeed, I'm now having more fun than I've had since the mid-1980s when I built my last layout. ...Roy
Great woodwork Roy and I also love the perspective angles too ,giving the optical illusion of far larger layout. Absolutely fantastic , I’m so glad I’ve subscribed 👍
Very professional, great job Roy. I've just started an Ho scale layout with operations and i think you have persuaded me to change my plans to N scale. Ive always wanted to run long trains as well
Great job on the layout...I live here in Rock Springs just a few miles east of Green River The detail you have in your layout is near Perfect....Like you I found a rebirth so to speek about modeling railroads...lost my first one way back in my late teens early 20s..now I`m retired and building another one is HO scale and only 6'x8' at the moment.... and those back drops are amazing looks like someone flew over them took photos of them and then inlarged them...the detail in the Green River yard is perfect...Although Castle MT on the back drop now has I-80 running thru the bottom of it Looking forward to seeing it when its done Scotty
Thanks, Scotty. It's really great to hear from you. I love to hear from people who live in or near the area I'm modeling. Such people help me capture "the feel" of the area. I really appreciate your first-hand observations. Welcome back to the hobby. I was out of the hobby for a long time, too, almost 30 years in fact. Since coming back to it in 2014, I have been having more fun than ever. The I-80 tunnel through Castle Rock is just barely visible on my backdrop, but you really have to look close to see it. Right now, I'm having tons of fun doing the Echo Canyon series (based on Echo Canyon, Utah). I look forward to bringing you another episode in that series this coming Saturday morning. ...Roy
Seasons greetings Roy. I have really been enjoying your channel. I myself am finally starting on my very first venture into model railroading at the age of 46 after many years of planning and thinking. The Kato Unitrack has been the critical factor on being key to my start with the space I have available and the very limited expertise I have. Everything I have read and seen about it appears very positive and would like to get your feedback on what your experience has been especially on its ability for DCC use. Look forward to hear from you.
+Ratel Mike I wired my last layout for DC (in the mid-1980s before DCC and Kato track existed). Now I'm wiring my current layout for DCC, and quite honestly, I find it to be easier to wire than DC, and a big, big improvement over DC, because it allows me to focus on the diesels and not on a control panel. And Kato track is no more difficult to wire than any other track. With DCC, I don't need a huge control panel with a bunch of toggle switches as I did in the past. I don't need insulated blocks and wires running separately from the control panel to all those blocks. All I do need is bus wires running from my NCE PowerCab under the layout and feeder wires every 3 or 4 feet dropping from the track down to those bus wires. For feeders, I use Kato terminal unijoiners (Kato No. 24-818) which have a blue and white wire for each rail. I use matching blue and white 16-gauge bus wires under the layout. Of course, you have to keep the same rail blue all the way around the layout, and the same rail white all the way around the layout. (You can use any color wire; the important thing is to be consistent.) This is very important; otherwise a short will occur. Barrier strips are very useful for keeping the wiring neat and well organized. I carefully label every connection, both on the bench work under the layout and on a copy of my track plan. I hope to do a video in the near future, showing the wiring I've done, because I think that will be far more useful than my comments here. I think you won't be disappointed by wiring Kato track. Go for it. ...Roy
hi I do like the videos that you showed I now have switched over to N scale it's munch easy to get a layout. I have been given a small corner 6 the basement but manged to get a good size in and now working on a staggering yard in my l shaped design soon I will be hooking up the power and start running my units I still haven't name it but I think of using the Alaskan line
+Doug McKay Thanks, Doug. Welcome to N-scale, which is great for small spaces. I've been "working" on my layout for two years, but there's so much still to be done. My layout is kind of small, and that of course is because my layout room is small, measuring only 10 feet by 12 feet. Right now, my layout covers 7 feet by 12 feet of room space, but I have space to grow and eventually will be expanding my layout. I probably will add a new upper level as well. ...Roy
Great video Roy!! I'm working on my N Scale Canadian Pacific Layout. I'm in track planning right now. Any track planning video you have or a track plan would be helpful.
Yes, Piero, I used #6 turnouts exclusively. This results in yard tracks that are widely spaced, but #6 turnouts work much better than #4 turnouts. ...Roy
@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 Awesome! Thanks Roy! I have a plan of using 40 turnouts (20 left & 20 rights) on a N layout with two main lines and one auxiliary separate line plus a staging yard. My original plan was to block these four zones to DC with the option of switching to DCC from a turn of a switch, but as more time passes, the more it seems it's best to just do all DCC. Almost all of my locos are DCC ready but I do have a lot too that are not and I'm not afraid to convert them. :D Either way, I'll be busy! Cheers and stay safe Roy!
Okay - i watched this video and it was great. Do you happen to have the track plan though that shows what Kato track pieces you used to design the layout? In paticular, how did you design the compact ladders for the staging yards and the Green River yard?

One diesel alone can't pull a train of more than 8 or 10 cars up my helixes, even though both of my helixes are a "modest" 2 percent grade and even though all of my diesels are Katos. A consist of two diesels, however, makes an enormous difference. Right now, trains that are 22 or 23 cars long easily climb my helixes when headed up by two diesels. Besides, two or more diesels looks very prototypical, compared to one diesel. Sometime soon, I'm going to try a consist of three diesels, just to see how many cars they will pull.
