@Abe Lincoln. IDK why its funny. i guess its just the thought of it. like there was a person out there that thought to himself "you know what would be something, if i put a pirates hat on the base" ... i think thats why we find it funny
+Abe Lincoln Because historically pirates are people that would steal stuff and claim it as their own. The coach literally stole first base and the hat was put on it to claim it as property of the Pirates dugout
1:39 This shot is just perfect. The way the camera smoothly zooms in as the guy tosses the baseball cap on the bag. The hat slightly rotates the the left and stops at a perfect angle so that you clearly see the logo and the shape of the hat. The camera stops zooming in and focuses on the hat, giving the viewer a good few seconds to take in the beautiful imagery of the baseball cap on top of first base. Muaahh 👌 10/10
He was safe. Play it at 0.25 speed and go frame by frame and its a frame or two but he WAS SAFE. Foot is on the base before the ball lands in the glove.
Hahaha they were literally booing the fact that they brought out another first base. They hated it. They wished they just played with two bases I guess lmao.
Late 90's/Early 2000's baseball was amazing. There were so many hilarious moments.

Oh how have times and the Pirates have changed since 2001. I can't believe this was nearly 14 years ago. This is why instant replay was created for MLB.
Funny as hell even the first base umpire was trying not to laugh, but I lost it when the crowd started booing when they brought out the extra bag. They should have gone after the 1 mcclendon stole instead.
I went to the Pirates game the next night. They introduced McClendon during the starting lineups while showing a video of him taking first base. The whole stadium went nuts. It was awesome.
Jacob Gustafson Yeah. Brett Gardner started walking away like he struck out before the umpires had a chance to make a call on his check swing. There's no way the Mariners were going to think a fair game was being called after a second no-swing call. Some umpires are human trash when it comes to rookie pitchers.
Lmfao He's hilarious. I love his reactions and never care if he's right or wrong. Just a good laugh. How do the umpires not crack a smile at his reactions
I thought this guy was on of the players that got ejected and the umpires were gonna overturn the call, but I died laughing when he literally took first base
Max Scherzer I will refer you to this site: www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/05/the-evolution-of-cell-phone-design-between-1983-2009/ Which lists many of the cell phones available in 2001.
I know so little about baseball that even after reading the title and seeing the thumbnail I thought he got ejected and just stood on first base but no, this man deadass stole the base😭😭😭😭😭
This was one of my fav clips as a kid.. Its so deep amd kung-fu'y when you think about it. Such a bold and powerful, yet worthless statement. And the fact his team supported him and the crowd, its really one of the few genuine wins for the little guys 😆
I remember watching this game as a kid, only difference is being from Wisconsin I heard Matt Vasgersian and Bill Schroeder's take on this and it was hilarious.
Sandt, the Bucs' 1st base coach, looks like the manager of the Indians in "Major League" LOL McClendon stole first because obviously it wasn't of any use to the runners..I mean, with the umpiring that night, anything on the ground that required a throw to first was pretty much an automatic out, so why bother with the base?
Dude that put McClendon's hat on the bag in the dugout is a legend.
Epic lol
You're easily impressed aren't you? That comes with low intelligence.
Dugowt That wasn’t even a good attempt at trolling
Dugowt yeah, nice try.
Dugowt
Idk who you’re tryna get with that bait but i’m afraid it won’t work.
I love how they boo the grounds crew member who brings a new first base.
why he is the reasonable one
Lol right. They didnt even do nothing. They're just trying to help.
I'd boo him too 😠😠😠
@@DruidsCalling 😡
Cuz it's mad funny lol
he literally stole first base
Ryno7 haha....however i would find that funnier if it was second or third base..
Same lol
Nayeli Garcia lol i was gonna put 'i didnt know you could steal first base" but i put this. should i switch it? haha
Ryno7 The only other person who's done that Segura.
/watch?v=HZM1JcJwo9E
i saw it before lewiszim
The fact that they put a Pirates hat on the first base is hysterical.
TheBman24 why
@Abe Lincoln. IDK why its funny. i guess its just the thought of it. like there was a person out there that thought to himself "you know what would be something, if i put a pirates hat on the base" ... i think thats why we find it funny
+Abe Lincoln Because historically pirates are people that would steal stuff and claim it as their own. The coach literally stole first base and the hat was put on it to claim it as property of the Pirates dugout
TheBman24 That was pretty clever.
dude, you beat me to it, I was just going to say that.....
You know pirates, they like to steal
Haha good baserunning there lol
Nice one.
Always stealing treasures.
Best comment!!!!!!!!!!
Ha ha ha whatever
Baseball needs a rule where if the manager puts on a good enough show like that, they get the call overturned.
Evan Faas LMAO
Second this motion
😂😂😂😂😂😂

@nigelwestdickens At least then it would ve watchable

Steven Spielberg WISHES he could achieve such cinematic greatness
@@Commander_Shepard. Scorsese and Tarantino are crying right now after seeing such greatness.
My g u in film school???
??? Why would you type this in the comment section? I am disappointed in you
Well he is the first person to ever steal 1st base
Believe it or not he is not
I believe Sweet Lou Pinella did that hundreds of times and is well known for taking first base.
The announcer even said a la lou pinella
+Giantsfangotswag not really Segura who plays for the Dbacks now stole first when he was trying to steal second.. look i tup
+Giantsfangotswag ba dum tss!
1st base umpire wanted to laugh so badly.
PROCTOR it do look like that
Nothin personal , they are fans deep down too lmao
He tried so hard to be serious.
He probably did
He was safe. Play it at 0.25 speed and go frame by frame and its a frame or two but he WAS SAFE. Foot is on the base before the ball lands in the glove.
I see you too were just recommended this video.
It was obvious the first time I watched it and I have never seen this play in my life
A day late but me also
0:06 safe
Safe, he was allowed to steal first at that point.
MLB Rulebook: "A runner cannot 'steal' first base"
McClendon: "Hold my beer"
haaaa lolol
Well deserved like mate
Hold my hat*
Jean Segura: Hold MY beer!
Good thing he wasn't running when he stole it
Hahaha they were literally booing the fact that they brought out another first base. They hated it. They wished they just played with two bases I guess lmao.
😂😂
I find it funny that they just decided to get a different base and not ask for the other base back
Avery Heller imagine if they took the spare also 😂😂
@@myhackedxbox I think that if they could not restart play due to that issue, the official probably rule the home team forfeited the game.
Alex Clausing no it was just really stupid how they booed the guy for bringing another base in
If only he came back out and stole the other first base 😂
HeyIts Brian or if he took the other bases
Savage
Mister C very savage 😂😂😂
It would certainly be worth the suspension lmao
I do love how everyone gave him a standing ovation like they've been waiting for someone to steal a base for a long time
He was safe. Period.
Stoolie33 Tie goes to the runner.
Stoolie33 Yep. Slow it to 0.25 speed and it's obvious the runner's foot was on the bag before the first baseman caught it.
he was safe. pause at 6 seconds. foot on bag before the ball is in the glove.
There is no such rule in baseball.
goofyGAguy Umm...they teach that starting in T-Ball. Don't make yourself look bad.
Since he was fired from the Mariners, I would love to see him return to the Pirates as first base coach. That way he could do this at every home game.
This gets recommended to me every few months and I watch it each time 😂
Late 90's/Early 2000's baseball was amazing. There were so many hilarious moments.
Oh how have times and the Pirates have changed since 2001. I can't believe this was nearly 14 years ago. This is why instant replay was created for MLB.
I pity the Pirates from this era in the video.
Yeah, instant replay robbed us of fun tirades like this!
Crazy it is coming up on 20 years
Funny as hell even the first base umpire was trying not to laugh, but I lost it when the crowd started booing when they brought out the extra bag. They should have gone after the 1 mcclendon stole instead.
Hey who needs first base anyways! You still have second and third bases!!
That would've gotten twice as many boos lmao
The worst part about this is that the announcer never made the joke “he stole first base”... smh 😔
Yep
dont worry we have 2348057 youtubers to make the same joke for us.
I went to the Pirates game the next night. They introduced McClendon during the starting lineups while showing a video of him taking first base.
The whole stadium went nuts. It was awesome.
After close review the runner was safe.
I thought it was obvious the moment it happened... and I'm not even a baseball fan haha
See you in 5 years when RUclips algorithm bring us back together
Evan Suddreth sounds good buf
Maybe that'll be enough time for you to come up with an original comment. Good luck.
Hey I'm here June 2020 still going strong, are you guys still alive? Let me know!
Not until we steal first base.
Haha the algorithm is to fast.
And then Greg Gibson motions to both coaches.
This is one of the most iconic moments in sports and this is the first time I've ever seen it.
Walked off with that base like stone cold Steve Austin walks back to the locker room after he hit like 6 people with stunners...
I love how they started booing the guy bringing a new first base out 😂
Flipped out today too. Fuckin awesome. Good to see a guy with some fire.
Jacob Gustafson Was great. But as a M's fan it's hard to be excited about much of anything right now. Ugh.
Jacob Gustafson but he stole that from Lou Pinella.,.. he did that before likely someone else did it
Peter F. Earl Weaver was earlier than Lou. I've heard that Connie Mack could put on a show as well.
Marios worldnews jj
Guess you can really steal 1st base

Legend has it that McClendon still has the base to this day.
One of the best Pirates moments from the last 30 years... I seriously say that as a Buccos fan.
This was legendary
This was awesome. _Something_ needs to break up the monotony of the sport at times.
McClendon 2020...we need this kind of hard nosed no nonsense leadership😂🔥
Lmfao He's hilarious. I love his reactions and never care if he's right or wrong. Just a good laugh. How do the umpires not crack a smile at his reactions
1:02 "Don't laugh...don't even smile..."
The batboy nailing the toss of Lloyd's hat onto the upturned base is the icing on the cake.
I lost it when they put the Pirates hat on the base
Hats off to McClendon for the beautiful antics and RUclips for the Quarantine content
I love the old guy in the crowd that just says “oh yea OH YEAH”
I remember seeing this on sportscenter back in the day, always made me smile
The announcer literally narrated the whole situation
So he did his job?
The whole thing sounded like a radio-type call. Maybe it was a radio/tv simulcast
@@transitfan954 well it's that stupid fake accent they putting on

Thank you, MLB, for putting all this stuff online. Whoever is uploading all this, keep posting!
He was safe too. Replay showed Kendall clearly beat the throw.
I love the commentary of his actions like this is an athletic play
I'm surprised nobody noticed the woman at 1:10 who subtly removes her phone from McClendon's reach to prevent him from stealing that as well.

Best reaction to an ejection in the history of sports
Another episode of this is in my recommended list
What a legend.
I don’t even watch baseball but this is legendary
the more often stuff like this happens in baseball, the better.
I love how in baseball they generally don't fight so they come up with all kinds of alternative aggressive shenanigans.
I love Lloyd
4 years and no replies huh?
I watched the replay in x.25 so many times it was almost a tie but he was barely out.
This is from the dark years of the Pirates but still one of my favorite memories as a Pirate fan. Couldn't stop laughing at this.
\m/ been a Pirates fan since the day I was born in July of 89. This is still a highlight I love... even if it’s saturated in such misery. RTJR
Legend has it he still owns the base

The most exciting moment for the pirates over the 20 year span

Not without motioning to both teams first.
+belandino And the Dodgers would be celebrating in their dugout too.
who, the base?
Greg Gibson the home plate umpire?
I miss these rants
I was beginning to wonder what they did with first base, since not a lot of times you see a manger take a base with him when he gets ejected.
I come back to this video every 6months or so 😂
If you slow it down to 0.25x at 0:06 you can see that he was actually safe
I've never seen that before.only bag I remember got took was my man ricky henderson.good times!still GIGANTES all day though
why does the title start at “McClendon ejected”? Why not “ump botches his one job” first?
This is the best Pirates best highlight since 1980
In an interview after the game, the Umpire said "If he wanted a base bag, all he had to do was ask".
I love how the bat boy leaves his hat on the first base in the dugout after lol...
Lou Pineilla like "Oh, so that's how you do it?"
He was indeed safe... too bad they didn't have replay... but I'm glad they didn't cause now we have this amazing gem

He played in the MLB for years. I know he played for the Pirates and Cubs. Not sure who else, but I remember watching him play back in his Cubbie days
The scene was "capped" off perfectly by the bat boy putting LLoyd McClendon's cap on the first base bag.
