    One movie that should definitely be in the collection but completely flew under the radar in 2018 was the film “Leave No Trace”. A very quiet, understated film about a war veteran with PTSD, who lives off the grid where he raises his young daughter. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in years.

    We can name unpicked classics all day, but what I find particularly aggregous is how out of over 1000 spines, only SEVEN are animated films. The work of Satoshi Kon, Hideaki Anno, Mamoru Oshi, titles like The Wolf House and more are in desperate need of archival/redistribution.

    Some films not mentioned on this list that I think should be in the collection:
    Sleuth (1972)
    After Hours (1986)
    O Lucky Man (1973)
    Marat/Sade (1967)
    The Devils (1971)
    The Wicker Man (1973)
    Bedazzled (1967)
    Endless Night (1972)
    Seven Psychopaths (2012)
    Wake In Fright (1971)
    Akira (1988)
    Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974)
    Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf (1966)
    Aguirre, The Wrath Of God (1972)
    Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)
    Privilege (1967)
    Get Carter (1971)

      The Devils is a hard movie to come by. Warner brothers (or whoever distributed it) has been sitting on it for 50+ years. I found it streaming a few months ago on Shudder.

      As with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, AKIRA was a Criterion laser disc back in the day, but somehow never transferred to the newer formats, perhaps due to licensing issues and the film’s increasing popularity.

    These are surely great lists and they do deserve the Criterion treatment. The larger issue at hand is the fact that they have already been released by other prestigious distributors that have already been given a supplementary amount of prestige more than what Criterion has to offer. Arrow, Kino Lorber, Shout Factory, Vinegar Syndrome, Second Sight, Severin, DECAL, and etc. These films would look good on Criterion, but it's probably too late for it.

    It is kinda weird to realize that the movies you mentioned (and more) aren’t in the collection. I was actually surprised to hear some of those. The idea that Park Chan Wook’s Vengeance Trilogy (not just Oldboy) isn’t on Criterion is baffling, especially because you can’t really find a region 1 version of any of them on Blu Ray. But Drive My Car was recently added, Sound of Metal is coming soon, and Power of the Dog is a little further along.

    The list is silly because a large portion of these movies already have great releases, and won’t be licensed out. Most of the studios, other than Disney and Paramount, have put out stellar discs. Yes, Criterion is nice and prestigious, but they’re doing a great job restoring and releasing movies that truly deserve saving.

    "Drive My Car", "Sound of Metal" and "Power of the Dog" have joined the Criterion Collection since you posted this video. 152 to go!
    I'm also sure Criterion would love to add a lot the films you listed but in a lot of these cases, the reason a classic or an acclaimed art-house film hasn't been added may be due to rights issues.

    Very mainstream and some with major recency bias, Criterion at their best are about undiscovered and weird gems; foreign language films, under acclaimed masterpieces, weirdo films like pink flamingos and eating raoul. I feel like if they added most of these, they'd be losing their way (which maybe, they have been recently)

    Good list. I don’t disagree with any of your choices…but many on your list are pretty easily available on other releases. Personally I look to Criterion to do high quality presentation of films that are difficult to find or maybe out of print from other studios. First when they were Lazer Discs Blade Runner and Zulu were part of the CRITERION COLLECTION. Also I thougtht transpotting was, though I have never seen it. Also a film that they did have, and I wish they would bring back is HIGH NOON. I have the Lazer disc, and the audio commentary was fantastic and very funny. Also classics they had in the past were JOHN WOO THE KILLER and HARD BOILED. Also they had WIZARD OF OZ. Who can forget there three JAMES BOND films, Saw all of them, and listened to the commentaries, which upset Alber Brocolli that they were forced to take them off.

  • @orpheus9037
    @orpheus9037 Год назад +2

    The film that most needs to be claimed and added to the Criterion Collection right now is the full, uncensored version of Ken Russell's The Devils. It is near impossible to find this 1971 film on the market save for some offbeat European video labels, likely of dubious quality (on DVD, no less) featuring the censored version, which are being privately sold on websites like Amazon. The film was deemed "controversial" if not offensive at the time of its original release and Warner Brothers, who produced and distributed it, has apparently grown ever-more gun shy over the years about re-releasing it. The hilarity of this is that not long after releasing The Devils, Warner Brothers released The Exorcist, certainly as controversial if not more so, and they've been perpetually re-releasing that film in various "new versions" ever since. Go figure.

    • @MealDealSupreme
      @MealDealSupreme 10 месяцев назад

      BFI released the UK DVD, and by no means are they of Dubious quality. Also the controversy of The Exorcist does not compare to the shit storm the Devils had, and is still going through. They refused to let the BFI even release the censored version on Blu Ray, even though it was 100% possible.

    Pretty good list (though I’d gladly trade JAWS for Kurosawa’s RAN or Gaspar Noe’s INTO THE VOID just for starters). APOCALYPSE NOW merits inclusion, but for prestige purposes only as it’s hard to see how the transfer and supplemental materials of the current release could be improved-upon. 2001 was a deluxe Criterion laser disc back in the day - I still have my copy, though I haven’t watched it in many years - and have no idea why that didn’t result in a DVD and Blu Ray version, which would be awesome.

    This is a great list. I’ve seen most of them. Short Term 12 is amazing. Some films on this list, I’ve seen but have forgotten about (Submarine, Slow West). Idiocracy needs to get a Criterion release, if not released on some boutique label. Such a prescient and hysterical film, but the current release gives no reason to purchase it.

    Aaron!! Love your list!! My name is Mac and I too am a huge lover of the Criterion Collection!! I absolutely adore the movies they have and I buy like a shit ton of them on Blu ray when the summer sale is around 🎥🎬😊 I do believe Criterion needs to add many more titles! It does take a while for them to add films since there’s a lot of licensing and copyright stuff involve that takes months for Criterion and film studios to agree on. Here’s my list of films that must be on Criterion:
    Chariots of Fire (1981)
    Good Will Hunting (1997)
    The Sixth Sense (1999)
    Magnolia (1999)

    I think I’ve figured Criterion out. They love having movies from directors they want to talk/hangout with. Since most directors “approve” the blu ray or 4K transfer for each of the new releases. Hence why we have almost every David Lynch and Wes Anderson movie on criterion now. Also no shot they ever put a Spielberg movie on criterion haha.

    Hard to take this Criteron thing too seriously when they include Dazed and confused, Incredible Shrinking Man, Blowout, and Barry Lyndon (this got more razzies for worst movie ever) and they omit, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting and many other greats......it is all rather silly.....and hard to find this credible.

    • @MealDealSupreme
      @MealDealSupreme 10 месяцев назад

      1) those are 4 fantastic films (all of which are better than Good Will Hunting)
      2) Barry Lyndon actually got 0 Razzies noms, as the Razzies didn't exist for another 6 years
      3)Why is it silly that they've released 4 critically acclaimed films from master directors (again, all 4 you mentioned) and not 4 other mainstream studio titles that have great releases from their owners (except for Butch Cassidy, but that's with Disney now)
