I love how the antagonist in this movie who is so overwhelming against a human doesn't waste time with a monologue and just absolutely bodies the protagonist in seconds. Need more of this in modern day movies 👌

I remember watching this in the Cinema in 1999, never seen Arnie so vulnerable in a movie before, his acting as a tortured soul where his wife and child got murdered to being beaten up badly by Satan himself was very underrated, it showed that Arnie is an awesome actor...damn can't believe this was 1999, time has gone quick.
Nobody really can explain exactly how fast time goes the older you get. Once you notice it's happening, it's already too late. Such a weird and scary feeling.

Even if you hate this film you have to admit it has probably one of the best incarnations of the Devil, from the brilliant Gabriel Byrne in his human form and then the massive and terrifying true form of Satan.
The best representation of Satan is in the movie Constantine, remember according to the bible the whole reason he became the devil is because he was to beautiful as the Angel of light.

Test audiences preferred the ending where Jericho dies. Even though the "resurrection" ending was never released, it was used in a novelization of the movie.
The shot of all the windows going dark, as if there is nothing left outside the church, is such a creepy touch. Genuinely gave me a little bit of a chill.
Fun fact: For the scene to be as realistic as possible they actually summoned the Satan and Arnold let Satan possess him. He also impaled himself for real later to banish Satan from the world of living.
I've never seen this but I love the touch that he has to destroy every religious icon or symbol in the church including the stained glass windows before he can actually enter.

Cool story about this scene…originally Arnold was supposed to use a machine gun and blast Satan back to hell. Yes, absolutely as stupid as it sounds. They brought a priest in as a consultant for the film and he says something along the lines of “this story is great, but why does it have to end like that? Why can he not win with faith?” So they changed it, and I must say the ending is MUCH better for it!
Let me tell you something: There have been numerous cinematic adaptations of Satan/the Devil but this is, by far, one of the most intimidating and sinister. He's not so much an entity as he is a malevolent force, which is reinforced by the earthquake and wind he unleashes on the church. Truly terrifying.

the build up was like 100x times better than the reveal, what a disappointment for how good the build up of the scene was Satan just looks stupid rather than horrifying or intimidating. One of the things I loved in this movie was the prop sword that Arnie used in the end. It was the exact design of the Thundercats Sword of Omens minus the Eye of Thundera. I looked up for that sword and the closest thing I saw of it is that is called the Sword of Michael, and I saw it once at a Malls blade shop around the same year this movie came out.
I really liked Gabriel Byrne in this one. He played one of the most convincing devil characters ever -- without a lot of CGI (apart from this scene, obviously...).
This is probably the most biblically accurate depiction of Satan I've seen in a movie. No red guy with horns or corny quippy British dude. Just a spiteful dragon like entity.

Nevermind. It was all a 1/6 miniature. But they did use a real Cathedral for the beginning shots of the scene. Very well done! But I also notice that at 0:46 Arnold seems to disappear from the scene.
The movie never said that was Satan's true form. I think that's just the form he took to scare Jericho, before he posessed him. In the beginning of the film, he had more of a translucent appearance.
And he was also smaller when he possessed Gabriel. Maybe this is his special "berserk" mode, he must have been really pissed off by Jericho at this point.

Vigo did a better Satan role in Prophecy....
And the sexiest was Elizabeth Hurley from bedazzled with Brendan Fraser.

Nevermind. It was all a 1/6 miniature. But they did use a real Cathedral for the beginning shots of the scene. Very well done! But I also notice that at 0:46 Arnold seems to disappear from the scene.
It's still very ridiculous the fact that he waits for Satan to appear and worse waits for him to enter his body...
The movie never said that was Satan's true form. I think that's just the form he took to scare Jericho, before he posessed him. In the beginning of the film, he had more of a translucent appearance.
And he was also smaller when he possessed Gabriel. Maybe this is his special "berserk" mode, he must have been really pissed off by Jericho at this point.

Alot of original Christians & Jews were monks. They explicitly avoided delving too much into politics unless asked to.

This scene creeped the heck out of me as a teenager. 😨 Gave me nightmares for a time but I love the way Satan looks. For a horrifying, terrible look this is exactly what I pictured for him! Truly demonic and terrifying in every way!
