You have a higher chance of getting an S class pirate freighter if you set up your warps so that your 5th lands you in a pirate system. I think the pirate system gives you a 5% chance of the pirate freighter spawning as s class compared to like 1-3 in other systems. The way I take out the freighter is disable the warp drives them take out the 5 or 6 big guns up top and then board when you get the chance as soon as you board use your scanner to check the class and if it's not the class you want just reload, rinse and repeat

I farmed for the Pirate Dread 50 times in a pirate system and the highest drop was 1 B class. Either the 5% doesn't apply to dreads or the system I was in was broken and acting like a conflict 1 system.
Playing the game blind, the first time I warped in and was attacked by pirates I think I shot them all down and then went on my way. The second time, I think I accidently must have hit a sentinel because suddenly I was fighting waves upon waves of sentinels. I had no idea there was even a freighter involved in these battles, let alone that I could obtain one. So, at this point, is there a way that I can get a free freighter or am I now required to pay for one? Do I just look for them in space, fly in and then talk to the captain about purchasing? Maybe I should just consider re-starting with a fresh save? I'm not that far - I just recruited people to my base and am working on their quests.

Hope you're able to get a capital freighter soon. I haven't played on switch so I'm not sure of the differences.
I'm not sure if this is just me but the save and reload thing does not work. When I reload and jump back to the same system there is no battle happening. If I reload and wait for over an hour and then jump back to the same system I find the battle again.
You have to chose the restore point option and not load a save its not the same. If its what you are doing.
