  • With pain of heart, we present the teachings of St. Paisios to correct the blasphemies of Archbishop Elpidophorus and guard the faithful against his lies, whose speech was presented by Bishop Athenagoras at the opening of a Hindu temple in New Jersey on October 4, 2023. Archbishop Elpidophoros writes: “This Hindu temple represents a Sacred Space…May the opening of this beautiful shrine be a beacon of joy, understanding and harmony within the Hindu community and beyond…In the spirit of love and fellowship, I offer my congratulations and blessings for the success and flourishing of this sacred endeavor.”
    St. Paisios’ words to a Greek Orthodox seminary graduate would apply today: "You are harming yourself and others when you relate this refined Hindu nonsense and at the same time present yourself as a graduate of Chalki. Be careful, you will become possessed by
    the devil."

    ______
    St. Paisios writes:
    They practice and practice but what do they achieve in the end? Orthodox temperance and abstemiousness - ascetic discipline in general - always aims for a higher spiritual purpose, the sanctification of the soul. The Hindu’s satanic and worldly asceticism results in an agile body, flexing arms and legs like a paper puppet so they can be admired by fools and mocked by demons.
    Some of our people go to the Hindus and are taught to say in the Hindu language certain incantations about Christ, Panaghia and the Saints. Some may know that these things are blasphemous, others may not, in the end they become possessed by demons. Then they start uttering incoherent words. They eventually become delirious, and onlookers consider them to be in a spiritual state, but this is actually a demonic state.
    What can you say? The confusion is immense! There was a sign outside a Roman Catholic Church in Paris that read: "Teaching of the Jesus Prayer with the yoga method." What have they come to! No wonder psychological problems abound, and people lose their mind.
    People in today's strange world find comfort in strange things, not in what is right and true. They know India, on the other side of the world, and they travel there to experience its magic. But they ignore the Holy Mountain, which is in their own country, right next to them, with the true mystical life in Christ! A student told me that he went to India and stayed there for three and a half years. He was seeking the truth about the religions. Finally an Indian told him, "Why did you come here? What you seek is to be found in Orthodoxy. That is where the light is. Go to the Holy Mountain to find what you seek." That is how he returned to Greece and came to the Holy Mountain.
    Impressed by the Elder's spiritual gifts, the man asked him about meditation and other spiritual techniques. "Look, my child," the Elder kindly interrupted him, "techniques do not matter at all. You are trying, but where you are digging, there is no gold; there is just the devil. The gold is Christ."

    So true I spent 10+ years in occult / esoteric studies before realising how lost and prideful I was. The beauty of Christ is that the truth is exoteric and you can know Christians by their fruits, it's in the open light and truth of their actions. Completely opposite to an occult/esoteric orientation. Glory to God!

    As a former member of a western Hindu meditation guru cult, I appreciate this! Self deification is NOT True. I never did Yoga, but bowed to stone and metal idols and worshiped a very flawed Indian woman and “myself.” I had plenty of “spiritual experiences” that were real. Demonically inspired and REAL. These will be described in my book if I can get the preface and epilogue finished.

    I’m an Indian Hindu who has converted to Orthodoxy. While I still think that there is some truth in Hinduism, after a long period of exploration and reflection, I came to feel that Orthodoxy has the fullness of the truth. I think a lot of these things St Paisios is saying about Hinduism are true, but there are also some genuine holy people in Hinduism who truly love God and search for Him with all their heart. I don’t think all of Hinduism is demonic or satanic. But certainly, the version of Hinduism that has been exported to the West has become very twisted and perverted.
    All that being said, I do find it really weird and inappropriate for an Orthodox bishop to be inaugurating the opening of a Hindu temple! That really doesn’t make any sense.

      They can’t be holy if they are worshipping false gods. They may be trying their best and have good intentions, but they are not holy. To be holy is to be energized with the grace of God, and God does not bestow his grace upon unrepentant idolaters, no matter how good their intentions are.

    • @shivabreathes
      @shivabreathes 6 месяцев назад +33

      @@therealkingbaldwin To quote Metropolitan Kallistos Ware: “We know where the Holy Spirit is (i.e. in the Orthodox Church) but we cannot know where he is not”. In other words, we, who are ignorant and sinful, are in no position to judge upon whom or where the Holy Spirit is. The wind blows where it will. Rather than condemning or judging others, including those of other faiths, let us kill our inner Pharisee and focus on our own sins and repentance.
      For the record, I have been in the presence of very holy people and places in India, and I am convinced that the Holy Spirit is present there, at least to some degree. Not everyone there is an idolater. There are true men of God who seek and yearn for Him with all their heart, and I’m convinced the Holy Spirit is with them.

      Secondly,I don't think I could consider you a orthodox if you still think there is some truth in Hinduism, the scriptures are absolutely straight away told that Jesus is the only truth and all is liar ,so if you think that there is some truth in Hinduism then you should repent or either leave the faith completely,we don't need someone like you who is double mind in the orthodox Church

I would ask the same to the catholics concerning their own pope. They separated from the orthodox partly because they believe the pope is God's spokesperson on earth and now some of them want to say he is a false teacher. Well, that's what the protestants say who they have been calling heretics this entire time. I feel it is a sign God is judging them as they judged others.

    Sanskrit is older than ancient Greek. Greeks use the Hindu Numeral System not the Roman numerals. Yoga is a part of Hindu practice. Idolatry is any symbol or word that represents God. Hindu mathematics predates European mathematics. India is NOT poor, it was LOOTED by Abrahamic faiths. India is far richer than Greece today ,only after 75 years of freedom. India was the richest part of the world before the Abrahamic faiths invaded India. The Abrahamic faiths had to loot other countries because they are poor.
    Hindu scriptures like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata are more ancient , is written in ancient sanskrit which is older than classical Greek and more perfect than classical Greek is written in verse format AND is considerably more vast than the Illiad or the Odyssey.
    Hindus are vegetarian
    Hindus are teetotal
    Hindus do not do drugs, smoke.
    Hindus don't eat egss, mushrooms, onions and garlic
    Hindus believe in waking before sunrise everyday in order to meditate on The Supreme
    Hindus are taught to REVERE all living things and to practice NON VIOLENCE
    Hindus gave martial arts
    Millions around the world have benefited from yoga asanas ...simply look at a yogi and see how fit they are. To be fit is NOT to show off the body BUT to be physically and mentally fit so that they can practice God Consciousness. No one needs to be hungry in India, EVER. Hindu and Sikh temples provide FREE FOOD to ALL, rich or poor.

    In St. Fursa's vision, which I was just reading about, the angels were very clear that fasting and ascetic struggles are profitless if we don't struggle against the deceit, envy and greed within us.
    I favoured these practices after encountering God and wanting to know more and God convicted me enough of the pride that I saw through the goal and those gurus who had seized it with pride. It was after almost accidentally awakening a demonic force then that I ran to God and He answered with the Bible until very much against my will I obeyed and read it. Thank the Lord I was baptised a few years later.
    I am curious about something though - not so much a contradictory as a complementary factor to the topic at hand I think.
    I have read that the Orthodox Church does not replace culture at large (obv it does replace sinful aspects) but it sanctifies it. I have also read that different gentile nations learned different truths to prepare them to recognise the Gospel Truth during these tumes. We see this at the Areopagus in Acts, for example.
    In my own Irish hagiography we have saints like Erc, Dubhtach, Fiacc and others who were the leading pagan druids and bards in St Patrick's time and they immediately recognised him and disobeyed their kings for his sake and like many of the last druids became the first Irish priests (ironic for the modern "druidic revivalists" I think). I heard that their grasp of triune patterns of nature was in part what prepared them to recognise God as Holy Trinity.
    So I would be very interested if yourself or anybody else can refer me to any Church Fathers who have written on this aspect - the incomplete knowledge granted to the scattered nations that prepares them to receive the Gospel and repent of their old idols and sins.
    Thank you for even reading this long winded query, Timothy, and for all that you do. May God bless you!

Are we to ignore our own experiences of friends and acquaintances, and perhaps of even our own selves, who have practiced mediation and yet also exhibited, at least, a minimal amount of compassion sufficient enough to save (or try to save) this theoretical drowning man? Is he suggesting that meditation itself precludes compassion? Or that the label of Hindu (a rather imprecise and flexible label) precludes compassion?

    Sir,christianity has many similarities with Hinduism thereby violating 2 cardinal principles of Abrahmic 3 sibling faiths.
    1. Trinity violates monotheism as male God appears in 3 forms: Father,Son(Jesus Christ),Holy Spirit.
    2. Formlessness and worship of idols as Jesus Christ,Mary depicted in churches.
    In fact God appearing in human form is a cardinal principle of hindu faith. And Jesus Christ appearing in human form replicates it.
    There are many more similarities like folding hands while praying,monks and nuns in monasteries and so on.

    St. Francis Xavier obliterated brahmas in India and exposed them. He even raised many people from the dead in the name of Christ and converted thousands.
    prayer of St. Francis
    My God, I love thee;
    not because I hope for heaven thereby,
    nor yet because who love thee not are lost eternally.
    Thou, O my Jesus,
    thou didst me upon the cross embrace;
    for me didst bear the nails and spear,
    and manifold disgrace.
    And griefs and torments numberless and sweat of agony;
    even death itself,
    and all for one Who was thine enemy.
    Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ
    should I not love thee well?
    not for the hope of winning heaven,
    or of escaping hell.
    not with the hope of gaining aught,
    nor seeking a reward,
    but as thyself has lovèd me,
    O ever-loving Lord!

    and in thy praise will sing,
    solely because thou art my God,
    and my eternal king.

      Unfortunately, Christians will NEVER admit that God manifested Himself as a Person a long time before Christ, as in Krishna and many other divine avatars - and will do so in the future too. Christians are forced by theology to say that their version of reality is the one and only "true" reality and condemn absolutely everyone else, including each other on small theological differences (just like Muslims). A Hindu can say, "Yes! Jesus was divine! Let's worship together!" - a Christian can only cope. The truth is that God is infinite, by definition. You are all sons of God, just like Christ said, and the so-called "Church" never did, and never will have a monopoly on truth. That said, Orthodox theosis is a good thing. But by blackening the character and pursuits of people on other spiritual paths, they are not doing themselves a favour.

      Not sure about that. It seems easy to “demonise” Hinduism as this pagan, demonic, satanic etc religion. I’m an Indian Hindu who has recently converted to Orthodoxy. I actually think there is a lot of goodness and truth in Hinduism (but, of course, Orthodoxy has the fullness of the truth, which is why I converted) but it’s very badly misunderstood and has also been very twisted and perverted in the West. As we are told, we know where the Holy Spirit is, but we don’t know where it isn’t. I don’t think we should be so quick to pass judgment and condemnation on other religions.
