This was an unexpected delight I stumbled on. I’m a professional illustrator but quite ill at the moment and finding even to difficult to watch, so watching you tube but feeling bad I’m not painting. This is a wonderful inspiration to me. What a beautiful illustrator you are, and such a gift with colours. You make it look effortless. Beautiful. Thank you
Kelly - I have just found you on RUclips and I am enthralled with your teaching, your art, your talent, and your nice voice. I am particularly intrigued with the circles that represent each month, and have started my own, but what you can accomplish in 5 minutes takes me at least an hour. (😮). I hope to shorten the time, but am not worried about it; this is a fantastic project! Thank you! I’m for sure one of your new groupies ~ 😊
Thank you for the giggle today, I needed it and welcome to In the Studio! I do have a course on this called Circle of Delight if you want to visit me for 31 days and paint together. Make sure to get on my newsletter list, the Rooted Chronicles, for periodical course discounts.
Of course not. I was inspired by stitchers doing yearly phenology wheels. Have fun and enjoy the daily ritual of capturing your life one item at a time.
I have a course all about it called Circle of Delight where I talk design, ideas, color and painting. You might like it, the Teachable link is in the video description box.
When I was in high school, girls wearing plaid wool skirts that wrapped around was popular. They held them shut with one of those big pins. I think that's what they are from.
Those keys are definitely a type of locker key from forties and fifties . Swim locker /basket. I can understand the thought of kilt pins but no. As someone of Scottish decent who wore kilts, at times, kilt keys are of a finer quality. Those are great fun keys. As a crazy antique hunter, I would have grabbed them as well. 🙂
I love your idea, what a great way to keep the painting every day! @12:25 They are probably for identification for laundry they close large/small mesh bags weaving in and out of the mesh and then closing shut.
That might be a possibility because they have numbers on them and are very large so laundry makes sense. Thanks for being inspired by this art process!
This is the most beautiful book I've seen, what a wonderful diary idea and what a talented artist you are. Not just your artistic ability but your imagination is so creative. I just found you on line yesterday, now I'm so excited to follow your art! - thank you. Sandy, NC
Thank you and it is such a beautiful gift to give yourself - 5-10 minutes a day creating! I shared the results of the year from Daily Painting if you haven't seen it yet, enjoy!
I just loved your Circle of Delight class! It really was stress-free and so much fun. I liked my finished piece so much that I framed it and keep it here in my studio. The final result is awesome and looks so complicated. But each element was small and easy. I learned so much! Thank you! I love seeing your creativity! PS - I love seeing what treasures you collect. It is so much fun!
What a GREAT idea! I totally love this way to break down practice into smaller chunks! I am newer to watercolor and love to swatch new additions to my palette but then hit roadblock when comes to practice.
I am so happy that you are inspired YEAH! No one says your swatches can't be little things of Delight, right? Have fun with them and make them something that brings a smile to your face. Enjoy the practice most of all!
YEAH! I'm so happy you were inspired. This creative 5-10 minute practice let me create 390 pieces of art for 2023. I offer a course called Circle of Delight if you are interested in the design and more of the process of the consistent art practice.
Thank you so much! I did a follow up video where I showed the entire year, make sure to check it out if you are interested. Love that you did that practice in December!
Thank you so much, I appreciate your kind comments! There is a new video on how a year of this content helped me create every single day. Check it out for more inspiration.
Thank you so much and hope it inspired you to try one! I just shared the full year of this practice on my channel, search for daily painting, it should come up.
A complete newbie here, and this idea is such a wonderful way to think about a beginning art practice. Love everything about your presentation and storytelling (which is how your video strikes me). 🙏
Thank you so much. My Circle of Delight is all about capturing my day-to-day creative life, just visually and yes, a bit of a story too. Hope you will give it a try for yourself!
Thank you Susan! I do have a course called Circle of Delight where I walk you through design, painting and creating one piece a day with you. You can find the link in the video description box if you are interested. There is also a Daily Practice video showing you the whole year of these circles and how it changed my art.
Thank you so much. It has taken me about 3 years for them to develop into what they are now. Just happy they finally made a style appearance I was waiting patiently LOL
I just found you, what a wonderful way to start the new year!!! You have a beautiful imagination and style! Your color selections are gorgeous and I love them! Thank you so much! I can't wait to paint with you in the coming new year!
I'm thrilled that you were inspired by this beautiful art diary. It has been so much fun painting something small every single day of the year. Happy New Year!
Thank you so much. The circular format is how I saw all the stitched phenology wheels (that's the original idea behind mine) and it intrigued me so I kept it. It adds a lot of charm and fun angles for the elements too.
This flip through had me captivated from the cover! Everything is beautifully painted and it tells your story in such a unique way! I hate to tell you this, but I think I'm going to have to steal your idea! Giving you credit, of course! I am curious about how much you planned ahead as some things overlap, sit behind, etc. Did you pre-plan anything other than the divided circle?
Thank you for loving it as much as I did! I didn't preplan, just went with the flow. The pieces I did first got full attention of the space, the rest I had to manipulate to fit in. Have fun and if you are interested, I did a course on this called Circle of Delight. You can find more information in the Teachable link found in the video description box.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I really do appreciate it. Your adventure helps me to look for ordinary things to paint. And I love the idea of this for a whole year of inspiration. Look out 2024.
I am so happy that you are inspired by this project! I hope you do create one for yourself, you can start anytime, you don't have to wait for a new year. Enjoy the process!
Is the circle directly on the paper, or do you cut out a separate piece of watercolor paper for the circle. I love your paper! Your work is some of the most beautiful and creative I have seen. Thank you for sharing your talents ❤
Hi Kelly! This is so beautiful. I am a new subscriber and am enjoying watching your videos. I am tempted to take the Circle of Delight class but I am new to watercolor and not very artistic. Do you think I should wait and build my skills before attempting this? Thanks for sharing your talent with us!!
Thank you for watching and welcome to In the Studio! Hurry and sign up for my newsletter (the rooted chronicles) today, you can find it in the video description box because there is a 20% off coupon until September 2. I actually used a large bowl for mine but for the course, I found a great tool that already came with dividing lines which made it so much easier to create.

I'm so sorry to hear you are ill, feel better soon and then you can get back to painting. For now, just relax and gather creative inspiration!

The pins could be for horse blankets. I love your calendar :)
Thank you so much Betty, I appreciate it.
Horse blanket pin are exactly what they are. I still use them! Great site!
Thank you so much, YEAH, I finally have an answer!!!
Thank you for the tip about the pin and loving my calendar! Hope you give it a try for your every day inspiration!
When I was in high school, girls wearing plaid wool skirts that wrapped around was popular. They held them shut with one of those big pins. I think that's what they are from.
The pins have numbers on them, that is why I thought they were maybe for lockers.
Yes I totally remember those skirts and pins! I graduated HS in 1973😂❤
@kellyhoernig The pins with numbers on them are usually from laundries and military. According to my grandma, that was how they kept track of things.
A wonderful diary
Thank you and it was a great daily art practice to start my day!

Thank you so much Marion! Thrilled that this art practice has inspired you YEAH.
I will definitely do this. I have been painting a very long time. I have been looking for something new to do. This just might be it.

I love all of it but the sweet little rabbits did it for me! Beautiful journal!😊
Thank you so much. The salt and pepper rabbits still make me smile with their little handle, sweet faces and delicate flowers.

I started this week and I'm sooo happy! Already seeing my own style emerging! Thanks so much. Just what I needed!!
I love this so much, thank you for sharing and YEAH for seeing a style shift, that is amazing!
I love this idea! New to watercolor but maybe I’ll give it a try.
I'm so happy you were inspired. I think you will find it a great practice once you start one. Enjoy and welcome to watercolor!
The old pins look like the ones used for fastening terry diapers, before disposable ones were available
I believe they are laundry bag pins because they have numbers on them. Thanks for watching!
Clever concept to inspire…love this idea😊

Get idea and it sounds like fun, providing you have decent drawing skills.
You can always lay the items on your piece and trace around it. I do that a lot for the painting supplies and leaves.

I actually used a large bowl for mine but for the course, I found a great tool that already came with dividing lines which made it so much easier to create.
