I get that the joke is that John is slowly killig Cats on purpose but in the actual comics and cartoons John does try to get Garfield to eat more healthy but Garfrield always manages to either trick John or just steal the food he wants. Either way it does make it seem more disturbing that John might be using his ways to slowly kill Cats to get closer Liz.
