As a little girl, I truly wanted to be a ballerina. I don't know when or where I was introduced to seeing ballerinas. I used a white girl's points that were way to small, they both hurt and felt good on my feet...who knows what could have happened had my mom had the financial resources. I have love and respect for dancers of color who have and who will pursue and follow their heart and dream!!!!!! 🎉🎊🎈💝🎁

Do it! I started at 47 and it's hard, but I love it. I've been dancing for almost five years now. This year I'm in the studio 6 days a week and I love it more every day. I wouldn't say I had a tone of discipline at first, but it built up over time and it's still growing. Start where you are; do what you can and as soon as you can, do more! All the best!

I wanted to be a ballerina and a model. I was scouted by someone who worked in a agency who wanted me to go to New York. But my body was coming in and it was becoming fuller and I was so heart broken. I felt like I needed to eat less and I still felt like I wouldn't be good enough, never thin enough and I wouldn't make it. Out of 300 girls that were suppose to go in and only around 8 would get selected and how was I gonna be one of those that get picked when I was starting to get a womans body at 14. I never went for it. The thought of going all the way to new york to get rejected would of broken me.
Art is a reflection of human culture and sensibility. The norms and strictures are and can be defined by the consensus of the culture. It's not wrong, nor is it right. It just is. I do believe, however, that as moral creatures, our highest allegiance should be to our fellow man and not the traditional strictures of an artform. Art, ideally, should serve human beings and not the other way around. Art, ideally, should be a means to elevate the soul of human beings. I am convinced that elevation often involves rethinking traditional strictures. Isn't that what makes art a "living" human expression as opposed to a superficial shell, restricting the growth of humanity? I do recognize that there are those for whom the "shell" is all there is and all there needs to be. Aren't they then like "reproductionists" who look to perfectly reproduce only what has been already done. Even though it's level of refinement may be exceedingly high, how humanly authentic or genuine can it be if it ignores the reality of life in the present?
@Kelvin Higgs I hear you. Traditions are made to serve people, not people to serve traditions. There are no absolutes in art, IMO. Everything worth doing is open to re-evaluation to see if it serves the needs of those it's supposed to serve. You're right, tradition shouldn't be abandoned simply because it has existed for a long time. It's long existence is usually evidence of it's integrity, but humanity has always been in some mode of transformation and traditions will change along with society or they will manifest as an impediment to that change. In the end it won't serve the longevity of the artform to reject change. But it's a big world and there's enough room for traditionalists and for reformers.
I'm not black or a poc but I've always thought that black people looks the most beautiful and elegant they always give me that vibe, I love ballet but I was so sad that I never saw black dancers, and when I found you o understand why, they're are afraid that people would see that black people look far more elegant and gorgeous than any other white girl. I started doing Latin dance salsa and Bachata, which add it to Ruth is an Afro dance. However, you barely see a black women where I am doing it it’s very bizarre how we are pushed out all spaces even spaces that at its roots evolved from our ancestors
I just can’t relate to this as a FBA whose met Caribbean and African from Europe they stress without being asked that they are English or French or European without a hyphen and that there’s is little to no racism in their countries . This is not a few but everyone last one . So I’m just watching convient racism and European taking advantage of the hard work and sacrifice of FBA in America instead of fixing their country of origin so they can stay there and flourish .
I'M WELL OVER SIXTY, Black, and I would still take a ballet class. In the early sixties, they said who ever heard of a black ballet dancer! Although the teacher said how very good I was, it took only one negative statement to take me out of class!! If you love ballet you just keep dancing! She was in France or some other country. In NYC there is the DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM.... BLACK BALLERINAS. There are other black ballet companies in the USA. Just like opera. But she was in Europe.

Toe shoes are NOT specifically designed to match your skin tone. No ballerina has ever had shiny pink skin. Pink satin was the color of theatrical costume dancing shoes in the 1700-1800's when ballet evolved. Pink was feminine; the men usually had white satin, although some famous ballerinas are painted as having white satin shoes. There was a popular film about a pair of RED pointe shoes, though strangely the ballerina did not have bright cherry skin. But this harmful narrative that pink shoes mean you are being discriminated against is born of grievance and not of fact.
If it isn't your culture try not to wear it and represent yourself. Since a lot of pain and strength comes from these outfits! Especially since a lot of cultural dances (even if world wide like ballet) are rejected racially in the United States and other places where whiteness is glorified. So understanding the struggle of other cultures is important when trying to just join their dances because you like them

I'm glad Marie-Astrid found a place at Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre and then at the Phoenix Dance Theater. The French dance companies really lost out.

I wanted to be a ballerina and a model. I was scouted by someone who worked in a agency who wanted me to go to New York. But my body was coming in and it was becoming fuller and I was so heart broken. I felt like I needed to eat less and I still felt like I wouldn't be good enough, never thin enough and I wouldn't make it. Out of 300 girls that were suppose to go in and only around 8 would get selected and how was I gonna be one of those that get picked when I was starting to get a womans body at 14. I never went for it. The thought of going all the way to new york to get rejected would of broken me.

Art is a reflection of human culture and sensibility. The norms and strictures are and can be defined by the consensus of the culture. It's not wrong, nor is it right. It just is. I do believe, however, that as moral creatures, our highest allegiance should be to our fellow man and not the traditional strictures of an artform. Art, ideally, should serve human beings and not the other way around. Art, ideally, should be a means to elevate the soul of human beings. I am convinced that elevation often involves rethinking traditional strictures. Isn't that what makes art a "living" human expression as opposed to a superficial shell, restricting the growth of humanity? I do recognize that there are those for whom the "shell" is all there is and all there needs to be. Aren't they then like "reproductionists" who look to perfectly reproduce only what has been already done. Even though it's level of refinement may be exceedingly high, how humanly authentic or genuine can it be if it ignores the reality of life in the present?
@Kelvin Higgs I hear you. Traditions are made to serve people, not people to serve traditions. There are no absolutes in art, IMO. Everything worth doing is open to re-evaluation to see if it serves the needs of those it's supposed to serve. You're right, tradition shouldn't be abandoned simply because it has existed for a long time. It's long existence is usually evidence of it's integrity, but humanity has always been in some mode of transformation and traditions will change along with society or they will manifest as an impediment to that change. In the end it won't serve the longevity of the artform to reject change. But it's a big world and there's enough room for traditionalists and for reformers.
I'm not black or a poc but I've always thought that black people looks the most beautiful and elegant they always give me that vibe, I love ballet but I was so sad that I never saw black dancers, and when I found you o understand why, they're are afraid that people would see that black people look far more elegant and gorgeous than any other white girl. I started doing Latin dance salsa and Bachata, which add it to Ruth is an Afro dance. However, you barely see a black women where I am doing it it’s very bizarre how we are pushed out all spaces even spaces that at its roots evolved from our ancestors

I just can’t relate to this as a FBA whose met Caribbean and African from Europe they stress without being asked that they are English or French or European without a hyphen and that there’s is little to no racism in their countries . This is not a few but everyone last one . So I’m just watching convient racism and European taking advantage of the hard work and sacrifice of FBA in America instead of fixing their country of origin so they can stay there and flourish .

Although the teacher said how very good I was, it took only one negative statement to take me out of class!! If you love ballet you just keep dancing! How sad, how ironic that in decades gone by-the 1920s to mid 20th century, the black Americans (Josephine Baker and James Baldwin to name a few famous one), ran to France to escape Racism and prejudice meted out by the dominant ones of that land. Toe shoes are NOT specifically designed to match your skin tone. No ballerina has ever had shiny pink skin. Pink satin was the color of theatrical costume dancing shoes in the 1700-1800's when ballet evolved. Pink was feminine; the men usually had white satin, although some famous ballerinas are painted as having white satin shoes. There was a popular film about a pair of RED pointe shoes, though strangely the ballerina did not have bright cherry skin. But this harmful narrative that pink shoes mean you are being discriminated against is born of grievance and not of fact.

If it isn't your culture try not to wear it and represent yourself. Since a lot of pain and strength comes from these outfits! Especially since a lot of cultural dances (even if world wide like ballet) are rejected racially in the United States and other places where whiteness is glorified. So understanding the struggle of other cultures is important when trying to just join their dances because you like them
