That's because this game was far more fair than Getting Over It. It was REALLY hard to fall beyond your last "safe" area, and pretty much impossible to fall past more than one previous safe area. So it was really more like several mini games that you had to master, but with no worries about having to do all the old stuff over again every time you failed in trying to do the next one.
To those that just so happen to be checking the comments right now, 14 hours ago, Mark tweeted "It is done." Very cryptic, most likely in regards to Iron Lung. Probably getting an update/apology video in the coming days explaining why hes been gone for a month.
Getting over it was anger at the game. Now mark has finally evolved past outward rage bursts… into bottled internal frustration against himself. The lack of chair throwing is compensated by the fact that Marks blood veins could pop at any moment. It makes the rare anger moments more satisfying!
Getting over it was a insanely high climb with small checkpoints that are very fall off able to the beginning its literally physics based in this game you had hands to control where you go and its a small map with huge and small checkpoints.
You know what i appreciate about Lixian so much? He doesn't over-edit at all. The pacing of cuts fits Mark so perfectly and the emphasys of certain phrases and words with echoes or other effects are also chosen just enough to where it's neither too much, nor to little. Perfectly balanced, like all things should be. Love your content, keep it up❤ (and that's to both Lixian and Mark)
@@chere100 I don't know that it's explicitly stated anywhere, but my guess is one person finds the good bits and trims the video, next person... I dunno... places Mark's face where it needs to be? Trying to figure out what else there is to do. And then Lixian probably just does effects and his little avatar. OR. Maybe they just take turns?
Ya’know, I don’t really think about it much with these rage games, but Mark is exercising several times the motor control and multitasking of an average person while playing these games and is actually incredibly skilled. How many people can hold what’s basically a one sided conversation interesting enough to hold millions of peoples attention while also planning several steps ahead during a incredibly difficult game that requires precise hand control and near perfect timing, all with the threat of potentially losing hours of progress looming over them? Not many, I’d assume.
And not just a one sided conversation, but a comedy act as well. he's not just thinking ahead in the game, but all the way to the editing of the video. he sets up bits for lixian and plans out jokes to execute later on he is insane fr
18:00 this is actually a documented phenomenon. When you first start something, you have no expectations about how things should be done, so you just do your best and when you mess up, all you think is, "well of course; I only just started." But after you've been doing it for a while, your brain builds up all these expectations that end up actually making you worse. I've found that the best way to combat this is to just take a 5-10 min break when you start to notice the quality of attempts start to go down. When you come back from that break, you will be noticeably better because you've lost that "muscle memory fatigue"
Big big agree, but also wanted to add that the 5 - 10 min break might sometimes need to extend to a few days, or even a few weeks while you consistently try again and again. I have friends who were stuck in ruts for a few years, even. Learning is not linear, but you will definitely learn as long as you continue trying!
Mark there's actually a saying (although it's usually used in darksouls style games, but it can be applied to broader things) that your two best attempts at beating a boss will be your first and last attempts. This is because (Forgive me if I mess up parts) in your first attempt you're giving it you're best without any idea what you're facing and as such aren't usually as nervous, every attempt after that is learning and it's normal to do worse and and worse and then get a little better, then a little worse over and over until finally, on your last attempt you win. You seem to embody this concept on a subconscious level.
It happens mostly because of impatience. You know you can do it, and you know what you are supposed to do, but you try to do it faster every next time, because in your mind it looks like you already obtained skills important to beat the challenge, but that's actually not true. The first attempt is the best, because you act instinctively. You don't strategize, you don't learn, you only use your already learned set of skills, but you still fail. Because it was close, you get overconfident and stop trying as hard, but someone in a hurry to progress doesn't realize that and fail even more. The cause might be ADHD, but can also be just a character trait. Advice? When you fail too much, go do something else instead and calm down. It always helps and refreshes your point of view.
@@korekdorek I believe what you brought up is also the basis behind beginner's luck, the first time you try something you don't think as much about it because you're just trying it out and don't anticipate getting very far, and then every time after that you start to overthink things when trying to anticipate how to do better or what you did to do well the first time (not realizing that thought tends to impede instinct.)
@@korekdorek This is pretty much it with Mark. I vibe with it on a spiritual level, so I see it in all of the games he plays, because I embody that same lack of patience myself in games. When you play a game that allows you to fail at something and just keep doing it over and over and over, for every new fail, and retry, you create and get into a rhythm. You get faster and faster and faster, but that doesn't mean you get any better. In fact, you often put yourself into a rhythm of failure, because what the task NEEDS is for you to slow down, time your actions, but you've created a habit of failure, and you keep repeating the same thing that keeps causing you to fail. Crash bandicoot is a perfect game that embodies this phenomenon, because everything in its level design is catered in a way that allows you to basically run through the entire level, without ever letting go of the forward button. If you are able to practice a rhythm of success, you'll beat every level first try, insanely quickly (100% the first game just with your morning coffee). However, the slightest misstep, or delay in action, will offset the timing of alllll of the platforming aspects of the level and you will start missing every jump. If you get into the rhythm of that failure, you'll miss the same jump over and over and over, when all you have to do to regain your composure is to just wait for the timing to sync back up again, but we don't wait. We never let go of the forward button.
Mark, the concept of beginners luck is very real, except it has nothing to do with luck. When you are doing something blind, you're relying on instinct. In those instances, you either just go with the flow, or choke due to panic of the unknown. When you return to a familiar experience, you're now trying to use past experience as well as react to it, so your brain is working on more things to process. You start hyper analyzing all your movements, the positions of things, try to recall what went wrong with the last attempt while focusing on the present, and psyche yourself out.
so what's the best way to go with it? after suceeding something on first try perfectly but failing repeatedly after? i suffer the exact same problem as mark
@@bald_lightningIt's actually kind of incredible when you consider it's a survival instinct, we aren't this way because our brains are made for silly video games. In nature if you fuck something up the first time there's a good chance you're dead. You're not gonna get several attempts to dodge a wolf lunging at you.
@tombick9311 definitely not a flaw. Doing things better the first time is always good for you, especially if you never return to the task again. If you DO return to a task, with repeated practice you will eventually surpass any ability you had initially.
ok to those who are wondering where mark is- it is likely he is finishing out iron lung. i’m sure somewhere he has posted something about it or plans to
Seriously. I just beat the game recently myself. Mark made those moments SO much harder for himself, but... he got it to work for him, so who can complain really haha
@@kyozou66I did beat this game too. It's more about mastering those one hand jumps. Two hands jumps are more random imo, so you often go all over the place.
You know, this is a good game. It doesn't need to be endlessly frustrating and have the controls fighting you all the time. This just seems like a nice challenge.
Trust me, it is not a NICE challenge. Mark was very strangely good at this game. Like seriously he fucking powered through it. I'd say this game is definitely harder than Getting Over It. Because in GOI the game's easy once you've properly learnt the controls. But for this game, the controls are so simple that most people get the hang of it within the first half-hour. It kinda sucks we didn't see how long it took Mark to finish the game but it took me 9 hrs and holy fuck was it incredibly frustrating at times. If you like foddy-type games then 100% give it a shot on your own but don't expect an easy challenge.
@@bigboycreams4769 true i sucked because of the simple ass controls also i blame my computer and the game for lagging at the WATERFALL SECTION. (optimization problem)
The whole slippery walls mechanic is so nice for real. You clearly can tell what you can safely grab onto. But u can still grab slippery walls, you will slidedown but you can use em to grab some lower platforms to not fall superdown. Also the game has safety nets in form of pools
Can we just appreciate for a moment that mark saw a skip he was so sure was possible but just couldnt figure out the trick to get that little bit of hight but now, he did it on pretty much the first try
I saw a post somewhere explaining the "best try is the first try" phenomenon somewhere once. It really is just psychology. In the first try the focus is purely to see how far one can go and to do the best at every little step, with no pressure at all. But during subsequent tries we have the added pressure where we expect ourselves to do at least as good as the first try, or even better since we should have learnt something. This comparison that is often inflated by intense self-criticism means the middle tries when we are learning something new feel the most frustrated. It is eventually when one learns enough that a try with the added pressure goes as good as the first try will one progress past the first try.
Well put! Like others I recently learned about this phenomenon from AstralSpiff's Peaks Of Yore playthrough where he talks about this for several minutes and talks about basically the same concept, and one quote from that that stuck with me is the statement that "your best attempts at anything will be your first, and then your last". The first is free of pressure and full of creativity and freedom, and the last will be the attempt where you have spent many hours after the failed first attempt learning, and finally succeed in what you set out to do for the first time. Your first will be the attempt where you're most free and unburdened, and often get the furthest off of pure flow alone, whereas the last will be the attempt where you've spent so much time practicing that you've got it down to a science and don't need that flow to get through it anymore.
18:00 My theory about this "phenomenon" : At the beginning, you are fresh, focus and without any pent-up frustration. But the game is difficult and comes a moment (which happens to everyone) when you lose a bit of focus, you're getting more tense, less precise etc. And when that moment comes, you're entering a 'feedback loop' where this frustration feeds your lack of confidence and you start getting more and more frustrated towards the game and yourself, which in return makes you do more mistakes, and so on. Solution: you have to accept that there will always be a moment during the session where you'll get less good, and that is perfectly normal. I feel exactly the same when I play this type of game.
100% agree. Another way to look at it is that during initial attempts our brain adapts to how to do well, and remembers it. But then failure inevitably kicks in because you can't always win and there are too many unknowns in just about anything. When that happens our brain "starts over" and tries to find new ways to win, while ignoring the initial learning (and maybe that initial learning was more correct). After too many attempts our brains end up not having a solid working strategy. TLDR - repeating something over and over again where the results can vary creates this frustration, because we can't seem to learn anything properly.
that's why you should stop playing or something while that frustration is there, then recharge yourself and get the focus back to push through or...be so frustrated that you just do it flawlessly to spite the game or yourself
I don't know if y'all played this particular game, but actually the more you play it, the hand fatigue increases badly. I was consistent at first, but the longer i played it, it was much harder bc of that hand fatigue. I did a rest and completed game easily.
which is why when a game frustrates me or irritates me, the moment that i slam something or smack something out of anger is the moment that i move onto doing something else.
We probably haven’t gotten any recent videos because the premiere for iron lung was shown. The movie is probably finished, and he showed it to his family and friends. That’s why he hasn’t made any more videos, he’s still busy. He’ll come back to yt videos probably in a few weeks.
@@Helldiver148it should eventually I have a specific grudge against this bot in particular cause of his videos they seem like normal Christian songs but he slips gore into them, its disgusting and disgraceful
That phenomenon of your first attempt being the best and the reat of the video being you trying to achieve that again is a real thing. AstralSpiff talked about it in a Peaks of Yor stream - the first and last attempts will always be your best. That struggle point in the middle is when you are trying and experimenting with everything. Its the learning period where you constantly take in information, consciously and unconsciously Those super powerful attempts are your brain applying everything you've learned. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just gives more learning data at another point. The point being: this struggle is a normal thing and you are making progress even when it feels like crap
And it feels exactly like how he describes it. One starts to go "wait, why didn't X work?" "but i did the literal exact same thing and it worked before!" and legit start to wonder if the game is just breaking. We just speedrun through a part, die and suddenly absolutely nothing we do, despite us dong the exact same things, work.
I don't know if you played this climbing game, but in this one the hand fatigue increases if you play for a longer time. So it might explain why you're consistent at first and then you're getting worse.
Same; Dark Souls taught me this a few times. it is that having confidence informs your perceived ability: you can access your skill intuitively, that's flow state. having that confidence challenged connectedly lowers perceived ability and softlocks the flow state from you. it's the knowing that there CAN be a skill issue... that fosters the skill issue. assure yourself you had, have, and will restore the ability and that percentage goes up until you're practically back in the flow state again, it is wild how well I found that works; realize that you can make it until you make it for real.
in Getting over it, one of the first things Bennant tells you is “Starting over is harder than starting up” And he wasn’t wrong even watching this playthrough unfold it rung true. The old mark if it hadn’t been for his experience with rage games like Getting over it, probably would have taken significantly longer to finish this game. He even came to this game mentality prepared for what he was going to do.And yes he stilled struggled, but even he knew most of his mistakes was his own. And that’s development if I’ve ever seen one, congrats Mark
@@mentaya11 I keep seeing people parrot this, and I'm just not sure where this misconception comes from. At this point, I feel the need to say it: Getting Over It's controls are 100% consistent. There is absolutely no point where your hammer "has a mind of its own". If your hammer moved, that means your mouse moved. If you or your hammer slipped, that means you didn't have a good enough grip on the surface or moved too suddenly. That's where it begins and ends. Source: Somebody who has beaten Getting Over It more than a few times, with no such issues as "inconsistent controls".
@@sirjames6870 Well, I've never played it. I don't claim to be an expert, and the fact that I've seen speedrunners play through it quickly lends credence to your words. That said, I've seen people play it enough that I trust that the jenky, poorly *something* nature of the controls is a thing. Maybe consistency isn't the right word, but the obnoxious nature of the game certainly seems to stem from a lot more than repetitive climbing and falling, and part of that seems to be the way the controls play.
Me: comes here to look at comments because Mark has been inactive for 3 weeks The comments: "Yo I saw your DING DONG filter on Tik Tok" What the actual fuck?
I love how much more this game seems to actully give the player control. I remember a video of Getting Over It, where the player got themselves up to a decent high point, then took thier hands off the keyboard and mouse, even pointing the face cam at the mouse and keyboard, and the player in game moves without *any* input, what so ever, that game is made to be unfair as hell, this one is just. so much better
Yea but this was just a setting issue. In certain curser positons it would move, this was suposed to be a bit of help in certain movements. Well it actually didn't at all. xD Anyway, you could disable it. (I think it was even disabled as standard setting, but dunno after all those updates)
tbh getting over it's controls are fine to me. I had issues completing the game the first time but after i beat it and got the hang of it theres a method to the madness for sure
That kinda reminds me of how the developer of Fruit Ninja confirmed that he intentionally overlapped bombs and fruits sometimes, created unfair situations, specifically so that the player could place some of the blame on the game, instead of themselves.
The best part of that is that by saying Matt was protecting us, he is admitting he is a negative force on us, which fits with how little he actually pays attention and gets right.
13:11 what I would give to see mark absolutely blazing through the starting areas now after he had so much trouble with them initially. I think that would be a great video
Anyone who’s worried… I get it, this channel means a lot to a lot of people, me included. But a new distractible dropped yesterday, so I hope/think that means the dudes fine and that he’s probably just having a lil break from YT or building up another catalogue of videos for everyone or just working on finishing Iron Lung. Everyone chill, it’s what he’d want.
I don't get why people keep making posts like this. Its completely outside of what we're doing. Asking for an update on Twitter once a month after suddenly dropping out of contact completely is hardly over-reacting.
Mark doing it the hard way and trying to throw and grab the rock down below instead of the easy way of sliding down the ice and grabbing it is a metaphor for life
Honestly, I feel like the difficulty of this game is just right. Like, it's challenging and difficult. But it feels fair, and it's not so difficult to the point where you don't feel like you want to complete it. There are a lot of nice breakpoints and the level design is very generous. Like the fact that you can't really backtrack during extremely hard sections or that there are even safety nets to save you from falling too far. But it's still difficult and feel very rewarding when you finally reach the top.
21:43 the long shadows on the arms are actually accurate. The dev made them longer to make the climbing mechanics work. He does a video where he shows what climbing looks from the side perspective and it’s wild! From rear perspective it looks totally normal. It’s only noticeable in some shadows.
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 in 3d side perspective you see that the arms are stretched horizontally so that they actually touch the surfaces they're grabbing
Honestly, this game is too easy, I could do a better job purely on design after watching this video. Mainly it would be putting areas where you fall in places where he grabs often, the player has to have the fear of losing everything in the back of their mind; a good game like this would ensure at least one experience where the player loses a devastating amount of progress. Of course, you couldn't make it too unforgiving since then people would lose interest, so it should tease the player with moments of progress. If this sporadic placement of rewards is done correctly you can get people into a state like Mark was in getting over it, where the memory of progress motivates them to continue playing even though it causes them grief. You have to weaponize the sunken cost fallacy to really inflict psychological torment on players. If you do this correctly you can get most players to spend like 8-9 hours in frustration before they quit; with every download you can feel the hours of human life that your game is stealing from the world.
Oh Markimoo how I miss the sound of your voice. Every day without you is like a day without the sun. Your soothing words, once ever present, are now so distant Has the Iron Lung claimed you, has the ocean claimed yet another resident? Until you return I shall await you, my sunshine, my beautiful
19:15 Mark accidentally stumbles upon the correct solution to the part he's struggling with (controlled sliding) and proceeds to ignore it. Never change, Mark.
I love the calm at the beginning of each video where he just seems so reasonable and patient and like he’s just gonna be able to brush it all off with a chuckle and a joke. Then I skip to about halfway through and he is screaming in fits of rage
That phenomenon is totally relatable. It’s walking that tightrope between the steely grit of hyper focus and the slippery slope of concentration degradation.
in the words of AstralSpiff; "There's a strange concept that I first heard from the Dark-Souls community that's always stayed with me. "Your two best attempts against a boss will be your first try, and the one where you beat the boss." Meaning that after losing the first time you'll go on a streak of attempts where you do worse. Until eventually you win. Now, Immediately this makes no sense because you'd think that your first try would be the least successful, then it only goes uphill from there. But that isn't the case. Something about seeing it for the first time makes you go on this fairly good run, just not good enough. Then you settle into the learning phase, where performance gets a lot worse but you're actually figuring things out, not just winging it. Right away it can feel like you're getting worse but keep going and eventually, you surpass your first attempt with a full understanding of what's going on, and win." He's using Dark-Souls as an example, but when he said this he was also playing a climbing game "Peaks of Yore".
I feel like this might be exacerbated with ADHD, at least in Mark's case. I haven't really noticed this in myself, but I do know ADHD makes me overthink a lot. Combine that with this, and it's a plausible explanation as to why Mark says this happens to him often. Or maybe I'm overthinking it. Who knows.
That does make a lot of sense. The first try is the rough draft. Then, you learn to edit what you did (which can be a slow process) so you can be better for the final draft.
Been playing a lot of cup head recently, and I personally felt this. First attempt of any boss and I was able to make it past half way (except that robot guy) and every other attempt is just instant death
Hi there, psychology nerd here. I can explain two things that are going on here. 1) The reason Mark can do something first try but then screw it up later is because the first time you do something, you aren't thinking as hard about it. You have less information about exactly what goes into it and the exact nuances of trying to make it happen, and so the lack of information actually helps you get through it easier by not trying to cater to all the little details and instead just gunning it and doing what you know will work. That's why "beginners luck" is a thing. Less info, less to think about, more instinctive action. 2) The reason that the jump at the top of the climb feels harder, despite technically being easier, is because subconsciously it feels more consequential. Mark may fail the jump at the bottom of the iceberg over and over, but since it takes less than ten seconds to get back, it feels easier because there's less strain to succeed at it. when he climbs around and to the top though, he's now spent about 3 minutes climbing back up and the pressure to not choke makes the jump seem much harder than it really is. These two phenomena also explain why you could struggle with something endlessly the first time through, but then immediately breeze through it on subsequent tries. Whether its gaming, cooking, reading a book, hiking a trail, or any other number of things. Once you get past a difficult task once (i.e. beating Getting Over It), it becomes much less strenuous because the pressure of wanting to not fail is mostly gone. you're now doing it for fun instead of for achievement
17:48 mark has got what I like to call, “the curse of beginners luck” where you just quickly figure out how to do something and can nail it first try easy peezy Which feels so great until you realize very quickly that CANT DO IT AGAIN. Your brain is smart enough to figure it out right away and because it’s the first try there’s no hesitation, cause who cares if you fail the first try?! BUT then you DO get it and end up messing up every time after cause normally you won’t get it until you’ve worked for it, but you’ve already tasted freedom and it becomes an obsession. Driving you crazy because YOU DID GET IT, you know it’s possible, but now you have to rework everything you thought you knew in order to succeed again. It’s MADDENING
I am not 100% sure but i think this series was pre-recorded before his break so that he could still post content, but not actually need to dedicate time to a game. It was said in the last video he did before this series "Im tired". I think he mentioned he had a bunch of stuff that had been pre-recorded to post while he relaxed.
@@feralmagick7177idk that doesn’t really explain why this one took like 4-5 extra days to come out while the others were 3 days apart. He also said at around 0:50 that he took “days to collect himself” so idk about prerecorded

That was so much better that get over it, the design for those little save points, was clever, like the rocks to grab to stop you falling all the way down. That’s some good level design.
At the time just before and during a throw, expectations skyrocket, and you experience a burst of adrenaline. One of the effects of a sudden burst of adrenaline is feeling as if time is slowing, but you aren’t moving slower. The game isn’t randomly changing the mouse sensitivity. You’re moving faster in those moments than you think you are.
Mark it's been 3 weeks and were all worried about you, I hope you're okay from the bottom of my heart you have gotten me through my entire life practically even when I was being abused at my childhood home, if you're not okay, your fans are here for you just like you were here for us

My favourite thing about this series is watching how perfectly it demonstrates that overconfidence and cutting corners is just as damaging as anxiety and doubting yourself
Another great streamer/RUclipsr explained something on another climbing game (Peaks of Yore) that might help you with this game. The dark souls community has a chart. It shows the progress you make in each repetition. The attempts that you make the most progress on (your two best attempts) are your first and your last. Everything in between will be a slow slope upward after a major drop off. So keep in mind that that applies to every jumping this game. Your first and last attempt will be your best, try to be patient with each rep in between.

The feeling where you see the glass a millisecond too late, with too much momentum to stop, you walk straight into knowing exactly what happened but still question the universe why? Every mess up in this game
If the crown is what made it so you could grab the clouds then I wonder if it unlocks a new path. I'm now asking a few questions. "Is this a rogue lite?" "What other powers will we get?" Here are some ideas that come to mind: A large vertical launch by holding and releasing the spacebar when in water. Slow fall, using grip when you have nothing to grip. Climb everything other than the open sky without slipping. Glider, used by gripping with both hands in open air.
Witnessing this whole playthrough unfold, make me realize that this represents life and experience itself. Mark start out bad, but everyone has to start somewhere, even at the bottom of the barrel. With enough struggle, Mark managed past the first big giant huge massive "Struggle Wall" (i.e. rage quits). On the third episode (I believe), he starts practicing before recording, "Practice make perfect," and that truly show his perseverance and tenacity on by reaching this point. But if you believe in the video game logic, there is a thing past 100% completion, there is something higher than "perfect", and that is consistency. And to be honest, that phrase feels incomplete. It should be, "Practice make perfect, but perfect alone won't make consistent. Practice consistently to become consistently perfect" or something along those lines. I'm also appreciated the dev to have "soft checkpoint", being able to fail, and retry that section, that jump, that hurdle, without going back to square 1, mean I can fail more often at that section, so I can be better at that section, and then be consistent at that section. Impressive, really, a simple checkpoint/rest area can do a wonder.
I have heard a more revamped version of the quote that says "Practice makes progress" which helps remove the unachievable goal of striving for perfection, but still assures that you will always get better if you practice.
Theres a quote from one of my professors that is a bit similar, "Practice makes perfect, but perfect practice makes perfect, better." What I would get from this in school is to try your best when practicing and hold yourself to high standards until you're satisfied but never forget that anything you do is still practice and you always have a chance to learn something new, and once you do, you'll come to realize your best is now exponentially better.
Seeing Markiplier actually compliment the game design instead of cursing out everyone involved in it is great character development
Because you have more control in this game, unlike getting over it
It's sarcasm bro 😂
That's because this game was far more fair than Getting Over It. It was REALLY hard to fall beyond your last "safe" area, and pretty much impossible to fall past more than one previous safe area. So it was really more like several mini games that you had to master, but with no worries about having to do all the old stuff over again every time you failed in trying to do the next one.
Because it genuinely is good game design with clever safety holds and practice areas for skills to develop for the following areas
not really, it's moreso a sign of how badly the game was made (atleast if you're judging it based off of what it's trying to be)

This applies to the concept of beginner's luck
This is what messes me up when I start a new assasin creed game after getting use to whatever I played last
Big big agree, but also wanted to add that the 5 - 10 min break might sometimes need to extend to a few days, or even a few weeks while you consistently try again and again.

Or maybe his fingers are hurting from holding the mouse alot
It happens all the time
@@korekdorek I believe what you brought up is also the basis behind beginner's luck, the first time you try something you don't think as much about it because you're just trying it out and don't anticipate getting very far, and then every time after that you start to overthink things when trying to anticipate how to do better or what you did to do well the first time (not realizing that thought tends to impede instinct.)
And now with correct grammar.

@tombick9311 definitely not a flaw. Doing things better the first time is always good for you, especially if you never return to the task again. If you DO return to a task, with repeated practice you will eventually surpass any ability you had initially.

Soooo... "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again?"
@@ItsFreakinHarding. basically, yeah. There isnt much one can do about the pressure afterall
Thank you for this!

Same goes with life in general. Just embrace. Very good theory. 👍
TLDR - repeating something over and over again where the results can vary creates this frustration, because we can't seem to learn anything properly.
that's why you should stop playing or something while that frustration is there, then recharge yourself and get the focus back to push through
or...be so frustrated that you just do it flawlessly to spite the game or yourself

Its the learning period where you constantly take in information, consciously and unconsciously
Those super powerful attempts are your brain applying everything you've learned. Sometimes it works, sometimes it just gives more learning data at another point. The point being: this struggle is a normal thing and you are making progress even when it feels like crap
Sooooo basically... "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again?"

Markiplier: I'm tired. Therefore I'm going to continually play the hardest and most tedious and time consuming game ever.
Truly Mark's pattern of "Perfect first try and completely flubbing every following attempt" truly induces despair
Mark, I know the feeling of the "Its not a bit" I OFTEN play a game or a boss fight, get near the end and die... try again and i barely get past 10%
And it feels exactly like how he describes it.
One starts to go "wait, why didn't X work?" "but i did the literal exact same thing and it worked before!" and legit start to wonder if the game is just breaking. We just speedrun through a part, die and suddenly absolutely nothing we do, despite us dong the exact same things, work.
it because in one growing frustration is always growing impatience to get back and try again, so one starts to get sloppy
I don't know if you played this climbing game, but in this one the hand fatigue increases if you play for a longer time. So it might explain why you're consistent at first and then you're getting worse.
Same; Dark Souls taught me this a few times.
it is that having confidence informs your perceived ability: you can access your skill intuitively, that's flow state.
having that confidence challenged connectedly lowers perceived ability and softlocks the flow state from you.
it's the knowing that there CAN be a skill issue... that fosters the skill issue.
assure yourself you had, have, and will restore the ability and that percentage goes up until you're practically back in the flow state again, it is wild how well I found that works; realize that you can make it until you make it for real.
in Getting over it, one of the first things Bennant tells you is
“Starting over is harder than starting up”
And he wasn’t wrong even watching this playthrough unfold it rung true.
The old mark if it hadn’t been for his experience with rage games like Getting over it, probably would have taken significantly longer to finish this game.

And that’s development if I’ve ever seen one, congrats Mark

Tbf though, unlike getting over it, most of the mistakes *were* his here, since the controls actually played consistently.

@@mentaya11 I keep seeing people parrot this, and I'm just not sure where this misconception comes from. At this point, I feel the need to say it:
Getting Over It's controls are 100% consistent.

Getting over it doesn’t move at all without input afaik, give source.
Yea but this was just a setting issue. In certain curser positons it would move, this was suposed to be a bit of help in certain movements. Well it actually didn't at all. xD
Anyway, you could disable it.
This one is definitely a better "game", but Getting Over It wasn't really trying to be an enjoyable game

Hey pal, you commented twice on this video. You alright? You need attention? Because i got u :)

Congratulations on finishing Iron lung
Hi
1:59
Mark: "Is that a grab?"
Climber: "Yup!"
Mark: "I don't trust it."
Lol 😂😂
That phenomenon is totally relatable. It’s walking that tightrope between the steely grit of hyper focus and the slippery slope of concentration degradation.
in the words of AstralSpiff;
"There's a strange concept that I first heard from the Dark-Souls community that's always stayed with me.
"Your two best attempts against a boss will be your first try, and the one where you beat the boss."
Meaning that after losing the first time you'll go on a streak of attempts where you do worse. Until eventually you win.
Now, Immediately this makes no sense because you'd think that your first try would be the least successful, then it only goes uphill from there. But that isn't the case.
Something about seeing it for the first time makes you go on this fairly good run, just not good enough. Then you settle into the learning phase, where performance
gets a lot worse but you're actually figuring things out, not just winging it.
Right away it can feel like you're getting worse but keep going and eventually, you surpass your first attempt with a full understanding of what's going on, and win."
He's using Dark-Souls as an example, but when he said this he was also playing a climbing game "Peaks of Yore".
That's interesting, thanks for sharing :)
Who knows.
Well said.
I miss mark sm. I hope he’s doing okay and is enjoying his spare time to rest ❤️
Okay Spencer Reid!!!
@@Icedkaylatte wow...
@@YT_Tyty1308 …it was a joke. Spencer Reid is a highly intelligent character and this is something he’d say
@@Icedkaylatte the fact that you thought I was personal about it, you're good bro, that was funny XD
@@YT_Tyty1308 I thought you were!!! Aha that’s my fault. Sorry!!
1:40 mark “whatever gets me by is what matters” video game character “yeah”
17:48 mark has got what I like to call, “the curse of beginners luck” where you just quickly figure out how to do something and can nail it first try easy peezy
Which feels so great until you realize very quickly that CANT DO IT AGAIN.
Calm down dude!!!!!!
for the folks wondering where he is, he’s finishing up his movie iron lung - which by the way IS FINISHED HE ANNOUNCED TODAY ON TWITTER
YES! YES! He did it! I’m excited! I will do all I can to watch this movie, wherever it’s placed! This is exciting!
It’s funny how Mark is stressed and needs to take a break from overworking himself…
and he goes to play this game. Totally not a masochist. Yep.
17:10 it's like when a cat is clawed in the curtains or furniture and slowly rips down the fabric lmao
27:41 When you think you’re at the top but truly you were at the bottom.

he posts like twice a month now, I'm going through withdrawls

I feel the same man. I'm sure he's just busy with the movie stuff. It'll be worth the wait!
At least you aren't paying him an not getting content.
Mark is close to the finish of the movie guys. He dedicating everything he has now into it so please be easy on him. The movie itself is already enough stress jus show that we be supporting and loving him and it’ll be fantastic
That makes sense, I was worried about him tbh
He's still doing his podcasts that he has with his friends if anyone is suffering from Mark withdrawals
I just wish he'd post even a short video on here explaining why he won't be making videos for a while.
@@etherraichupretty sure he did, but you should know, even if he didnt, that helping with the production of what seems to be a multi million dollar movie, is stressful, especially when you have to tend to a youtube channel, and other real life needs, just be grateful he posted something, and that something was nice to watch.
@@BusinessTeapot Not on here, twitter or instagram. As for saying I should be grateful.. Thats just silly. Im always glad when Mark posts something. That hasn't changed. Im just also a bit disappointed too. He used to be so reliable, but now its hard to even get a brief update from him. Silence causes so many more problems on the internet than almost anything else.
Damn, this game made Mark enter the dark arc and become an anime villain in this thumbnail.
Anyone else missing Mark rn?
Why are there so many comments like this do something else 😭
4:42 when you slip so hard you turn into an owl
😂 I love it.
That was so much better that get over it, the design for those little save points, was clever, like the rocks to grab to stop you falling all the way down. That’s some good level design.
You don’t know jack
@@JohnKranskiI don’t either, who’s Jack?
0:23 is all I've watched and is the best part. DON'T QUESTION ME! The pitter pats all the way down is hands up the best part
Idk I think 17:10 is better
A much slower and agonizing fall but it's missing that pitter patter on the way down. Both enjoyable in their own right lol
Loling hard at the complete lack of leg action in this climbing. Even Spiderman would be jealous of that upper body strength.
4:43 “hey mark, what sound does an owl make?”
People like you are the reason I love checking timed comments
Lmao amazing 😂
At the time just before and during a throw, expectations skyrocket, and you experience a burst of adrenaline. One of the effects of a sudden burst of adrenaline is feeling as if time is slowing, but you aren’t moving slower.
The game isn’t randomly changing the mouse sensitivity. You’re moving faster in those moments than you think you are.

Y'all let the man work on his side projects or rest, he's been doing this for a decade, even if he enjoys it he gotta do sum else too
No one's trying to stop him. We just want any sort of update from him. its really not too much.
@@etherraichuBruv he doesn’t owe you guys an update. And depending on what is going on off camera it very well may be too much for him. Plus he’s allowed to have a personal life. It’s kinda insane to ask a stranger to give you a life update.
No one is getting antsy so get off the high horse princess, we where just simply asking if there was an update as Mark is usually good about informing others. Bro literally recorded from a hospital bed TWICE.
@@ReficulDrakul "No one is getting antsy", i think you underestimate how stupid some people are, know the ones around you before acting entitled. I know Mark has done that I'm not blind, if you're not being annoying about it then simply shut up and move on, because I'm not talking to you.

28:25 famous last words: basicly nothing to me
Wow, Mark actually beat the game in 5 episodes without any serious loss of progress. That's pretty good.
26:59 And there is the Bennett Foddy shoutout
Partway through episode 4, I started to see the rage that drives people to turn into werewolves. Glad to see he made it through.
@@Blasted2Oblivion And that's a CHOICE! NOT a curse!
The game is very forgiving with its checkpoints to be fair
The feeling where you see the glass a millisecond too late, with too much momentum to stop, you walk straight into knowing exactly what happened but still question the universe why?
Every mess up in this game
If the crown is what made it so you could grab the clouds then I wonder if it unlocks a new path. I'm now asking a few questions. "Is this a rogue lite?" "What other powers will we get?"
Here are some ideas that come to mind: A large vertical launch by holding and releasing the spacebar when in water. Slow fall, using grip when you have nothing to grip. Climb everything other than the open sky without slipping. Glider, used by gripping with both hands in open air.
Why hasn't Mark/Lixian been putting the classic outro music, I miss it!!
I miss the OG outro music ;_; Videos feel lonely without it...
My family used to say, "Perfect practice makes perfect."
@@ads1035 This is used in music a lot
Theres a quote from one of my professors that is a bit similar, "Practice makes perfect, but perfect practice makes perfect, better."
What I would get from this in school is to try your best when practicing and hold yourself to high standards until you're satisfied but never forget that anything you do is still practice and you always have a chance to learn something new, and once you do, you'll come to realize your best is now exponentially better.
