This tutorial is SUPER easy to follow. Thank you for making this. It is super hard to find a specific thing on the Internet. I am definitely subscribing!
I was searching for this exact problem on the sony webpage and not getting any answer, and you here solved it in 2 minutes. thanks! I had it on mass storage, and could with no problem download the pictures, but the videos where no where to be found.
Thanks for this useful video. Just wondering if the same approach applies for a HDR-XR200 Sony handycam? And my second question: i bought my handycam secondhand and it didn't come with a USB cable. Do you know where to get one? Thanks in advance.
I have the HDR-CX500 and mine didn't come with a cable either:/ this is all really new to me, do u mind sharing what cables u got in order to transfer your videos?
Totally didn't understand that. Normally you don't have to read instructions for simple things like this but with Sony you do and it's still not clear. Your explanation was clear, thank you. Wish I didn't buy this thing.
Got mine to download okay, but trying to figure out just how to delete the files. I have 4 files, as I just started operating this camera. When it is on my computer it allows me to copy or save, but I am still trying to figure out what I need to do to erase/delete these files now that I have saved them into my computer. With the camera hooked up, I can't seem to do that correctly on the computer. Any thoughts on that would be helpful. Nice video and helpful to me, as it worked like a charm.
Good question, I seem to be only able to delete files on the camera it-self , not sure if even with the "PlayMemories Home" its possible to do it on the computer.
Hi, I bought one of this Handycams and I am still learning to use it. I have a Problem: I recorded a one and a half Hour long video of one of my concerts, and when I look at it in the camera, it is complete as one video, but if I transfer it to the computer, I end up with 10 short videos. Is there any form to avoid it?
This is brilliant. I was stuck with the camera not showing up in Windows Explorer even after connecting it to the laptop with a USB cable. Setting the USB connection in the camcorder to MTP resolved it totally. Transferring the files to my laptop was then a simple copy and paste. Interestingly, the Sony Operating Guide does not give this simple, wired connection method. Instead it gives instructions on transferring files wirelessly by wi-fi, which did not work for me, and which also requires downloading proprietary Sony software, Playmemories.
I have videos recorded. I can watch them on my camcorder. Windows won't play them on my PC. I can't get them into my editor. Any ideas to solve my problems? Thank you.
Tested it with a Sony Handycam FDR-AX53. Ultimately there are some tradeoffs when using MTP. Unless you have a camera with USB Type C and an absurdly fast cable(5 Gbps to 10 Gbps), it's not as fast as transferring directly from the SD Card(especially a USB 3.0 or higher card reader). All of the photos and videos just show up when using MTP which is nice, and the computer recognizes what camera you have, but the when the camera is set to USB Mass Storage(and many are by default), the file structure is exactly the same on the SD Card. Also one other note for the AX53, it saves photos to "USB Storage\DCIM\100MSDCF\" and saves videos to "USB Storage\PRIVATE\CLIP\". It's a weird file structure, but it's not so bad once you figure it out. To be clear, when it's set to Mass Storage, it opens the camera as USB Drive. The "PMHome" should be disregarded. Don't delete it, but don't bother opening it.
Unfortunately I am not able to change the USB connection to MTP. It won't let me do it whether it is hooked to my computer or unhooked. I am lost on Windows 11. Any suggestions?
Some question. Am a very beginner of this video stuffs. So I buy this camera and for me its OK. But here is some strange moment - for turning camera's power ON I must open LCD monitor. Well and question : Is it OK for taking out memory card while power is ON? I see no other possibility to do that.
Does this camera indeed record at 1080p? Have read some comments about it just being 720p. Maybe they didn't get the right micro SD cards? I'm skeptical =S.
i am unable to download the videos while the picutes could be downloaded easily via Sony Play Memory Browser. Help needed for video downloading via USB cable.
hey, i recorded videos on my handycam before i inserted a memory stick so all of my content is on the camera memory instead of the memory stick. do you know how i can transfer it onto the memory stick once i’ve inserted it into the camera?
Running Win 7 home. The computer can see the files but any attempt to copy or drag to a folder results in a "device in use" error. I bought the darn thing to quickly and easily film something that I'm up to, not upgrade my laptop. Best buy guy says it'll work with 7. Any clue?
Does this mean I don't have to use Sony play memories? I was hoping to use a different editing software. I am not tech at all. But I was trying to bypass play memories.
Thanks so much i was using the other cable 💀💀. I was worried for days something was wrong with my camera thanks so much for helping me out my worries you really helped me thanks again
I changed to MTP and was able to upload my one video. When trying to up loading anything else, I kept getting error messages and they would not work. Any suggestions please ?
sweet video! only problem i have is that i am using a chromebook and have to insert the microSD card into the chromebook to move files, but for some reason only my .jpg files show up? i got this camera very recently so please help me out if i'm missing something obvious!
You can download the program that the manual recommends. Works for me. PlayMemories Home I believe its how is called. ruclips.net/video/jhn1TJVy3Fo/видео.html
I messed this all up when I did it I unhooked the the camera from the PC as soon as I saw the folders. And than I could not find them, so I tried again and found them in my Windows 10 video editor photos so now I have to copy and share them to I put them in videos or pictures so what I did was make a Sony CX-405 folder for the videos I want to keep and can now delete them from the camera. So that is the way I will do it from now on and I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THIS CAMERA. There is no USB connect setting.
does anyone have a clue what might be going wrong with mine? when i look at my videos in the gallery they’re all there on my sd card but once i plug in my camera to the computer only my recent photos from the same recording session turn up. the most recent videos available are from 2016, and nothing after shows up despite the videos being visible from my camera screen
OMG! I just spent 2 miserable hours trying to get my vidz off the camcorder [just as i did 3 months ago with NO PROBLEM] then found your video and - all is well. THANK YOU. Gremlins got into the machine?
Thanks, but no go for me. I have a HDRCX455/B and when I did what you showed on the Video, I did not get the screen popup as you did. I get errors, and go to's and nothing works. My camera screen tells me to go to Sony Memory...something; and that didn't work either. Do I Need To Have a Memory Card to Copy Videos onto my Computer or a Video Editing Program? I'm not a computer person, obviously. Brand New Camera. You probably don't reply, but I'll give it a try. Thanks for any help. Ken
I have this camera but unfortunately at films and AVCHD mine does not come up on the computer the way yours does do I have to have VLC player in order to have this work thanks
Sony discontinued the PMB series software and came out with the series PMH, which is NOT COMPATIBLE with DCR-SR82. Can someone direct me to a website OTHER THAN SONY'S that offers the LAST PMB software that Sony issued long ago? Thanks in advance.
YAAAAAAAAAAS thx so much for this video i have been wondering for a while how to get videos from Sony Camcorders to RUclips and this helped so much!!! 5/5 stars!
thank you for the video. I thought it was weird that when I took the Micro SD card out and connected that directly to the MacBook that I did not see the HD files, only the .mp4 files in lower resolution.
Or you could simple remove the MicroSD card and put it on a laptop adapter, I use a SanDisk adapter and works perfectly. None the less good video, thank you.
@@titlaplayz It is on the video description "This video shows how to copy files from a Sony Handycam to a PC. " I never tried that but in last resource I would film the TV playing that cassette until I find a proper way to digitalize it!
I have no problems seeing/copying the files in either MTP or Mass Storage mode on my CX405. Though the files I see appears to be different under different mode. However, my problem is most of the files are unplayable on the PC! IrfanView reports JPG images as "Can't read file header! Unknown file format, empty/damaged file or file not found!" VLC will play 9M MTS files, but simply does nothing on 27M MTS or all MP4s. Why is Sony making things so difficult? About to take it back to the Sony store!
Great help. Manufactures are always changing things : | it can be a challenge to simply get files OFF the camcorder. ( I tried using a reader to simply pull files directly off the ejected 256GB sd but that didn't seem to work) THANK YOU!
everyone tells u how to transfer from cam to computer. I need to know how to transfer from computer to Sony camcorder. The Sony I have has a proyector. To-the-point and no bullshit. We need more people like you.

Thank you. Super easy. I used every port except the charging one. Didnt think that it can also transfer files. Thanks again
Perfect video. Why did Sony not put this in the manual?

Thanks , this fixed the problem. Camera settings were wrong, and it was not obvious what to do.
Trying one of these cameras out. Needed this video thank you

Thank you Thank you fabulous directions and changing the options helped too.
Nothing shows on my computer when I connect the mini usb :((
Does it work with laptop?
There is no USB connection by default to the Handycam models dating older than 1995. You gotta get some device to bridge this gap.

MAY god bless you sir you put an end to a long day
There is no mass storage on mine. And it can't save to sd card. And I can't get the cord to pc to work. I guess not all camcorders can do this.
For me my older Sony does not show a thumb nail on windows. then when I play the video on windows 8 all i have is sound.
Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! Now I can see file folders on the camera.
thank you so much, just what I needed. I got what I needed off my camera and am now able to complete my video.
Great and helpful video. I was truly stumped.
Hey what’s is that usb cable called that you used
there should be one included when you bought the camera
