Big Daddy Roth interviewing Von Dutch back in the early-mid eighties. At Von Dutch's garage/shop.
They talk about-Von Dutch's Dad, typography, pin striping and all that entails, gold leaf, squirrel hair for brushes, oil in the ground and sign painting.
And my favorite, Von Dutch holds forth on design and being intuitive. About how you know when it's "wrong." It looks wrong.
He has some foreign bikes that are discussed. Toward the end they show that Von Dutch also is a muzzle loader hunter and keeps black powder around in tins. Since he's obviously a heavy smoker I found that funny.
Got the tape from Ed Roth's mail order back in the 80s.
I noticed there are 10 minutes worth of this interview on the internet. Here's the whole she-bang. Quality better but still 2nd generation video. That quality is the reason for the seeming smudge under Von Dutch's nose. The video is averaging the dark nostril holes that are prominent on Von Dutch and darkening the area. When it's close and tight there is no smudging.
This is not monetized. The intent is to share something I'm assuming has become rarified almost to the point of being lost.
Love the fact he's complimenting us Brits on the "bike magic"
Thanks for posting this. I just spent an afternoon with 2 of my Heroes! What an amazing piece of History!
I'm glad they made the time to have a long chat. If Roth stopped to consider reward for it, it never would have got made. He obviously wanted Von Dutch to talk about something he was the best at.
Amazing history from two of the best, ever! So much to learn from just watching these videos. Thanks for posting.
Awesome. That is all I have to say. Two cups of coffee and this series is the most enjoyable way I've spent an early morning in a long time. Thank you for sharing this my friend. A lot of inspiration right here.
Thank you so much, I'll be watching this many times, true legends and inspiration for newbie's like myself. Kool!!
Thank You ... Two of my Heroes
Many Blessings , SMR
Thankyou for the upload....WONDERFUL!!! :D
Thank you very much for posting this series . I just got finished watching all of them , beginning to end and I've gotta say , it's a fantastic bit of history right there ! I learned more about striping & sign lettering & the theories behind it than I thought I would . I'm sure I'll watch it again .
Thank you, been a cold rainy day, no painting today. Great to sit and see this again, inspired!
I knew VonDutch in the 70's in Tempe Az Good to see history of a good friend. Bill Cook PHX
That was really interesting...i could've stood in that garage quietly all day listening to these guy's talk...
Watched every video in order. Thanks so much for posting. I even picked up a few pionters.
is that larry watson in the backround?
ATTENTION VON DUTCH FANS!: You absolutely need to locate and purchase the 1967 movie: "ANGELS FROM HELL". It's chock full of Dutch's artwork! The opening credits alone are mind-boggling! There's a barn door he painted a Harley chopper on that today would probably auction off for 10 grand (my estimate) Seriously, find this movie! I found mine but it included 3 other movies including "CHATTERBOX" about a woman and her singing...well, "box". (haven't watched it...yet) Also in Angels From Hell is a great appearance by world famous racer, bike builder, shop owner and stuntman Bud Ekins. He has a no-speaking role but rides a blue Rickman Metisse 500 Triumph that will wet your leg! I paused my disc just to drool over it (much to my wife's protest) He does 2 very good jumps on it. This was only 4 years after The Great Escape jump. Now, any true Von Dutch fan will go to Amazon right now and care up this movie! You'll thank me someday!
Great videos, very cool.
Thanks so much for sharing them.
Hey Plaz,
thanks for these! It's good to visit the past, it helps us carry on! Kinda like building blocks. Keep up the great work! I needed a re-charge..
Cheers,
C
Super talented man Von Dutch.
Thank You for posting this!!!!! I just came across this particular video.... I'm going to see if I can find the rest... Thanks again! ;)
Awesome footage! Just stumbled across these videos while looking at some striping vids, and this is one of the coolest unexpected surprises! thanks for posting and I would love to see anything else you have of Dutch or Roth. really gets me pumped to keep striping and continuing the art.
I watched all of these , it was great to see the History too bad ... More More !!!
My most popular youtube offering. Cool people seem to appreciate it.
Priceless videos..... I have a couple of items I got from Danny Brucker with Von Dutches signature, Needle nose pliers and Navigators Dividers he made for Danny who flew. Danny was living in Steve Mcqueens old hanger at the Santa Paula airport at the time. He told me that Von Dutch lived on their property in his bus. I'm curious where this video was taken as I hear planes in the back ground from time to time ?
So cool.
brilliant
Tks for sharing
Wow...awesome series...thanks!!
My dad got a german biker helmet striped by Dutch in Tempe Az for 15 bucks..then he loned it to a biker buddy and never saw it again
That's a sad story. I hope the borrower valued it as a piece of art.
@@plazpastic hells angels..so i dont think they gave a shit..but I wish he still had it..lol
I'll send you an email. For anyone interested. Another party wanted the "original' material. I accidentally destroyed the only intact, end to end copy I had trying to make him a copy. Hadn't finalized the DVD. It only played on the player that made copies. Complications ensued.
