    I use the Milwaukee fastback every day at work (construction). After a little break in period you can fling it open and close so easily you don't realize it anymore. It's honestly replaced my pocket knife for 95% of my daily uses. I've had the same one for the last few years and the biggest issue is needing to tighten the clip once so it doesn't come off my belt. I use a slightly thicker version that can carry an additional 4 blades in storage and has a notch on the back of the handle so you can cut twine without having to open the blade up at all. Maybe adds half an inch of width bulk if you are worried about that sort of thing.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  22 дня назад +2

      I figured this would be the case with the opening, it definitely got easier the more I broke it in. Almost got the version with the notch, definitely seems useful and I love the idea of extra blade storage, especially for construction work. Thanks for the insights and support!

    The hook on your Swiss Army is traditionally for crocheting. Same goes for the poking tool, that has a sewing hole in order to perform repairs, or other needle work. As someone who's camped before, you're forced to repair tears in materials for your tent, kot, shoes, patches, etc. , and it assists in those repairs in a pinch. The crochet hook is very large for usual uses, but that's so it can have multiple purposes as you've described. Those Army Knives are utility tools you'd have to otherwise carry repair kits for, and those tools allow you to craft new gear or repair stuff before your mission is over.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  7 дней назад

      Crocheting definitely makes sense. I knew about the awl/poker, but the combo definitely adds some clarity. Appreciate the insights on this one!

    • @flauntyy
      @flauntyy 7 дней назад

      Actually, I did some research and it seems the hook is actually purposed originally for dislocating cartridges for firearms, and was later placed in designs (like a handle) to be for holding stringed packages. That's originally what it was designed for, but I've always seen people in the field or people who camp use it for crocheting in a pinch, so they don't have to carry additional kits, since every bit of weight counts. Apologies for being stupid@@joshfenn

    The Super Tinker is one of my favourites but you might also want to check out the Climber. Exact same tool set expect it swaps the Philips head for the classic corkscrew. Even if you don’t need it to open wine it has a few advantages. It allows you to fit the micro screwdriver which as a glasses wearer could be handy. You can also put some tinder in there to go with the fero rod you mentioned. Aside from that it can be good for undoing tight knots. The hook on the back is traditionally a parcel hook, so you’d use it of you had a stack of newspapers or a parcel tied with string to carry them more comfortably. Some people use it the same way to carry groceries. I used it most recently when our bath panel got pushed in slightly. The gap was too small to get a finger in but that hook worked a treat.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  23 дня назад +3

      Great tips with the corkscrew version, love these ideas. I had figured since I wouldn’t need the wine opener it would be better to swap but the tinder idea to match the ferro rod sounds really great.

      @philipknowles1 23 дня назад

      @@joshfenn Yeah, the Philips head is nice to have but not sure if you know but the tip of the can opener can be used as one in a pinch. Works quite well.

    I feel you on the water. I’m from a city that has been voted best tasting tap water from Forbes on multiple occasions. You take it for granted until you go somewhere else and fill up your water bottle and immediately pour it out after taking a sip. I never understood why people paid for bottled water until I started frequently traveling to Texas.

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  23 дня назад +2

      So true! Michigan water wasn’t great, but always tolerable in most cities. Moving out to Portland and getting used to our water has really spoiled me though, whenever I travel it’s always so disappointing haha. The filter bottles have been working pretty well for me though!

    Something budget I've added to my EDC recently is a pen. I am still not on the edc notebook club, but I carry a pen mostly to fidget and for the occasional form. The Papermate InkJoy gel 0.7 retractable goes for 8 ish dollars for a pack of four, and they are really nice. It sates my need for a writing/fidget/pointing instrument without breaking the bank.

    Great video. You should test the RFID blocking in the wallet. Maybe next time you fill up or stay in a hotel. My wife had her card "borrowed" wirelessly using an RFID blocking wallet. We have since moved to a card that emits a blocking signal. I tried that out and it worked well.

    • @joshfenn

    Good deal on the sling-adding any kind of waterproofing or extra ruggedness tends to raise the cost. Its shocking that the Super Tinker is so cheap! Its nice to have that many tools for camping. Any suggestions on over ear headphones for gym use? Any suggestions on mp3 players thatre bluetooth capable and usbc rechargeable plugged? Trying to cut down on variety of plugs since I just got an ipad mini that has usbc! But I dont like to stream music, off my phone, and sometimes I am so remote in my hijet or hiace, I cant stream anything hahaha. I need to learn how to emulate so I can take n64, ps1, ps2, gamecube, and other classic games when I am on one of my props which has no internet or anything haha. I usually run an n64 my daughter got for me new in box from a gaming thrift store in japan, and I play golden eye, and other old games haha. She got me an snes, but I havent gotten any games yet. But everyones telling me to do emulation so I can have variety when I am on my prop for weeks at a time.
    My summer carry right now are as follows:
    evergoods mhp in their brown color, dark angel medical kit, extra tq, some extra packing etc booboo stuff, an anker power bank, a 65watt charger brick, cheap skullcandy usbc headphones sync to a sandisk bluetooth mp3 player. Doesnt use usbc, uses an older micro usb? user interface is tedious. I was using an older samsung s7 with a 500fb microsd for music before, but it wont hold a charge anymore haha. tethered usbc fenix light thats red colored meant for a keychain i think just got and tossed onto there. I have a small pad that can be left out with my battery bank to charge it, but takes all day. I keep a small bible in there. food bar, lolipops, gum, sunblock, handsanitizer, dusk mask, and earplugs, a guy I met at a knife show in texas gifted me a titanium zippo with a mountain, trees, sun, called pdw, and has an electric insert? Its usbc was from a shop in hong kong. cable is a high watt for got whom from on amazon... able to charge my ipad very quickly. I keep mechx gloves, thick neon green gloves, doggie poop bags, a trash bag cause I clean random trails and parkways when I see they are filthy, I got a cheap (prob mfr in same factory as hydroflask) 20oz hydro flask looking bottle from ross for 3.99 vs 25 at rei. Lastly, a write in rain notebook and pen, orange, love high vis. Have a leatherman surge on my belt, also an old rat cutlery co rat 3 Ive had I think for 15-20 years? I cant remember... I also keep a 44mag colt on my hip around my property, and a 44mag henry x lever rfl in my hijet or the acty or etc trucks. Recently though my kids have had me using a 10mm for my wandering protecting haha. More capacity they say.
    I use a 2000L coast headlamp I got on clearance at home depot before for 12, I think it was originally 70 bucks? I cant remember, but I also got their TX22R, the big light, 5000L which sits on my trucks dash. Trying to save money so went away from mac, snap on, etc.
    For my kei trucks been building them dedicated on trail tool kits, went to harbor freight, and have to say, complete metric stuff, everything, didnt break the bank! M12 Milwaukee seems to be the ticket for my portable power tool needs for those! Need to wait for black friday sales!

    • @joshfenn
      @joshfenn  22 дня назад +2

      Love all the detail with everything, thanks so much for sharing!
      I don’t really know of any mp3 players these days, it’s been quite a few years since I looked into the category. I also spend a lot of time away from internet and cell service and usually just download directly to my phone, but I can see the appeal of a dedicated player too.
      For headphones, I have mostly used earbuds for quite a while, but really enjoyed the Sony XM4’s when I tested them. They have the newer XM5 but the price can be steep. If you’re okay with open back wired headphones I have the sennheiser HD6XX. Incredible sound and value but not great for travel with the wires, they live at my desk for editing audio. Haven’t tried the over ear soundcore headphones but their speakers and earbuds have both been great - might be worth checking into.
      Hope this helps!
