Madonna never nominated for a grammys for her albums (outside the music videos) until her ''Bedtime Stories'' album who it's received a nomination for best pop album. To date, only ''Bedtime Stories'', ''Ray of Light'' and ''Music'' was nominated for album pop of the year.

I really think pop artists get nominated for Grammys a lot more easily now a days. I swear a lot of this current crop of nominees aren’t very excellent, just the top selling.

Fun Fact that Andre Betts (who he produced this song) said in interview: The spoken word line ''Waiting For You'' was a sample of the song ''Justify My Love''. Andre Betts told in a retrospection interview about the album for his 25th anniversary that he and Madonna used the line ''Waiting For You'' for the ''Justify My Love'' song to writing the melody of this song and he re-used this line in this song.
Andre Betts give a huge jazzy feel in ''Where Life Begins'', ''Waiting'' and ''Secret Garden''.
Also, if you like this song, she re-recording this song with the rapper Everlast when she released the ballad ''Rain'' (a another song of this album) has the last single of this album and this remix was including has the B-Side of ''Rain''.
Wait when you hear the two next songs of this album, because it's was with the two next songs who she made a bitch attitude with theses two songs.

I too tend to lean more towards the songs with the jazzier feel on Erotica. I wasn't ready for this "grown up" sounding Madonna when Erotica was first released so it literally took me years to appreciate the brilliance of this song.

When you loved Where Life Begins (also amazing), I knew you were gonna love this one since those two were the same co-writer/co-producer in Andre Betts. This may be my favorite non-single from Erotica....nah, I take that back, it's absolutely my favorite non-single from Erotica. Her syncopations in the spoken part and the singing, plus the jazzy chord changes and that KEY CHANGE at the end - it gets under your skin in the best way. I never get tired of this song!
I agree, so timeless, sexy and classy. People overlook how urban this album is. This is Madonna singing over straight up jazzy Hip Hop beats, perfect.

This album was a lot heavier and sadder than the general public realized. For casual listeners/observers they probably thought this was wall-to-wall sex jams because that’s how it was marketed.
The world changed DRASTICALLY in the mid-90’s though and it wasn’t commonplace like it is nowadays to hear coarse language on albums so you can tell she kind of kept those last few lyrics hard to decipher 😄
One last thing I’ll say is, that first decade of Madonna’s career was absolute fire. The Madonna we see today doesn’t at all resemble the Madonna of yore but she sure was a force of nature. This song is just another shining example of her at peak-swagger.
The biggest point missed on this album by people who didn’t even listen to it.

This was definitely one of my favourites from this album. I forgot how much I actually loved this album. I'm now more an 80s Madonna fan, but as a teenager this album was on heavy rotation.
This and Secret Garden were my instant favourite once I got the Erotica CD, back in 1992. Both written and produced by Andre Betts.True master pieces.
It's just sad how fickle Madonna fans can be. Because her 80's songs are more well-known, suddenly these days they prefer her 80's music as well.

AHH Mama Empress I can't believe I forgot to mention this - but her outro of "break my heart / don't break my heart" is literally what she did in Nick Kamen's 1986 song Each Time You Break My Heart that she sings back-up on, that was a True Blue reject song. She used it again here in the best way.

There's a cool Waiting remix as a B side on the Rain single. Love this song. She sounds so hot when she talks/whispers. I always wished there was a video to it.

I love ALL of the Andre Betts work on Erotica. I honestly wish Madonna had a whole album with him. It's an actual band playing real instruments and makes her loose, street vibe really come alive. Don't get me wrong, I love Bad Girl, Rain and Deeper & Deeper but the Pettibone stuff is all over the map production-wise. Hard to be cohesive with this album.
Two things: Notice how often Madonna has the theme of time/impatience/waiting in her work. I've always thought of her as a LIFE FORCE in a race with time. Her mom dying young certainly planted this seed in her (you put this in me). I know we like to see her as a goddess, but when she's grounded in the struggle, she shines best.
Thing 2: Near the end when she repeats "Break my heart / Don't break my heart", I'm pretty sure that's a riff from Each Time You Break My Heart, a Steve Bray collaboration she gave to model Nick Kamen (and which she sings backup on). CONGRATS AGAIN on your new edition!

Ok, this is it. We've reached the highlight of this album for me. This is my favorite Erotica track! It's so real, it's real ish she talking about, the sound, the hip hop, the jazz, her speaking the verses, singing the chorus, it's perfect. My favorite track.

Welcome Back Empress! One thing to remember about this song is the little "tic-tok" sound effect that she uses in the middle of the song @ 5:43. I love that part! After this album Madonna does throwbacks / references to that sound effect in 2 of her newer songs. One of those songs you have already heard! Do you remember the "tic-tok" sound from the song "Hung Up" (2005)? She also used the tic-tok reference again in 2015 in a song called "4 Minutes" featuring Justin Timberlake. One thing I really liked about this song the first time I heard it was the jazz piano solos. I played piano for the high school jazz band at the time. I wasn't nearly as good as whoever plays on this album though by a long shot hahaha! But of course I thought that was so cool that Madonna added jazz piano to her album.

Congratulations again! I love this track (its that piano!!) and album, the more I listened to it the more it grew on me, but i agree that there are a few weaker songs at the start. Words and Rain, that are yet to come, are my favourite tracks on Erotica, but having said that, this album, along with Ray of Light, are my favourite M albums. I managed to get tkts for her London tour this year, am beyond excited!

I’m soooo glad you love this one. It’s such a strong song, and really hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. Though it’s definitely one of the finer tracks on the album, and it surely contributed to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame listing the album as one of the most revolutionary albums of ALL TIME. It’s very VERY important to see it in historical context, as I’ve said before. This album was culturally important, like the Sex book, for fighting back against the puritanical homophobic anti sex regime that had sprung up because of the fear of HIV, annd judgement of we gay men as the perceived demons who would infect the suburbs!! But in terms of musical history, this album was a massive influence on Janet’s work that followed it, switching down to a jazzy laid back whispery mood as she did, as well as many of the cooler female artists (and some males) in this century.
I’m sure you’ve gathered this by now, but there’s a SERIOUS pattern of Madonna not getting the credit she deserves for her ART because her fame and success, her mastery of publicity, and crucially her sexual assertiveness WHILE being in control of her life (a serious no-no for the patriarchy) have always been the main focus of her press. She’s perceived as a business woman and an arch manipulator of the media, both of which are true, but come ON people… Just LISTEN to how brilliant her WORK is.
The sign off on this song doubles as the perfect burn to the tired gatekeepers of the patriarchy: “The next time you want pussy… huh… just look in the mirror, baby.”
You are 100% right - Madonna is still underrated as an ARTIST and people are still too stupid to comprehend that.

The Mae West comparison is so apt. I've always loved knowing that Mae and Marlene Dietrich were such great friends. There's a great pic of them together...ultra feminine Mae next to Dietrich in her suit and tie. I see so much of both of them in Madonna. I feel like we're currently in a EROTICA/DITA part 2 era right now. Madonna hasn't been this shocking, defiant, button-pushing and hungry for attention (even if it's negative) since 1993. All I can say is that if there's one thing I've learned in all my years as a fan is that if you don't like the current place she's in, just wait. It'll eventually pass. But the more people complain and object, the more she'll rebelliously cling to it. That's why I'm trying to not bemoan what she's doing now.
