When you mentioned Rain as a song that drew a fan of 80s Madonna back...you were talking of my mom (who became a fan because of True Blue). She assumed this song was a song for a movie or a new album and when she saw it was on Erotica she said 'oh wow..maybe this will help get her fans back'.

Produced by Shep. The song was released as the albums fourth single, I think. After "Bad Girl" flopped and the Madonna media backlash was in full gear. This song with its relaxed flow and tasteful accompanying video was definitely used to try and bring down the temperature. It KINDA worked, because this song peaked at #14, which was a rebound from the #36 peak "Bad Girl" saw. But in the grand scheme of things, it didn't ultimately fix things. I know the song got decent airplay in other markets, but I don't recall my local radio station ever playing it. Madonna had become such an overexposed and polarizing figure by then that it was gonna take more than this nice song to quell the hostility towards her, but it was the first step in bringing her back.

In a interview of 2017, Shep Pettibone told that Madonna wrote that song during a rainning day after she coming in the studio. It's was one of the first songs she started to write of this album with the title-track and ''Deeper And Deeper''. Also, unlike ''Erotica'' and ''Deeper and Deeper'' who theses two songs have many changes until the final product, the bassline was already that in the demo and already have this new age influences. Unlike the others singles (or others songs also) of this album, this song was more a conventionnal topic, since it's was a love song. Madonna also told that ''Rain'' was a love song and use the word ''Rain'' has the metaphor of love to washed away the sorrow and take away the pain.. Also, many critics noted her similitudes with the work with Enya and Peter Gabriel for his sound. Because it's was a mix of RnB and New Age. Notably that this song was with ''Deeper and Deeper'' her most radio-friendly song of this album
''Rain'' was the fourth single of the album in US after ''Bad Girl'' and the fifth single worldwide after ''Fever'' (since ''Fever'' was not released in US in single). Because of the cold reaction of ''Bad Girl'', Warner wanted to released a more radio-friendly song and this song was the right single at the right moment after ''Bad Girl'' received a cold reception, notably in AC radios. After her debut in radios, her reaction in radios was already better then ''Bad Girl'' and already considered a re-bound of the charts after the cold reaction of ''Bad Girl''. This song reaching n.14 in US (a re-bound, who Bad Girl only reaching n.36), but also top 10 in seven countrys in end of 1993.
The video also was a major change of her image of the others videos of the ''Erotica'' era, who she adopted a soft image. The video won a MTV for her artistic direction of this video. This image was a lead-in to her image of ''Bedtime Stories'' era and this single really marked the end of this era for her image of this album. Also, the video used the radio version.
For the single, two versions was released, in orders to the radios make the choices to playing , the radio edit and a radio remix by Daniel Abraham. Some playing the radio remix, others playing the radio edit (who she used a more shortner intro and outro).

🌬️⛈️ Rain is another masterpiece from a woman widely treated as talentless by fools in the press then and now. This song is both very genre and yet pushes the genre to the limit. An R&B ballad with such dark harmonies and that blissfully expansive break, then the risk of the dueling Madonnas overlapping spoken word from left and right. The song does have a different genesis than the rest of Erotica, your clever ears aint lying to ya! It was originally conceived by Madonna as a centerpiece for an unfinished project with Alek Keshishian (director of Truth or Dare), when they were devising a musical based on Emily Bronte’s essential romantic epic Wuthering Heights. Rain WAS composed and recorded as part of the earliest Erotica sessions with Shep though, alongside Deeper and Deeper and Bad Girl, but yes, it has it’s own world to it too.
I definitely hear the aesthetic links to Crazy For You, as well as Live To Tell actually. Live To Tell is artistically superior (easily one of the greatest ballads by any artist ever) with it’s sparse instrumentation and spacious, haunting atmosphere, but that rich lower register is there, so vulnerable yet so powerfully defiant. I can also see a bit of Wilson Phillips’ Hold On in the harmonies, but the harmonies in Rain are stranger and darker and more risky. Madonna definitely doesn’t get enough praise for her layering of harmonies, which are far too consistently HER to be the sole influence of any one producer. Let’s not forget that she co-produces all her work. The artist I think this song feels vocally most similar to, is Karen Carpenter. Madonna obviously doesn’t have the note perfect voice Karen C had (NOBODY ever will!) but that velvety vulnerable lower register is very reminiscent on this track.
This song DID receive a lot of GREAT reviews then, and has since been recognised as one of her best singles - out of a list of like 100 best singles!! HOW people cling to this completely spurious notion that she lacks talent is BEYOND ME… Compare the vast diversity of her work to the repetitive, derivative and often dull singles of Lady Gaga, who is lauded as a “real” musician because of her more reliably strong voice and ability to play multiple instruments… Like ok, so can everyone who went to Tisch School of the Arts because they grew up with a millionaire father… Ugh, apology for the rant, I’m not completely anti Gaga. I storyboarded her video for Stupid Love (which was a lot better in the boards, btw) but I get so tired of her fake struggle narrative that borrows so heavily from Madonna’s real life climb, and I also tire of people worshipping her formulaic rock songs set to euro dance beats as anything remotely unique, original or virtuosic. Ok rant over (until next time).
Side note: The music video to Rain is one of Madonna’s many many best. It perfectly captures the song, but in a way that isn’t at all obvious, exemplifying both Madonna’s irony and the general cultural irony by which the 90s were defined.

      @petersavieri Год назад +1

@@EmpressReacts good to be back!! Can’t wait to see more Madonna journey unfold!!
I actually can’t remember if she was planning to star in the Wuthering Heights musical project, or if it was something she was writing to have a life as a property outside her career as a performer.
I know that Alek Keshishian first came to her attention as a filmmaker when he was working on music videos. He’d worked with David Fincher before, and when Fincher pulled out of the behind the scenes project that later evolved into Truth or Dare, she took a risk and hired Alek.
He’d sent her his graduate film from Harvard, which was Wuthering Heights themed, and included music by Kate Bush (of course!) and Madonna, and she was impressed (and flattered). So the Wuthering Heights project with him would’ve been an expansion on that work.

When I first heard Rain, I loved it. I have always thought the video is magnificent, and one of her best.
Brunette Madonna is always my personal favorite. She always seems sweeter and more gentle with dark hair. I think it's because she enjoys fighting against the stereotypes of blondes as submissive and dumb.
I also loved the radio version of Rain, which has a much lighter beat and insturmentation.
The single also contained the great experimental dance track, Up Down Suite, which is basically a remix of a demo for one of her greatest songs ever- Goodbye To Innocence, which was only released on the Pro-choice benefit album, Just Say Roe. I definitely think Goodbye To Innocence should be reacted to among the Erotica era, despite not being released until 1994.
My favorite song on this album, and one of my favorite songs Madonna has ever written is the last song on the album. SECRET GARDEN. People find it underwhelming, but I think it's subtle, the melody is gorgeous, and the musicianship is the best on the album.
Otherwise, Why's It So Hard is a good foray into Reggae with an important message, but while I respect it, I don't enjoy it that much. . . and In This Life, about her mentor Christopher Flynn and the AIDS Crisis, is important, but also the rare example of one of Madonna's most depressing songs. It probably would be a beautiful song if it was in a major chord, but instead the minor chord makes it very dreary, which definitely fits the lyrics. Madonna loves In This Life though.
Sad you're almost done with Erotica.
I definitely wanted to mention Goodbye To Innocence because I believe it belongs to this era, and I wanted to mention Secret Garden before you get there, so hopefully you can appreciate it a little more. 😘

Rain is a fan favorite and was the final single in most markets, fifth single or fourth i believe. Beautiful video to come. You can always count on Madonna to deliver a great pop ballad/ mid tempo. Very melodic, most classic Madonna sounding track on the album, i agree.
I think if they wanted to avoid backlash and make sure the album sold alot, they could have released Rain as the first single, Deeper and Deeper as the second and then either go with Bad Girl or Erotica as the later ones. I love all four of them. I just think alot of the backlash had nothing to do with the music, it was just the Erotica video and Sex book. Rain did do well as the fourth/ fifth single considering the backlash peaked at #14 in the US and #7 in the UK and did well around the world. She got nominated for a couple of VMAS for the stunning video and got some airplay for this one.
They shortened the single version a little bit but did not change much.
Nice performance harmonizing with Donna and Nicki for the Girlie Show Tour coming up soon.

Empress, you are so right about this song being a comeback of sorts for Madonna. This was the very last single she released from Erotica and it really did save her career for sure, in the short term and the long term. Rain not only made the top 20 on the charts but the video was very popular and got lots of airplay over the Summer of '93. I also remember it being on the radio a lot. She was able to ride the success of this song as she went on tour that Summer, this being her most recent hit at the time. I think it reminded people that Madonna really was talented as a musician, not just all about taking her clothes off like the media would have had us believe, and the general public could more easily empathize with the sincerity in her vocals on this song than they could with someone playing the part of a sex diva. I liked this song at the time not only because it was beautiful (and as a teenager I really wanted to experience the kind of feelings Madonna was describing in the lyrics!) but because I loved how it showed Madonna's talent for not just playing the same one-dimensional character all the time like a lot of pop singers did (and do). She's a sexy diva with a sex book AND she's a regular girl with normal feelings who can pull off a beautiful, wholesome ballad and still make the top 20. Brilliant! Who else could do that?

    (8:28)
...I'm afraid to even leave trivia, for that the 'Madonnaholics' will COME for me! ...ha-HAA!! ...THIS Song, is when Madonna FINALLY entered the "90's"; The Video was ASTOUNDING, and helped new Madge fans correlate w/ the Old(er) Ones...this is where "Dita" becomes born again, & her cold, detached views / ways of S-X, gets 'washed away'.....
    - ...the 4th single from the LP (in the USA), it hit a respectable #14 Pop; by then, Madonna realized chart positions didn't matter anymore. and good tunes, DID...The CD Single was one her BEST selling CD-5's, EVER...going Gold, which was RARE, for a single, then, in Fall, 1993....
    - ...The Single had a KNOCKOUT selection of tracks: the LP Version, the 'single remix', a remix of "Waiting" (w/ Everlast of House Of Pain), & a 'bonus' 13+ minute Dub track called, "Up Down Suite" which got a LOT of Dance Club play....
    - ...this tune helped get Madge her AC audience back too, because, afterwards, she did the Soundtrack tune "I'll Remember", and hit it BIG, with the 1994 Ballad, "Take A Bow"....A very, VERY important career-shifting tune, for her....

I think this is a sweet song so it stands out among the others, but I do think sound-wise it fits pretty well. I agree that the drums are fire - pretty sure they were intended to sound like thunderclaps. After "Bad Girl" flopped they released a "Radio Remix" of "Rain" which did pretty well but I think it's inferior to the album version and I'm sure you'll agree when you hear it. It's funny you mentioned Wilson Phillips, because I've always thought the same thing and the Radio Remix also made the song sound more like them. It's also the harmonies, which were all done by Madonna herself. Donna and Niki did the harmonies on tour - total Wilson Phillips vibes. 😆 Oh and the video is beautiful. 😍

This song is my favorite song on the album because like you said, for me it's the popiest song on the album. In addition to Wilson Phillips, I think this song was inspired or influenced by Karen Carpenter's vocals and melodies and harmonies.
I would say another song that has hard drumming is Open Your Heart. But this song Rain has drum machine beats. But it's great drum programming.
The other songs that I like on this album are Fever, Deeper And Deeper, Where Life Begins, Bad Girl, Wailing (depending on my mood for both of these songs), Words and Secret Garden.

I have to admit that although I’ve grown to love Erotica as a whole now, the first time I listened to it from beginning to end, it kind of felt tedious until “Rain” came on and brought such depth and life into the album. It was like a much-needed warm and sandy oasis in a desert of cold, house coolness. “Rain” is in my top five Madonna tracks and the video is a stunning study of cinematography. And…her live performance of it in The Girlie Show is the emotional highlight and brought so much soul to the concert. Funny that Erotica is such a cool, hip album where Madonna didn’t feel the need to show off her vocals on the more dance heavy tracks but the tour that came out of it had what is arguably Madonna’s most raw and powerful singing.

And i buying her greatest hits ''Something to Remember'' in 2009. Who she included many ballads of her career (except few of them like ''Bad Girl'' or ''Promise to Try'' who it's not included of this greatest hits). I listen the last year a lot ''Rain'' and love how this song sound so poweful and this new age ambiance was so pure and magic. I wasn't enough love the album to buying the ''Erotica'' album, but this song was one of my favorites ballads. So much RnB and timeless.
This album was very underground House, dance and hip-hop, but not for ''Bad Girl'', ''Rain'' and ''In This Life'' (all three remains a mid-tempo ballads and all produced by Shep Pettibone). I'm waiting your reaction for ''In This Life''. If you remember your reaction of the Omnibus documentary reaction, i talk about a little this song, you view his teacher ballet Christopher Flynn and ''In This Life'' was a memory of him and a another Madonna friend. It's was a moment who she didn't was ''DITA'' and who you enter in a very personal territory, because ''In This Life'' was very personal for her. If you Listen ''Jesus to a Child'' by George Michael and ''In This Life'', you hear in the lyrics a lot similitudes of the themes, the sadness, the autobiographical lyrics and the melancholic vibe of theses songs.

My prediction was 100% accurate. I had a strong feeling that Erotica is a very challenging album to listen to and I believed Empress will pretty much only like Rain and Bad Girl which were the standouts.
The Rain single was so refreshing because after listening to track after track in 1992-1993 from the Erotica album, it was very mixed and confusing. Same thing Empress was not committing to 10’s or 🔥 BOPS either… until Bad Girl and mostly Rain unexpectedly delivered good reactions. In a way, Rain saved the album and that’s the only reason why I still have it 30 years later, I skip all tracks and go straight to Bad Girl and Rain which I leave on repeat 🔂 😂
Next we’re excited for the Rain Music Video reaction coming soon.
Rain felt like a precursor to another Madonna major epic hit in 1994…. No spoilers…. The theme song from the movie With Honors which starred Brendan Fraser (who got a career comeback in that new movie The Whale award season).
I’m excited to see that reaction. Madonna’s producer Patrick Leonard always do magic collaborations together. They did Live To Tell, La Isla Bonita, Who’s That Girl, Open Your Heart, Like A Prayer, Cherish, Frozen….. so this movie theme song for With Honors that Madonna did will be very interesting to watch Empress reaction to it 😁

Erotica is a fan favourite but I think to many newer fans, it feels dated. The diehards from back in the day have rediscovered and reclaimed Erotica as one of our, if not, our number one, favourite albums but maybe newer fans feel it’s too stuck in the 90s. I think for those of us around in the 90s, Erotica felt groundbreaking both sonically and for what she was doing visually, esp. the Sex book which is wild. I think it still shocks people to this day that someone on Ms level would be so bold and provocative. This era is iconique but I’d be sad if much of the music gets forgotten.
