This was the first ever MTV awards show. Her manager told her she just destroyed her career and the opposite happened she blew up after this performance. The World was shocked. Looking back this performance is a hot mess but perfect and Iconic at the same time. I am surprised you complimented her vocals here as I feel it is one of her most inexperienced vocals. Still a classic however you look at it. It was a Pop culture moment.

True, but for the most part, her vocals here are almost spot on to the sound of the album. Her live vocals during this era, were not great, as she hadn’t found her true vocal range yet.

I was 16 and watched this with my mom. Man, if i could have licked the screen on our old 19" color tv i would have! My mom yelling at me to calm down and close my mouth while screaming what a complete slut she was. How she'd never make it, no talent slut, unlike Barbara Streisand and other "real" singers. Madonna was pure sex on high heels and that dress, her smile, her high pitched squeals, winks at the camera and rolling on the stage with her bits showing was just INCREDIBLE at that time. So controversial, sexy and here we are 40 years later STILL talking about it. By todays standards, this is nothing special, just a typical tuesday mid-day tik tok post by every teen girl in the country. But, in it's time, it blew up the world, freaked out every parent, the censors, the gov't. An icon and legend was born. Her and Joan Jett were the hottest, sexiest and most badass ladies of the era.

She’s said that she had lost one of her shoes at some point and that’s why she started rolling around on the floor, but I think that can only be half the story. I believe it might have happened in the middle as she first got off the cake, but at the end she was just rolling around for no reason. It’s hilarious. You can tell the cameramen had no idea what she was doing or how to film it. The audience was stunned, and her manager was furious. But the controversy was huge just from her garters and thighs being visible and it made a huge impact in her career. If you look at it now, it’s a hot mess, but that’s what makes it awesome. She got so much more polished as a stage artist and performer... she basically created the blueprint all other stars after her followed.

    • @dalee72
      @dalee72 3 года назад +1

No, she didn't lose her shoe. You can tell at beginning when she's at the top of the wedding cake and standing up, she tosses off her shoes one at a time. And when she got down to the bottom of the wedding cake and then to the floor that's when she laid down to put on her shoes one at a time. It was all planned and staged. She's a control freak. She wouldn't dare risk tripping and falling off the wedding cake with those high heels on. She fibbed in her interviews with Jay Leno and Howard Stern to pretend that she lost her shoes to tell an interesting and entertaining story. She knew what she was doing.

Something that nobody talks about but this early live performance shows so well is that Madonna knows how to find light and project to a camera. She’s has an innate artistry for knowing how to capture a moment, a look, a mood, etc., .
She ended the Reinvention Tour with an incredible montage displayed on the big screens of iconic images of her, photos, album covers, magazine covers, screen grabs from music videos, movies, interviews, live performances, etc.,….all PERFECTLY synched to her performing “Music” on stage.

Great reaction, Taylor, like always! Madonna has always been a live performer rather than an ordinary singer and she's been constantly reinventing herself. As a suggestion, you could also watch the different versions of Like A Virgin over the years. This is probably the song she reinvented the most in live performances, and on each subsequent tour, Like A Virgin is always one of the highlights of the show. You will definitely love the versions of The Girlie Show, Blond Ambition Tour, Confessions Tour and Rebel Heart Tour, each one is completely different from the other. It's great to see how fresh this song can be after almost 40 years.

Partly because she often concentrate on other aspects of the performances - choreography, underlying message etc. She can sing of course, but she's a performer and often has something to convey through her performances. Her hardcore fans are fans not necessarily because of her live singing vocal performances. It's more because of her versatility, her strength of conviction, her social justice sense of awareness etc. So there :-)

  • @Tobmex

These days it might not be that shocking...but in 1984. Showing off your butt in a weddingdress, and on TV...she herself dropped a shoe and goes down on the floor to put in on again, it happens when you see her dissapear for a moment, so it all became a lot of floor rolling. Her manager at the time was furious telling her that she just ruined her career. She never really was afraid of challenging the belief that women were not allowed to own their own sexuality and to combine it with intelligence at the same time. In 1984 - many people people just wanted her labeled as a pop bimbo with a Minne Mouse voice that would be gone soon.
The funny thing about Madonna is that she’s got a lot of humour: in late 80s she actually used a picture of her with Mickey/Minnie Mouse ears on the cover of one of her singles: “Dear Jessie”. Might be a fun nod to what people used to say about her.

This performance was all over the news for so many reasons. It was the first MTV Awards show and she opened it. She was huge pretty quickly, but she would only get even bigger and become a rare iconic and historical superstar. After this performance, Madonna did say decades later that her longtime manager at that time Freddy DeMann and gone off on her, "What the Hell was that!? Your career...IS OVER!" This was in regards to her rolling around on the stage, which she later claimed her shoe had come off and she was trying to grab it from under the dress, so she improvised. Now the performance is iconic and her career obviously wasn't over. And DeMann managed her until he retired in the mid-1990's.

It was 1984, she was just getting started in her iconic career. The live audience reaction here was relatively tamed-in reality they were stunned!
They were just hit by a “force of nature”-a performance so provocative and daring by that era’s standard for live female pop music performers on national tv.
Here’s a young, beautiful, talented, mid-western Catholic girl wearing crucifixes and rosary as jewelry, performing a song with a provocative title and lyrics; with her choreography and fashion- oozing with sensuous dare and eroticism. She has charisma and chutzpah. Madonna was named after her beloved late mother who like her dad were devout Catholics of Italian and French Canadian descent. Before this Madonna became famous, the Madonna (archaic Italian ma donna for my lady; ma dame in old French; madam in Middle English) in Catholic and Orthodox iconography/imagery refers to the artistic depictions of the Blessed Virgin Mary usually with the infant Jesus. Many of these early and medieval Madonna paintings and statues in cathedrals and churches are revered and venerated by the faithful. Madonna, throughout her career, will successfully juxtapose religious and sexual imagery and themes in her music, choreography, fashion and concert staging props. The rest of course is history.

it seems tame compared to today but in 1984, this was a total shocking performance. people only knew her from a couple of videos until this night. she was of course ridiculed by critics and media but the people got it and ate it up. like Steven *** (below} said, she blew up after this and became the most famous person in the world for next several years....its really hard to explain just how big she was back then because there isnt anyone today who has reached that status to compare. she was quoted a couple of years before, on American Bandstand, that she wanted "to rule the world" and that is exactly what she did, while being criticized, snubbed and disrespected. parents hated her and feminist thought that she set back the womens movement back 20 years. This went on for two decades but she hung around for 4 decades proved all of them wrong. She is the only artist, in the rock era to have the most top10 hits......which is still true today

It was her very first live MTV performance, everything went wrong and it catapulted her into stardom. The audience was lame and was shocked about what they just saw. Little did they know, it was only the beginning of the Queen of performance.

I instantly knew you wouldn’t get it when you watched it. On the surface this looks unpolished and uneventful today. First, the fashion. The Madonna “Wannabe” EXPLODED. People wanted to copy her look. Like Boy George, she used to dress like this before she was a star. This wasn’t manufactured. She blew people’s minds. They had stores that sold only her look. Lace, armbands, scarves, corsets. She grew up as a dancer so wearing leotards wasn’t unusual, but in a wedding dress context, it was very controversial. Second, the name. “Like a Virgin”. Like. This suggested she wasn’t a virgin. The name alone was a top-popper. Even the word virgin has a lasciviousness to it. Just like the outfit, it has the duality of innocence and taboo all in one. You don’t know how to feel. It’s confusing but titillating. This song is so iconic now, it sounds familiar and comfortable. But imagine this song didn’t exist. No one heard it. And hearing it like a virgin (see what I did there?) The beat, the lyrics. It was captivating. Third, her sexuality. Women weren’t allowed to express their sexuality. On the surface, she looks like and was called a whore. But, she’s in control of it. There’s an intelligence to her, and a power. She was doing it because she liked it, not because she wanted attention in the way you think. It’s almost tongue in cheek. Like she’s having fun, not taking herself too seriously, but she knows it throws you off your game. It’s almost like you know I’m hot, but you can’t have me kind of vibes. You can see the audience didn’t explode with appreciation. There was this apprehensive “WTF did I just watch” kind of vibe. You have to see interviews from then to get it in a way. Fourth, she’s stunning and unique. You can’t take your eyes off of her. While many copied her, no one could look like her. Her big expressive eyes. Her hair. Her style. You can see movies from then and in some ways they almost look stuck in time, like it’s a costume, a joke almost. With her, she struck this note of it looking timeless and cool. Almost like you could wear that today. I could see Ariana Grande wearing something similar and it would look cool. She somehow avoided all the comical elements of fashion back then, and defined her own brand of sexy cool. This performance was an explosion of all these things at once. Parents HATED it. Kids were like…wow. This is the future. What it did for women’s expression and rights. I can go on and on. I was 11 when this came out. Man did I get lucky being a part of the MTV generation. It was an explosion of visual entertainment. I used to stay up and watch “Friday Night Videos” on regular TV. Then MTV made a whole channel dedicated to it. Eye candy. Will never forget it.
