This is the lineup that arranger Leon Russell put together for Lewis.Jimmy Karstein on drums, Carl Radle on bass,Tommy Tripplehorn on guitar and father of actress Jeannie Tripplehorn, and Jon West a holdover from gary's original band on cordovox.Except for Jon West they were all Okie's that migrated to Hollywood after Leon had made a name for himself.Radle went on to play with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell and the Shelter People,Derek and the Dominos and lot others. Karstein drummed for Taj Mahal after Chuck Blackwell departed in late 69. All great Tulsa born musicians. On the recording session players like Tommy Tedesco played that great guitar and Hal Blaine on drums plus other members of the Wrecking Crew outfit.

"Sure Gonna Miss Her" is one of Gary Lewis's best songs, and he had a lot of great ones. It charted at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Bobby Russell. I'm kinda surprised to see so much of a fan base here. I've always loved these guys. But this band was a favorite, well, of mine anyway, like 60 years ago. Of course I've always cherished their music. About 40 or 50 years ago, I was with a group of friends, and we all stopped at this crazy place called the Saddleback Inn just outside LA. He was there, with newer guys no doubt.
I remember there was this break between sets. I left the group as well as the room and just decided to wander out to the empty lobby, just to get away for a bit. Gary walked in. I remember talking with him. He was such a sweet ordinary guy. It was such a thrill to actually meet the guy behind the music that I was so in love with at the time. Odd thing is, I didn't really seem to appreciate those moments, not really I mean, for many years later.
Really nice guy. His music was just magic for this kid, so very long ago.
I mean, how many of us are left, who remember the revolutionary magic of 1965. But, some things are just immortal. Memories are the oddest thing; something that hurts, but feels so strangely good at the same time.
Another mystery of life I guess.

Thats actually Tommy Tedesco, a studio musician thats playing that Spanish riff on a classical guitar, which is overdubbed . I really doubt that they were playing at all. If they were the input was turned off. The accordian really makes me scratch my head also, makes no sense whatsoever. It is nostalgic, but just goes to show you how much of construct and sham the whole music industry was. If you get a chance , watch the Wrecking Crew. It's a documentary on the real musicians that performed most of the music in the 60's.

This was originally performed live on the Sullivan show, you can hear the live chord right at the end, but the single was overdubbed for some reason. Which proves that the playboys amazing lead guitarist Tom Tripplehorn could in fact play those licks, which some people think "can't be duplicated"

    • @BuffaloBeatle

The instrumentals were provided by "The Wrecking Crew" and Gary Lewis was overdubbed by Ron Hickln.. Ordinarily Ed Sullivan would never tolerate "a lip sync", but Jerry Lewis put the pressure on him…. This is a "lip-sync" performance.. Gary Lewis could not sing.

So by then they had moved Gary from fake drum playing to fake guitar playing. Let's hear it for the Wrecking Crew who were the musicians on all these records.

To clarify other comments. Gary did not have a good voice (not my opinion. This was a documentary about this group). They used every studio trick to make him sound better. They wanted to take advantage of his name recognition. Ed Sullivan made everyone play live but this had to be an exception. The accordion was not expanded. You hear an organ and excellent licks but no-one playing them. Nice song but I’m surprised more people don’t do covers of it or do lessons.

Customer feedback is valuable. I have taken the time to communicate to video content creators. I state that if they “Choose” to allow their advertisers to “Force” me to view an ad before I can view their video, then I ”Choose” not to view their video. I thumbs down, unsubscribe and skip the video. Advertisers have many options. For example presenting ads that can be skipped after 5 seconds, banners and ads that run for only 5 seconds. My taking the time to give the video creators this feedback does not mean that I am steeling their product without paying for it or that I am a snow flake, a woke, a communist, a selfish child, am lazy or an ignorant person. I take the time to share with video content creators that there are many of their potential customers who simply refuse to be “Forced” to view ads for products or services for which they have no interest and the act of the advertisers “Forcing” them to view ads in such a way is offensive. This is a simple business choice that the content creator can choose to make. Thank you.

Total fake band. They are just miming to the Wrecking Crew recording here. Probably the biggest put up job in the history of music. Ron Hicklin was the real lead singer. Snuff Garrett just buried Lewis voice three levels deep below Garry Lewis in the unison mix. They were more fake than the Monkees. That's Carol Kaye actually playing bass on the recording that you're hearing. Listen to "Sealed With A Kiss" on RUclips. That's Gary Lewis actually off key voice. He couldn't sing a note on key which is why they brought in Ron Hicklin to sing on top of him in unison and burry him in the mix. It was a good concept band but totally fake. Leon Russell did all the arrangements and keyboards. Hal Blaine on drums.

His *early* films were inventive, imaginative, and funny. He was being compared to Chaplin for writing, directing, and starrring in his films.
By the mid 1960s, not so much.
A comparison: anyone listening to the last dozen albums by Paul McCartney without knowing he was once in a band called The Beatles would wonder what the fuss was about.
Lewis's film went from "amazing to see" to "impossible to watch."
