  • Only a small part of Steve Hunter's composition 'Camellia' was played in the Bette Midler movie 'The Rose' by Steve and The Rose Band. Now you can hear the full demo version, recorded in 1980 and mixed for this release in 2016 by Steve Hunter himself.

    Amazon: www.amazon.com....
    About Camellia:
Steve Hunter has fond memories of Bette Midler and making her laugh whenever he could during filming.
He was hired to be part of 'The Rose Band' that backed the fictional character played by Bette and is very proud to have been part of the movie.
During the filming Steve started writing a new piece of music which would eventually be called 'Camellia'. Whilst working on it during a lunch break, members of the band started joining in with him until everybody was playing it, even the horn section. Paul Rothschild the movie Music Producer walked in as they were playing and asked what the piece was, he loved it. That is how about eight bars (repeated) of 'Camellia' ended up being in the movie.
Steve went on to record the whole tune as a demo with a full band after the movie was released but until now it has never been heard. It was recorded back in 1980 so it was a challenge for Steve to mix the tracks and get them sounding as good as he could for this 2016 release and there are a few rough edges that could not be avoided.
The core band on the recording were: Steve Hunter - Guitars, Mark Leonard - Bass, Art Wood - Drums, Robby Buchanan - Keyboards. The Engineer on the session was Mike Sanders and it was recorded at Pasha Studio, Hollywood, CA.

This was always my favorite song on the soundtrack from the Rose. The movie of course edited it. Shame. The band's buildup is great. Well done.

Funny that it is the best song on the album and midler isn’t even involved in it.

Bette Midler is trying to claim that she wrote this song simply because it was featured on The Rose. This isn't her song nor does she own the rights. I've reported it on her channel.

Steve The Deacon Hunter : I have always loved this song since the very first time I heard it in the movie "The Rose". It is a beautiful, and yet very simple song...that is, what you hear in the movie. And I think it is the best and greatest homecoming song "The Rose" could have come home to. Bette Midler should have gotten the Academy award for best actress for this role. I don't think anyone could have played "The Rose" anywhere near as good as Bette Midler did. Thank you for writing "Camellia" and thank you for uploading it to RUclips.

Midler should have done “a star is born” instead of streisand who has not rhythm. Midler was at her peak around that time and would have been great in the role, of course, with different music. And manilow arrangements. Best reviews for Streisand’s film were “a bore is starred” and “a star is stillborn”.

This song deserved so much more attention than it was given back then. It was such a climactic build to the ending. So I had to wait 40 years to hear it all. Well .....it is worth the wait! Bravo! (and great work with Lou back in the day too!)

It's funny. I remember seeing The Rose around the time of it's release and of all the music that appeared in the film, this song was the one that stuck with me the most. Simple yet incredibly effective, it's one of those great 1970s rock overtures, that is designed to cast a spell of wonder over the crowd by letting the audience know, "....We're Not in Kansas anymore." A live a great live performance is transformative. It puts you in a fantasy world, if only for awhile. As David Lee Roth once said, "...My job is to make you feel young and skinny again." 'Camellia' has that energy.
