Just finished the series for the first time and I have never felt such disappointment in an ending and simultaneously such love for the characters. I really appreciated hearing how the manga turned out.
That’s a nice way to describe ending this series. I had a similar reaction but that disappointment eventually faded and turned into curiosity, which inspired this video! I’m really glad to be able to provide some closure for fans who may have felt a similar way as well. Thank you for your insightful comment 🙂
Finally got the chance to finish watching this. Despite loving Eva I know very little about gainax or their other projects so this was a fascinating insight. This isn't usually the type of manga/anime I would be interested in but this video was so good I may have to look into it now...
Thank you Thomas, really glad you enjoyed the video! Despite being a different genre, Kare Kano manages to keep a lot of Anno's signature style so I really think it's worth checking out if you like EVA in the slightest. I'd also check out Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water! That one's a great pre-EVA show from Anno.
Wow! I had no idea this series existed! Thank you for breaking it down I really wouldn’t have known where to start. I really like what you said at the end about how everything’s a process. I think nowadays we’re so blinded by over consumption, instant gratification & social media we forget the reality and this video really made me appreciate the “process” of life. Awesome video, keep it up!
Regarding the manga I don't feel like being as critical as you were about the second part, but I get what you mean. Advising fans to drop volumes 9-17 however sounds kind of unacceptable. Anyway, very nice video, well scripted and made. Personally my favorite part is Yukino's father backstory: it gets me so badly *every* time I watch it
Over time, my opinion has softened a bit on the manga. I don’t think those volumes are entirely skippable anymore but it’s good to know about their problems before going in. I don’t think I said to skip volume 9 though, that’s the Steel Snow volume 😭. I meant to say skip volumes 10-16 originally!
Personally I find that Kare kano is one of the best romance animes out there. Of course thats a personal opinion but its just never talked about or appreciated enough. I agree its not perfect because of the ending budget issues, but even that makes it something special. the story telling and how raw and real it is, the music, the artstyle its just so amazing. I have it all on dvd!
It's one of a kind for sure and its production issues are what ended up making it such an endearing series in the long run. Would love to own it on DVD one day! Thank you so much for watching :)
One of the best videos available treating Karekano’s series, making a complete comparison between the manga and the anime. I am happy to have found this, since it’s so hard to articulate my impressions surrounding these controversial but overall ambitious work ( both anime and manga). Thanks for the analysis.
I’m glad the video is finding it’s audience! I was really shocked to find such a lack of discussion surrounding KK’s manga. After I read Steel Snow, I knew it would be a major part of the video. I really appreciate your comment, thank you for the kind words 🥲
I'll probably finish watching this later (it's late and I've only seen the intro so far) but I remember seeking this anime out after being a fan of Eva. It's exactly like you said - it's got this odd quirky charm that owes both to the experimental nature of the animation, as well as - what I'll describe as - Hideaki Anno's style of "Show, don't tell" direction, choosing to focus on panning shots of important stills overlaid with dialogue instead of animating an entire scene, or using cutout chibi figures to show a scene which is less important to highlight the light-hearted nature of a character's scene exit, for example. When you have an anime that's primarily about relationships, you're naturally going to have a dialogue-heavy focus. It almost feels like we're looking through a well composed slideshow sometimes as an accompanyment to a radio drama. At other times, the animation got series and you could literally see the movement of tears that convey the seriousness of the scene and the raw emotion of the characters. The rapid shifts in the drawing styles, animation styles, colour and music choices gives a different tone, level of importance, and experience of each cut. We see it done in some anime that has come afterwards, such as the Bakemonogatari series. It somehow forces us to examine each moment differently, almost as if it's intruding on our psyches so that we don't recognise the genre, and are thus no longer immune to the tropes. How do you make a sappy lovey-dovey anime into something that pierces someone's heart? Maybe you'll first need to confuse them into thinking it's not a romance anime. It always hits harder when you least expect it I suppose.
Kare Kano is a series that I always enjoy hearing other’s thoughts on and this was excellently put, thanks for this. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video whenever you get back to it!
I got the full physical manga set on a Buy Nothing group a couple years ago intending to read them but never did, and only retroactively discovered, while starting to dive further into Anno's works, that he directed most of the anime adaptation. I watched the show last year and I more or less really enjoyed it!! I agree that Tsubasa's arc is a shining moment in the adaptation. This was a really interesting video, thank you for sharing!!
Always glad to see some Tsubasa support! She’s a very underrated character I feel. Also, that’s cool you found a whole set of KK manga. I’d like to finish my collection but the few volumes I have are fighting for shelf space enough as it is 🥲 Anyway, thanks very much for your comment and for watching!
watching this when I was 12 was a roller-coaster of a journey, so intense and so good and then the ending episodes came. there they were. like. wtf. every time I think about kare kano I still feel something missing inside me. this anime is still indebted with all of us.
@@themiragereigns I truly appreciate the kind words!! There will be more anime content to come in the future, even if the next few videos are focusing on horror for now ✌️
i feel like something that "explains" a lot of the problems of kare kano is the that one of the central theme's of the story is that kids and adults less far away mentally than they think, something that is reflected in many other characters like miyazawa's parents early marriage, kazuma's relationship with tsubasa and his band, reiji's relationship with souji, takefumi's relationship with sakura, extera. the only problem are the very icky ship (asaba relationship with sakura, izawas relationship with the dentist)
That’s a very interesting perspective on it and I think Tsuda did a great job of showing that theme in the earlier examples. Still, it’s hard to look past what happens with Asaba especially, which felt like a character assassination at best 🙃
Thanks for your comment and kind words! The production background and plot are interesting enough on their own but connecting the two felt right for the video.
I really, really liked the anime, the japanese voice acting, animation direction and soundtrack really made the comedy, romance and melancholy for me. I also read the manga from the start to continue but I thought the manga was absolutely terrible and stopped reading about halfway through the series. The anime adapting only the first third is a blessing in disguise because it's probably the best material. So I think my enjoyment did not come from kare kano but from Anno's/ the creatives direction. Episode with the paper cutouts and the live action sequences breaking the fourth wall showing an animation changing the cels are particular highlights for me, it's just so out there, bordering on avant garde. Production woes are sometimes a really good thing. Tight deadlines and hellish production causes pressure. And pressure creates diamonds.
Thanks for your comment! I do think the anime was great but the manga still has a few highlights in my eyes. Since this was her first long running series, I think Tsuda had a fair amount to contend with(publishing schedules, burnout) and handled it as best she could despite a few missteps.
This is a beautiful video, I’ve never read the manga and arimas backstory made me tear up. Your analysis is much appreciated as a lover of this show ❤ thank you
Thank you for this incredibly kind comment. Shining a light on the manga for anime only fans is one of the reasons I made this video in the first place. I'm glad took the time to watch it and more importantly, gained something from it. ☺
This was a great video. I love Kare Kano and hearing more about it was interesting! I need to get back to reading the manga even in spite of it having its flaws. I still love the characters tsuda has created and respect the best parts of her storytelling. edit: Also a quick note about the "so sad. im so sad." line: in japan they will often repeat words to create emphasis. It usually sounds quite awkward though when translated to english cause we just see it as redundant and uninspiring. Just think thats an interesting detail to keep in mind when reading japanese media translated to english.
Thanks for watching!! Thank you for also providing a bit of context with that scene. I do think the manga suffered a bit in spots as a result of early 00’s translation. It’s definitely a powerful moment which made the writing stand out to me that much more. In either case, something to look out for with translated media for sure!
