  • With a couple of hours to kill before meeting friends in Bovey Tracey, Devon, I took a walk along the old Mortonhampstead and South Devon Railway from Teigngrace Halt, to Newton Abbot. The railway was closed in the 60s but this section was reopened between 2011 and 2015 as a timber goods line, and so the tracks all remain in place.

Lovely I like to walk this and it closed in 2014 for freight services but extremely rarely today there was a train that had to go up there to be used as a siding/storage

The concrete building in the bushes was the old Acter Bacter plant, I’ll have to check the spelling on that… I think it was a fertiliser made with Lignite in the fifty’s and sixties.
The petition you mentioned is probably ‘The Heath Rail Link’. They have a social media page which is worth a look if you haven’t already seen it. The Canal Trust also have a website and social pages too.
There are a number of volunteers who maintain the canal, they are lovely and if you can catch any of them they are a treasure trove of knowledge in them selves.
The guy to speak to about the granite tramway has the mobile coffee shop further up the cycle track at the top of brocks lane.
    Cheers.

Excellent video Gareth, I love anything to do with the railways and exploring old lines, it's fascinating. I was lucky enough to see the Flying Scotsman come in to and stop at Exeter St David's (which is where I live) last Sunday and was working in Bovey Tracey just last week and by the way yes you were pronouncing 'Bovey' wrong but you did correct yourself half way through the video 😀. Keep up your great work at Ickonic , it's an outstanding platform ! 👍

Thanks Gareth,I have visited this area and explored parts of the line.May I add that at Heathfield there was a GWR line that branched off and followed the Teign valley route to Exeter.Their are some features still remaining including 2 tunnels I believe.Worth an explore If you revisit?I’m getting a bit too long in the tooth now to do it.

Nice video. Technically this line is out of use but not closed and still in Network Rail ownership so if you go on it it’s a criminal trespass. I don’t care, live and let live, and I dare say NR have better things to do, but just to make it clear. The section between the two crossed sleepers and Newton Abbot station IS still in use albeit rarely. The line suffered some flood damage a few years back which needs repairing before it can be used again.

Nice to see videos like this down South, most RUclipsrs who do this are based in the East Midlands areas.

I've noticed that. I'll be between the two as I'm south a fair bit with family on the Isle of Wight.

The flood damage at 16.40 is why the line is currently mothballed. At the moment I’m still the last guard to have worked over the line to Heathfield.

@@IckeWalks There is an active campaign group called Heathfield Rail Link Association. They are campaigning for a through service from Heathfield (or as close to Bovey as they can get) to Paignton.

Well that's spooky. I lived in Torquay growing up and my Dad would have us traipsing round the Stover canal in the Teigngrace area. There's also the granite tramway that came down from Haytor towards Newton Abbot. I'm sure on occasion I videoed some of it on a Panasonic M7 VHS camcorder, but doubt we kept any of the tapes circa late 80's early 90's. If only I'd knew RUclips was coming 😂
All those lost railway lines, short sightedness. They just reopened a section from Exeter to Okehampton with plans to extend. We'll have no choice soon when no one can afford a car !

Thats spooky you mentioned the granite. I just had an email from a descendant of the person that built it saying that the granite was used to build the Bank of England.
