The reason I wanted to know is that I have two meetings going on at the same time. One is the Zoom meeting which is free to attend but if you want to watch the recording later, you have to purchase a membership. The other is an in-person meeting where I have to take the minutes, and so I can’t skip it.
Here is a hint if you are allowed to record but can't do it with zoom or zoom videos are problematic. Use OBS instead of MSI afterburner. OBS takes about 10% of the size that msi afterburner does. I used to take notes during class by screen recording with msi. Switched to OBS it was much better. (100mb for 15 minutes of 1080p recording with OBS) Also I'm not a lawyer or anything but even if you record when you are allowed DO NOT PUBLISH any recording online under any circumstances. That could get you in some real trouble. Thats the most important part.
hi...do you encounter any errors on your laptop? One example is that all other participants in your zoom meeting cannot hear you when you're using OBS. Another problem that I have is that there is an error prompt from OBS about issues with "resources" and that my laptop is somewhat pausing for a second or two during recording.
So, let's say if I turn on xbox game bar screen recorder, would that record the meeting completely undetected? Especially granted the fact that I do not share my screen at that time, which I never do (?)
The classroom as well as zoom classrooms are absolutely NOT ANY teacher or educators private property therefore if they have things they might say that might get them in trouble they should probably not be a teacher at all. All zoom classes should actually be recorded by the teacher and provided to the entire class. It's called universal design of learning and if they don't know what UDL is they should go back and get more training. Instead of providing video and audio recordings to special kids only it should be available to all students and parents of elementary and middle school parents too. Obviously someone who doesn't "want" to be recorded is usually a teacher who is either inexperienced or not providing appropriate also known as de minimus education 👌 so when you ask your teacher if you can record and they say no or let's hold off on that ... Get an advocate or Education lawyer as soon as possible because something is something seriously wrong with a teacher who says no. Some teachers will say they are uncomfortable but okay because it helps a specific student and that's a good teacher but realistically this should be available for all just incase they need it or parents want to view for whatever reason! I think it's ridiculous recodings are not provided for later relearning for ALL students
I completely agree. I am an ADHD college student and would be lost without recorded classes. However recitation sessions are not recorded and posted, so i end up at a disadvantage anyway. It would be embarrassing for a student with accommodations to have to ask permission to the whole class to record these meetings every time and explain why. If it's for personal use, no one should need permission for something like this. Its not eavesdropping if people know you are in the meeting, so its not a privacy violation. I have always held the same view, that courses should be taught in such a way that "special" students do not need special accommodations. All power point material, notes and recording of all lectures should be available to all students. There are alot of undiagnosed ADHD students out there struggling when there is no need for it, which is just one of the main reasons for this.
Hi Ben, will the zoom host know if the student is recording the meeting using Bandicam or the screen recorder installed in the laptop like Huawei Matedbook D15? thanks!!!
The Zoom host will not know if you are recording using a third party app, unless your computer was given to you by your work/school where they may be able to see what other programs you are running.
Hi Ben, i want to ask several questions just to make sure😅 1. Does the host get notified if i use the ios build in screen recorder? 2. And for pc, does the host know if i use xbox game bar to screen record? Thank you.
Hi Victoria - no, to the best of my knowledge the host only gets notified if you are recording from within Zoom. But again, please don't get yourself in trouble if you aren't supposed to be recording the meeting!
Hi Ben! I have so many questions. 😅 1. What if i tap screen record built in my android, (that tini tiny camrecorder when u slide down ur phone). 2. Can Zoom notify the host about it? liiiike "Participant is recording" or like a pop-up on screen or just a symbol of Rec beside the participants name? 3. Will it leave history or notification bar? Even though I stopped recording or leave the room? I accidentally tap it and when i played thankfully no audio. It's been worrying me a lot. It will be a Big Help and an Enormous Thank you if you answered my pleas.
Hi - that's a good question, I'm actually not sure. The help page for local recording doesn't say multiple people CAN'T record at the same time: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362473-Local-recording
If they are recording from within Zoom you will see a little recording icon next to their name in the participants list, you will see this if you watch the video above.
If you just share a single program (like Powerpoint) and not your entire screen, then they won't see what other programs you have open. But don't get yourself in trouble recording meetings that you shouldn't be recording!
The idea of needing consent for recording when someone knows you are in the meeting (ie not eavesdropping) is pretty ridiculous when you think about it. You are technically recording meetings with your brain, so you would be breaking privacy laws unless you turned off your brain during the meeting. Of course, sometimes my brain does turn off during zoom meetings, which is why its important to record them with an external app.
The program I use to make these videos is called Camtasia. It is a screen recorder + video editor and I have a tutorial about it here: ruclips.net/video/83hn6tlZRIA/видео.html. However, it is expensive (over $200). Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) is a popular free screen recorder, and there are lots of tutorials for it on RUclips like this: ruclips.net/video/ySENWFIkL7c/видео.html. However, it is just a screen recorder and not a video editor, so if you want to edit your videos at all you would need another video editing program.
If the student is recording with a third-party app outside of Zoom, you will not know and cannot do anything about it, UNLESS the computer was given to the student by your school and the IT department has remote access to the computer.

How can I tell if a participant is recording a zoom meeting that I’m also a participant in? I’m using an iPad and the host gave permission to record but I think it’s an invasion of my privacy since I didn’t give my consent to be recorded. I can’t see anywhere on my screen that they are recording it.
When someone starts recording you should get a pop-up notification that they are recording, and then see the little recording icon next to their name in the participants list (see the video at 0:40). That ONLY tells you if they are recording from within Zoom and not with a third-party program. If you want to be 100% sure you are not recorded the best way to do that is to turn off your camera.
If I’m a CoHost recording the meeting but I cross to FB or Whatsapp, it will show wha I did on those app in the recording? Or the recording is just for the app?
It's recording your _screen_ remember. So whether you select to _share_ your FB page, or Whatsapp, or PowerPoint, or minimise your Zoom window and switch to your Chrome browser tab to buy something from Amazon, it will record that as you do so.
