I was looking for the answer why it wasn't show my video as a host in a big screen while I was locally recording my online class but it showed one of my student video instead. However I find it strange since I have "Mute all" the microphones already. After that I checked my recorded video, I'm surprised that it did showed my video as an active speaker not my student's video as I saw. • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 года назад

      Hi Marvin - I have another video about side by side view here, but in short, that mode is only available when someone else is sharing their screen, not when you are sharing yours: ruclips.net/video/5xNom7S3ffs/видео.html. However, you can get a similar effect if you have two monitors (share one screen and have gallery view or speaker view on the other): ruclips.net/video/qvoXMStoNcw/видео.html. I don't *think* being in full screen mode yourself will affect your recording, but unfortunately I probably won't have time to test it myself. If possible I'd recommend just doing a quick test of your own to make sure you get the recording you want, before recording an entire meeting and finding out it didn't turn out right.

    Hi Dr (of Philosophy) Finio! Thank you--very useful. I believe that the chat is only saved if recording to the cloud. I'm curious if recording to cloud is any different than recording to the local computer for everything else you demonstrated. And what are the pros and cons of recording to cloud vs locally. Again, really helpful. And thank you to your daughter for sharing Magic and her other friends!

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 года назад

      Hi - one of the major differences is that in cloud recording there is an option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files. So if you wanted to do any editing/splicing the different views together, it would give you that option. They have a big FAQ about local and cloud recording here that might be worth reading: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360040771752-Frequently-asked-questions-about-local-and-cloud-recording. Aside from differences there, I think the other major difference is convenience. If you EVENTUALLY need your recording online for students to access, then if you record locally first, you have to upload it manually somewhere later. Whereas depending on your situation, cloud recordings might be immediately available to students (e.g. at Cornell, Zoom is linked to our learning management system, Canvas, so the cloud recordings show up there automatically). Some people have expressed concerns that if you have slow or unreliable home internet, it could affect the cloud recording and you're better off recording locally, but I have not experimented with this.

    Amazing job, this was so helpful! Question about what shows up in recordings- i did a test run for recording to the cloud on a general meeting with live polls. I noticed in the recording the polls did not show up even though I was "sharing results" to the participants. I do want these visible in the recording for students. Do you know how to enable settings so the Polls are shown in recordings? I do not want to have all the thumbnails/ Zoom controls show up however, just the polls and active speaker screen share and video. Thank you for your help.

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  4 года назад

      Hi - unfortunately I'm not sure if there's a separate setting that would just allow you record the poll results. The only workaround I can think of is to take a screenshot of the poll results, paste them into another program like Powerpoint, then share your screen and show that...but that is cumbersome. Alternatively you could read the poll results out loud (25% of people picked A, 10% of people picked B...).

    But what if the hosts records the meeting and multiple people are also recording the meeting and everybody does different actions on their desktop, how then would the recording be saved ?
    Will it be the same for everyone(As how it is saved for the host) or not?
    Hope for an early reply.

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 года назад

      Hi Sadiya - I have not experimented with multiple simultaneous recordings but I BELIEVE the view will follow whatever the individual person doing the recording is doing, and for local recording they will all wind up with their own local copy. For cloud recording it may be more complicated and depend on the organization or who the host is etc (for example, I teach at Cornell and Zoom is integrated into Canvas for us, all our recordings show up there).

    Your videos have helped me a great deal as I navigate Zoom as a library programmer. Just curious if the spotlight and pin features work the same in a webinar. I am running a webinar, which I am planning to film. Ideally, I would like the recording to show only the person speaking. Each panelist is going to speak for a few moments and then one of the panelists will speak for about an hour. In an ideal world, the chat would not show up in the final recording.
    The Zoom articles are pretty non-specific when it comes to what final recordings will look like.

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 года назад

      Hi Sally - unfortunately all my tutorials are for meetings and not webinars. I don't think my institutional license through Cornell will even let me host a webinar myself to test it, I can only host meetings. If you are able to schedule your own webinars, I would just try a test version yourself. Either log in on multiple computers or get some family/friends/coworkers to join so you can simulate what it would be like to have a panel of speakers, and see what shows up in the recording. Sorry I can't be of more help!

      Hi Kristy - you're correct that if you only want to share the Powerpoint, it's better to just share the Powerpoint and not the whole monitor. Sharing the whole monitor can be easier if you want to share a lot of programs because you don't have to stop and re-start sharing for each one, although there's a new feature that lets you share multiple windows at once: ruclips.net/video/D_xZd5WC9VU/видео.html. If you want to record all the participants at once while screen sharing, then you need a Pro account with cloud recording, where there is an option to record shared screen, speaker, and gallery views all to separate video files. Hi Neil - a couple options:
      1) See the video around 4:55. If you minimize the video thumbnails while recording locally, they will not show up in the recording at all. Downside is you can't see anyone when you're presenting.
      2) If you have a pro account, there is an option in cloud recording to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files, so you could use that, and you would still be able to see people while sharing.

      @@academicenglishskillsuk Ok - I have never actually tried the cloud recording thing because it is not enabled for my institution. I thought it gave you speaker and gallery view recordings to download regardless of which view you were in during the meeting, but I could be wrong. Maybe try a practice meeting and make sure you toggle between gallery and speaker view?

    Thanks Ben. Do you know if there is a way to record a screen share and video, but have the video be LARGER than the screen-share or at the very least, side by side and equal, when recording in the cloud?

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 года назад

      When cloud recording there is an option to record screen share, speaker, and gallery views all to separate video files, but this option may be disabled by your organization (I can't enable it at Cornell). There's also a "swap video and shared screen" button when viewing someone else's screen share, but I'm not sure what that would do to the recording (if the participant records instead of the host), I haven't tested it.

    Hi, I just found you on RUclips and like how you explain things. I use Zoom and do screenshare and record my class. I like the Gallery view of the students and I move them to the top of my screen. When I look at the recording the students video are vertical in the middle of the screen not on horizontal on the top as I saw them. How can I get the recording to have them on the top horizontally or to the far right vertically?

    • @BenFinio

      Hi Dodie - if you are doing local recording on a single computer I am not sure if that will work, I think it will still record gallery view. At 3:17 in this video I switch to gallery view without ever canceling the spotlight, and the recording still shows gallery view. If you have a Pro account there is an option in cloud recording to record speaker and gallery view to separate video files, so you could use that. If you have a second monitor you can also do it with that, I have a video about that here: ruclips.net/video/qvoXMStoNcw/видео.html

    Good video, Ben Thanks. I tried recording separate files for speaker (me) and gallery view, but the video for the speaker view was not very high quality while the gallery view video was sharp. How do I get a clear recording of speaker view?

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  2 года назад +1

      Hi - unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do. The actual resolution of your video in Zoom will generally be lower than the max resolution of your webcam due to bandwidth limitations (on Zoom's end, even if you have good high speed internet yourself). So everyone looks OK in gallery view since the individual camera views are pretty small, but when you blow one up to full screen in speaker view it looks grainy.

      @@BenFinio Thank you. I do a lot of videos with a professional-quality camcorder for my online kung-fu school (I have live classes on Zoom also). Some students don't want to see themselves on the video replays, which have always been gallery view. In the classes, I demonstrate movements and correct the students who attend the live class. Instead of recording these sessions in gallery mode or low-quality speaker view, I'm just going to set up my camcorder to get a clean feed of me during the live classes and use that as the replay. Thanks for helping me reach this conclusion.

      @@KenGullette for what it's worth - that is such a common request from people doing fitness classes that I made a separate video about it: ruclips.net/video/Wc87YQk-RQs/видео.html. BUT that doesn't resolve the quality issue. If you want a good HD video of yourself then you're right that it's probably better to just do it with a separate camera.

    A bit off topic, but I'm trying to use Zoom out from the HDMI port of a laptop to go into an HDMI input of an ATEM Mini Pro video switcher for live streaming a video podcast. I've done a little experimenting, and set Zoom to Dual monitor. Can't quite figure out how to get what I hope to.
    Basically I want to show out the HDMI port what I guess would be the split screen Gallery View of me and one remote guest, THEN be able to toggle to just the guest only on screen, no thumbnail of my video, then back to the two shot when desired. I want to hopefully do this without outputting any controls showing, maybe with keyboard shortcuts. I was hopeful that I could keep the controls on the laptop screen, then just have the video output like I wanted on the "second monitor", which, of course, would be the input feed to the switcher, but this doesn't seem to work. With dual monitor deactivated I can just drag the instance of Zoom over to the HDMI output, but that's not desired.
    I hope this was clear and made sense. I appreciate any info or tips.

      Hi - sorry, I have a bunch of three-week old comments that I never got notifications about for some reason. To the best of my knowledge you can't get rid of that box, Zoom puts it there automatically. If (as the host) you spotlight yourself or a certain participant, you could at least get it to stay in one place instead of moving around as Zoom automatically tries to determine who the active speaker is.

    I might have already posted this question, but wasn't sure ... so forgive me for doing so again. I recorded a 2.5 hour interview on zoom and the sound and picture are out of sync. Were you doing a cloud or local recording? Unfortunately I'm not sure what you can do about that in advance, it might depend on your computer (local) or your internet connection (cloud). If you are using an organization's Zoom license I would contact your IT department. I had a similar problem at Cornell with different screen recording software called Panopto. IT was able to fix it after the fact, but I'm not sure what the root cause of the problem was.

    I give vocal training online, so in a 1-on-1 situation it's important that both of us appear on the recording. I set it to gallery, with us next to each other, but the recording jumps between us, mostly NOT catching the important moments from each side, probably because it follows the "speaker" - often singing - and is generally too late as the exercises are brief and require immediate imitation! How can I get zoom to leave it alone? Would really appreciate help on this. Thanks!

      Could other people hear you during the meeting? If so, unfortunately I'm not sure why the audio wouldn't show up in the recording. The "share computer audio" checkbox is a separate feature that allows you to share audio being played from your computer's speakers (e.g. a song playing on your computer) in addition to the sound detected by your microphone.

I don't see it while I am recording but it shows up after I record and there are 5-6 little dropdown boxes that block my power point presentation. This problem only happens with the recorded videos. Hi Ben, is there a way to record the gallery view but hide your screen or someone else's screen from the recording itself, so only select screens are recorded in the gallery view. As in, say someone is recording an interview between two other people and wants to do a gallery view but doesn't want their screen to show, just the interviewer and interviewee.

    • @BenFinio
      @BenFinio  3 года назад

      Hi Michael - you could mute your own video and then select "hide non video participants," or right click yourself and select "hide self view." The downside is that then people won't be able to see you in the live meeting either. There is a new multi-pin and multi-spotlight feature: ruclips.net/video/RZIn9AxSRrU/видео.html so you could try spotlighting only the people you want recorded, although I have not tried this. In order to test it you can just log in to the same meeting on multiple devices (that's how I do these tutorials) or get some family/friends to join.

      Hi Paul - your best bet is to do cloud recording and enable the option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views to separate video files. Then you could use post processing/third party video editing software to combine them however you want. However, this option may be disabled depending on your organization or Zoom license. It's disabled at the admin level for me at Cornell, I can't turn it on.
