I just went to Guadalupe to scope out a fishing spot and came across 7 dead sea lions. Two were on their way out stargazing on their back with heads weaving. It was really sad so i left my fishing pole in the car knowing something was wrong. Around 20 people fishing not recognizing the signs. 2 surfers in that water as well. Talked to the rangers and verified the crisis. Went home.

from The Marine Mammal Center "Domoic acid is produced during certain harmful algal bloom events by a type of algae called Pseudo-nitzschia australis. This neurotoxin accumulates in small fish, like sardines and anchovies, which are then eaten by marine mammals like sea lions in large quantities."

So why were they exposed? Some sort of spill, or runoff?

caused by algae bloom, and ingested through food chain.

Algal poising. Went fishing and the beach had 7 dead lions and 2 were on their way out weaving staring at the sky. It was really really sad. 2 surfers there without a brain should be fine tho.

Just one beach. Guadalupe dunes had 7 dead lions and two were weaving like they were on acid. It was ugly. That was 2 hours ago. Talked to the rangers because it didn't seem right. Yeah I left my fishing pole in the car. I had no idea this was happening but recognized something was really really wrong.
