As a South African, this match was painful to watch, but looking back on the match and watching Japan until the 2019 world cup, I’m in love with the Japanese play style.
Imagine that this country offers one of the most amazing masculine and feminine football as well. I'm glad to see them getting better and better at "Western" sports, this is healthy for those collective sports.
I’ve asked the bookies for odds on ireland being out by the quarters for every RWC in the next 16 years (until I retire), none of them will take the bet.......
I am a Neath boy...Living in Japan. I was at the 2 2013 games,,,,,The Hanazono test had the best atmosphere of any game I have ever seen. I took my young half Japanese son to both of the games. Fast forward to the RWC game against Ireland. We went with several Japanese friends to the Wales v Georgia, Uruguay and the Japanese and ireland game,,,, My son Taiki and I had so much pleasure from that one....Squidge,,,,I am a neath boy through and through but dear God,,,the emotion after that game was incredible!! As always, thank you for your videos.
His World Cup record is amazing though. 2003: Australia in final 2007: South Africa win 2015: Japan the best team to not make it to the knock outs. (more wins than any other non-qualifying team in history) 2019: England in final Like him or not, you can't argue with those facts...
the ultimate underdog that everyone loves, the team that is everyone's favorite after there home team. If you are feeling low and you have too much on your mind, remember how japan achieved to beat south africa and it will help you go on
imagine I live in Brighton and could have got tickets to see this match, but my Dad thought it would just be a blowout and an uninteresting watch, so he bought tickets to Samoa vs USA on the next day. Still haven't talked to him since
That is nothing LOL my misses was waiting in her flat in LEWES To give birth to our First Born! And as I was watching game in BiH I was on a WhatsApp with her! AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR THE RAAAR OF A CROWD AS THEY WERE GOING MENTAL AT THE PLAYSE 😂!! I think that was a amazing game by Japan. I think it is time you FORGIVE YOUR FATHER!! And move on IM SHORE HE STILL BEATS HIM SELF UP COS OF THAT DECISION!!!
Funny enough i was working in Lewes tha day and dumped the van freshfield just round the corner from their base at brighton collage. Went on the p*** ended up in west street at the Walkabout the whole place was watching and it exploded. Like Mardi Gras afterwards so surprising.
Yeah I will always regret not getting tickets or even watching the game. I am from Brighton and had just moved back from university. I was working at my parents restaurant and didn't event think about tickets. Worst part is I was born in Japan and am part Japanese so have always been a blossoms supporter. Still annoys me that I didn't even think to check the game out
Not all of them but a couple. I'm thinking he needs to make a book, website, real compilations vid... do something where all these quotes & stills can be seen because I'm not even that old but way too tired of pausing anymore on his level
It's pretty much all from Eddie Jones' autobiography chapters where he outlines his entire coaching history with Japan and their defeat of South Africa (It's a great read). Squidge just puts it into perspective in such a brilliant way (Alongside his other research too!).
David had a sling, i.e. the most technologically advanced ranged weapon at the time. One crack to the forehead and Goliath was dead as a dodo. Edit: maybe this explains Japan well too, they had amazing preparation. Edit 2: haven't heard many people actually say this about D v G so I'm glad you did.
Aweome video dude. Japan is everyones second favorate team, there epic to watch and were amazing hosts. i hope you carry on with this topic untill present day
WC 2019, Rassie and Siya have finally made this wound start to heal for me as a Saffa. I can actually sit back and dig into this now where before I would have skipped straight over this one :)
Now that we are champions I can laugh it off. Was traumatizing at the time though I won't lie. I stopped watching the Boks for a while after that loss.
Next week! Damn it... that was really entertaining, enlightening and charming. Thank you as ever, have missed your videos so very much. keep up the amazing work.
Great video from a bok fan amazing how u put these things together with zero bias a real professional better than most analysts on fox sports or supersport
Squidge and Two Cents rugby put up a video and I stop work to watch knowing it will be worth the catch up later.. I tried to get tickets for this game and even drove 250 miles to stay in Brighton in case there were returns. Ended up in a bar with a mate and both SA and Japanese supporters watching it unfold. The Saffas rightly confident, and the Japanese supporters happy to be there. The atmosphere during the game rivalled my watching England win in 2003, and that's not something I ever expected to happen. We spent the 24hours after the game in shock, while getting irresponsibly inebriated consoling Saffas and bowing in total respect to any Japanese we came across.
As a South African this match is always hard to watch/remember - it broke the boks and it took Rassie to fix us. But damn if Eddie Jones didn't do something amazing with Japanese rugby! I'm eagerly awaiting the 2nd video.
It is the only Springbok loss I can bear reminiscing. Most of the times. In hindsight, the devastating yet honourable loss against Japan's supreme bravery in 2015 made the Bokke's successful RWC 2019 campaign more than epic. Beating Japan in the QF and Eddie Jones (and England as a bonus) in the final.
I remeber watching that game live for no other reason than it being on between two games I wanted to see. I didn't actually start paying attentin until 20 minutes before the end and it was nail biting stuff once I realized what was happening
1:13 Buster Douglas v. Mike Tyson was 42/1 and some places wouldn't even take bets on Tyson. Japan to beat SA... 80/1. Incredible pay day for some brave soul!
I was in Cardiff in 2004 when Wales beat (an admittedly understrength) Japan 98-0. They've certainly come a long way since then. They're a great team to watch. Unfortunately I missed the game in 2015 as I was moving house on that day. When my friend sent me a text to say that Japan had won, I thought he was just taking the piss!
Correction. That Springbok side was not at all well coached. We had a coach who was trying to recreate a game plan from his past, with a team from the SA Rugby past and who was not even capable of getting his own players to adhere to the plan. After the game, several veterans including Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger and Bismarck du Plessis were mentioned as refusing to follow the game plan and thereby costing us the game. The selections were odd with a severely emaciated Jean de Villiers fresh back from injury and clearly unfit, taking over from Damian de Allende who was in the form of his life yet did not even make the bench. Kolisi was originally put on the bench as cover for flank, but when Willem Alberts was withdrawn at the 11th hour, Kolisi stayed on the bench and Pieter-Steph du Toit leapfrogged him from 'not playing' straight into the starting lineup, in a role he was not familiar with. At the time, PSDT was not a flanker but a second rower and it is interesting to note that two years after this, Coetzee was defending the fact that he (Coetzee) was selecting PSDT out of position at flank. It was not until Rassie arrived that PSDT became effective in that role. It was a tough time for SA Rugby, due to get worse when Meyer was replaced by Coetzee, and would only improve when Rassie was finally given the reins.
I remember people saying it was going to be 100+ win for us. I countered with the facts that our line up for the particular match was very ad hoc, with the Eddie Jones factor, Jerome Garces factors too boot and the fact Japan was winning tier 1 nations that year (albeit at home to a Wales B team). I remember a poster telling me to put my money where my mouth was as the odds were 100/1. I should've just done it. But I countered that I certainly did not expect Japan to win but a 20 point margin was more reasonable than a 100. Missed opportunity there..
The Boks were a mess leading up to this game, still favored to win but were not in a good space. I hope you talk about this. But as a South African I can't be mad at this video or the actual match. We needed it to spark what was needed to ultimately lose a close one to NZ
I went to this game, and I remember speaking to a South African dad with his kid on the train, which was his first South Africa game. We all said to them, that it should be an easy win for them. I still wonder how disappointed they were at the end of the game
If refs commanded the game like its supposed to be more teams would have to play the Japanese style as opposed to the new Exeter off your feet at the ruck style. God bless the underdog
If you wanted to get really technical about it, Zimbabwe only qualified for one World Cup, as the participating nations in the inaugural edition were invited.
According to Malcolm Gladwell, David was always gonna beat Goliath... it's gets distorted because of the size issue. But David had a long distance weapon kinda like a sniper rifle of the time and Goliath depended on close combat. David only got close after the killer blow to cut off Goliaths head! David was always gonna win that fight! (I just realized you mentioned Gladwell Later in the video I originally wrote this comment when you first mentioned D v G).
Thanks @squidge - brought back memories of a fantastic day for all of us!! Shameless plug time: Anyone in London wanting to play rugby the Japanese way, hit us up! ljrfc.co.uk or ljrfcenquiries@gmail.com
This game turned me from a casual rugby viewer to a proper fan starting my proper love of the sport
As a South African, this match was painful to watch, but looking back on the match and watching Japan until the 2019 world cup, I’m in love with the Japanese play style.
Sam here, I was pulling my hair out in 2015 but they fully deserved that win
Same. I admire the Blossoms greatly.
Hope they never beat us again though. Unless they beat everyone of course. That would be something, Brave Blossoms, world champions.
I'm the same when they beat Ireland.
Imagine that this country offers one of the most amazing masculine and feminine football as well.
I'm glad to see them getting better and better at "Western" sports, this is healthy for those collective sports.
'Or playing Ireland in a match with the label Quarter Final' - god, it hurts that this is so true
Right in the feels....
I'm Irish but I did giggle
i couldn't see the game that morning, but did it cross the back of my mind that japan were in a better place than ireland pre-match? ..ye
I’ve asked the bookies for odds on ireland being out by the quarters for every RWC in the next 16 years (until I retire), none of them will take the bet.......

Eddie Jones is a guy who is somehow hard to like and impossible to hate.
His World Cup record is amazing though.
2003: Australia in final
2007: South Africa win
2015: Japan the best team to not make it to the knock outs. (more wins than any other non-qualifying team in history)

Like him or not, you can't argue with those facts...
10:14 I love the 19-84 joke 😂😂😂😂😂
It's exactly 12 points more on both sides than the actual score
I didn't realise how much I was supposed to love Fumi Tanaka before this video but he's iconic
the ultimate underdog that everyone loves, the team that is everyone's favorite after there home team. If you are feeling low and you have too much on your mind, remember how japan achieved to beat south africa and it will help you go on
I wonder if Eddie Jones thinks it’s rugby
This is the first time I've liked a vid before watching, and boy that is a decision I did NOT regret
As a South African, this crushed me BUT damn...it was beautiful to watch! Loved it!
20:52 Explains why we keep seeing Ben Youngs in the England team under Jones.
I thought the exact same thing.
As in he's not good enough but he got in at the beginning so he's staying in?
Jones may change tacks after reading a book in which Gladwell would have tested the 10,000 hour premise against the sunk-costs fallacy.
You know it's pretty nice for this video to come out this morning and not yesterday evening, this makes it your birthday present to me.
Happy Birthday!!! Hope you’re having a wonderful day, and you’re spot on, I made it entirely for you

Top video. Your video style matches Japan's playing style really well.
That bit with Eddy talking about rugby made the word rugby sound funny

One of my biggest regrets: turning down a ticket to watch Japan v South Africa in my home town of Brighton as I thought it was would be a whitewash

Spot on. No apologies needed for cultural stereotyping. Have yourself a Battenberg cake break before getting onto Part II.
