Has 1320Video Negatively Changed Our Perception of Horsepower?

  • 1320Video is one of the most pervasive youtube channels in cars and has made an direct impact on how the layman views cars. With 1000HP cars everywhere people have come to accept it as an easy feat when in actuality it isn't even close to easy. We can glean from BoostedBoiz what it actually takes to build fast car, but how?

    Remember when the average HP you saw on the streets was in the 400 range if not a little more? Something about those days seemed more wholesome if you ask me but maybe I'm looking at things through nostalgia glasses. 700 HP is about all you can use on the street maximum. Anything else more than that and you are talking track use only. The internet has given the perception like you said of 1000 plus horsepower cars are floating around everywhere when that is not the case.
    I don't know about y'all but I'm a fan of being able to use my entire powerband instead of only a limited portion because I may have too much power for what I'm doing. The difference between a fast build and a great build is something a lot of people have forgotten I feel - balance. If you've ever been behind the wheel of something and told yourself "wow this thing is perfect" then you know what I'm talking about.

      I don't believe stuff like "it was more wholesome" While social media has positive and negative aspects you can have as much power as you can put down on the road. Boost by Gear is one way, but one of many ways to get the power down in a FWD car. You have to move your pride out of the way to learn though. Going fast is a fairly simple math equation if you know the weight of your car with you in it.

    As an FD owner, I can agree with everything you said. The 20B question is often the first question people ask (although I get to tell them 'no, but my cosmo does).
    But I also think youtube (and youtubers) have changed the precepton of exotic cars. People just assume everyone should have the means to buy one. And hell, even when someone has one, you can hear kids that will never have the means, say things like: 'yeah, but its not a [insert super-expensive, ultra exclusive model here].

    I totally agree and I think this is very translatable to any aspect of life. It's easy to see something that someone has made/done that is incredible, figure out the shortest path to replicate that and think if you do it you'll be in the same position. But usually when someone has done something remarkable, it's taken a while lot of time, learning and experience to do so!
    Great videos, keep em coming :)

    This is one of the hardest things for me to wrap my head around. As someone relatively new to the car scene, seeing all these big name cars and huge numbers gives me the aspiration to one day achieve such a feat. However, it’s also had a hugely negative impact on my own life similar to what you talked about. Everything I do or build now seems to not be good enough to my own self because I see these others around me and feel as if what I’m doing is almost saddening.
    I do understand that also comes with my own issue about comparing myself to others and I need to work on that so that I can take pride in my own personal achievements and milestones I reach.

    • @dj4monie

      Depends on what you're building for. I often find there is no reason behind a build other than validation from strangers. My goal is to run faster than 12.74, I've already beaten my person best trap speed which is now 111 mph. My goal is actual faster than that, much faster, we'l see what 2020 brings.

    Ppl don't realize how expensive it is ( unless your an engine builder yourself or have some sort of Mechanical know-how ) to build these things. Having a 20b/26b/5Rotor DEF separates you from the usual 10a/12a/13b Fanatics, I rmbr back in 1997 when the FIRST road registered/legal 20bT Car was built in New Zealand! That shit set the Bar HIGH, but it came at such a huge cost ( apparently over 100k at that time ) bc nobody had done this type of conversion into a HB Cosmo - let alone aftermarket parts with alllll the extra engine bells and whistles...
    Jump thru into 2019 and builders will STILL charge you an arm and a leg for a 20b/26b Engine lol

    Having driven a few high power cars, I find the lower power ones more fun for driving. It's not much fun driving in twisty roads with walls, cliffs, and trees and being on a razor edge when pushing it a bit. I would rather have lots of mechanical grip and enough power to help rotate a car in the curves but not so much the throttle is almost dangerous to press. Depending on the car, 200-400hp seems to be about the sweet spot. But, I am not trying to set world records or drag race. I am also not trying to impress anyone. Just loving the feel of tearing through the curves and catching perfect gear changes. But, that is me. And I am not normal. Apparently.

      @nice1149ss 5 лет назад

      I was about to say the samething. Even going to autocross on a family car can be fun when you are on the limit. Most thrill people have is from accelartion and it is cheaper to have good brakes or lateral accelaration by turning than accelarating by engine power.

    i have a BMW e46 325i as my first adventure. supposedly has 192 crank hp but with the mileage and yet not serviced vanos probably is more like 130 to the wheels. Seems pretty good for now, the plan is to take it back to its former glory and maybe a bit more. the goal for now is to crack the 200hp mark. those ridiculous 700 800 1000 horse power numbers are just on a different level and i don't see the need of that in my life

    I couldn’t agree more, if I had a dollar everytime I’ve had someone ask me if I’m gonna LS swap my Miata or my Rx8 I’d be a millionaire, LS swaps are so common online with these cars... it’s disappointing, everytime I have to explain that you have to swap out the harness, ecu, subframe, transmission, clutch, driveshaft, differential, axles, suspension, brakes, new transmission tunnel, fuel lines, fuel pump, and much more, it’s sad to recognize that many people think it’s such an easy thing to do to obtain big horsepower numbers, you couldn’t have said it better my man, and honestly that much power is really just spin city... better to learn on your power train you got, then get a daily and a budget...

    • @FloorItDuh
      @FloorItDuh 5 лет назад

      I'm a V8 guy and even then I would tell you to keep your RX8 rotary. Rotaries are a dying breed. It's nice to see one around. I think part of the problem is so many people are caught onto cliches that originally start with some big channel or shop they see and then think if they can do it that easily I surely can. Like you said that's not the case. People have no idea how involved it is to do an engine swap and actually have it work right. People have no idea how expensive and difficult it can be to do something like go from an automatic or manual.
      Every time I hear someone say something like what you mentioned I seriously wonder if they've ever been under a hood or turned a wrench.
