【SSB4】Optimising Fox: Movement

- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Hey guys. If you ask the average player why Fox is good, the answer you'll most commonly receive is "he's fast". While this doesn't tell the whole story, it IS true that Fox is, indeed, pretty fast.
With this in mind, I thought it would be good to make a video detailing all of the different options Fox has - both universal techniques and movements more specific to him. I don't recommend just mindlessly spamming movement but be aware when each of these techniques can give you the pressure you require. Hope you enjoy =]

Wow! Great video! Had no idea that the chargeless up smash tech existed
Ooh, Fancy!
Great guide, didn't know about the chargeless up smash thing!
Can't wait for more :)
+Stygian/Silver Thanks, glad it helped =]
+Tesla Skarfelt sorry I did not understand that part... how do you do it then? run jump-cancel plus up stick + attack button? what about the grab button thing? thank you!
While running, input jump, up and grab. It's basically a jump cancelled Up Smash but you hit grab instead of attack. Hope that helped!
awesome video! I'm a Little Mac main searching for a great secondary and this video inspired me to use Fox, thanks dude! and keep up the good work.
Little Mac is also very movement based so I'm sure you'll pick up Fox in no time! Thanks =]
Thanks a ton, movement is certainly my weakest point (plus mindgame...hurh) that really helps.
Love this, keep it up. Add buttons on screen to explain better who are just starting out, or try to speak a bit more clearly. As someone who just learned how to autocancel short hop up-airs reliably without using a shoulder button - I have a tip. Try clawing. Hit Y with your index finger to jump and just immediately c-stick up with your thumb. It takes a bit of practice to switch hand positions fast, but like anything, it becomes muscle memory in no time.
+Robiin I know that Larry Lurr does that, actually! I do it in Melee for Up Throw Up Air against floaties.
I'll try to speak a bit slower, one of the reasons I wanted to do this was to try and help with my voice, actually. A few people have said that I speak too quickly and that going over the basics might help a bit so I'll take that into account. Thanks!
+Tesla Skarfelt Larry was the one who told me actually, asked for tips in his stream chat. So definitely got that from him!
Nice tutorial, great commentary! Next you should do a "how to get bodied by my marth" tutorial!
+PurpleToaster Money match me Lucina vs Marth I will body you
how much?
£500000000
idk wanna just go 10 euro
i'm down
Love it, please do more
+Nick Gitty I will do! =]
Great video, definitely keeping this for later
Maybe you should add the button inputs in the corner when talking about what inputs to press. Also maybe you could speak a bit clearer, to me it seems a bit jumbled and quick. Otherwise, great tutorial 🔥
I hope more videos of fox arrives soon!!!
+Neokrus They will arrive!
...Just not sure when... takes a while to make ^^;
I didn't even know you could use the grab button to do a running upsmash. I always used Jump.
I started using Fox yesterday and I'm already going competitive with him without watching this video or any videos I was actually already fighting lvl 9 bots
Hey Sonic fireball here asking how did you create a great video
Great video! I don't know but I can't do extended dance trotting with Fox. I can get get it constantly with Marth, ganon and even characters I don't main but with fox.. I just can't seem to get the timing right. I can foxtrot, perfect pivot and do every else but that. Any tips? greetings from Panamá!
+DarkFox2071 Glad you enjoyed the video!
If you're having trouble visualising the correct window, I'd recommend going to a stage like Battlefield and rolling to the ledge. Do a dash to shield towards the centre and take note of where you are in relation to the ground and platform. Roll back to the ledge and try foxtrotting at the same point that your dash to shield worked.
Honestly, Fox's is pretty fast and kind of awkward. It took me quite a while to get it down. If you can get some kind of tool for visualisation, it'd probably help your timing out a lot. I used the BF platform but you could also use things that stand out on other stages. Hope that helped!
I looove this i just wish his extended dash dance was as easy as falcon or macs its so hard for me to get used 2
+TheAffablestraws if u see this if u ever update a hand cam would help so much u wouldn't believe
+TheAffablestraws Yeah, Fox's dash dance is actually pretty awkward. I play Lucina on the side so Fox's dash dance always upset me compared to hers.
I don't have the ability to do a handcam with my current equipment but that's a good idea that I'll look into for the future. No promises, though. Thanks =]
Good video. Fast talking though. Overall great!
+geihjin I'll work on that for next time. Thanks =]
This is nice! I was wondering if you could do some friendlies at some point. I am in the Fox discord chat as well.
+Might as Well Call This Channel Just Austin I don't really like playing Fox online but I'd be up for playing some games with other characters at some point. Sorry about that. Glad you liked the video =]
+Tesla Skarfelt I do have a question though, I find it hard to get kills sometimes with fox as he loses to shield, How would I get around this?
I'll tell you right when I figure it out, haha. Fox definitely gets shield camped SUPER hard at high %. However, they can't win by just holding R so look for an opportunity to get an Up Tilt to Up Air or whatever. Back Air is also really good. You don't need to fish for Up Smashes and setups to Up Smash - just wait for the opportunity to present itself. If you're equal on stocks, value survival over killing.
When you're behind, though, it becomes a real struggle to keep your head in the game and get that kill. It's probably the thing I struggle the most with =[
+Tesla Skarfelt I also can't do autocancel back air in one spot, It tends to move me back. You know how I can prevent this?
+Tesla Skarfelt Also while I am at it, what is the control scheme you use for fox?
Hey, nice vid, I've been taking my fox secondary more seriously recently and this was a nice help. I was wondering if you could answer a question for me about Fox since you're so knowledgeable. I've been working on auto-cancelling my up airs so I can juggle better with them, do you have tips on this? I thought it was possible with short hops, but I can't seem to get them, I can only really do it after a full hop. Any tips on optimizing them? Thanks for your time!
Hi! Glad the video was helpful.
When doing Up Airs, you have to input the Up Air a few frames after leaving the ground from a Short Hop. Pressing Y then moving down to the c-stick in just a few frames is extremely difficult so there are some other ways to do it.
You can just simply press X then hold up and hit A at the right timing, being careful to not Up Smash. If your c-stick is set to tilt, you can use the claw method to jump with your index finger and push the c-stick up with your thumb. What I do is set L to jump and short hop by pressing up on the analogue stick while pressing L and buffering an Up Air during jump squat - so basically L, analogue stick up and c-sstick up all at the same time.
Unless you have stick set to tilt, though, there's not going to be an easy way to do Up Airs and even then it'll take practice. It's definitely possible from a short hop so I'm afraid all I can recommend is grinding them out in training mode.
+Tesla Skarfelt Thanks a bunch! I'll try this out when I get home, I'd really like to optimize my game.
+Tesla Skarfelt Still practicing my up airs, but I just had a thought. There is no video on Fox's up air that I've found on YT, but you have a pretty good video on his dair. If you wanted to, you could expand on his aerials and do a video on his up air also. Entirely your decision though.
I've been interested in doing a combined video on Up Tilt and Up Air because the moves go hand in hand so well. I'm not making any videos for the moment, though, but it's on my list for sure =]
I miss those days
me and you both, bud
great video! how do you do a jump cancel up smash with the grab button?
While running, jump + up + grab at the same time
Not sure you said this in the video but how do you exactly do you practice fox trotting and what is the best control set to do so?
There's no control scheme that makes foxtrotting easier. I just practiced it by doing seeing how long one was and then trying to do it over and over again using visual cues in the background to help (for example, one foxtrot is the length of a Battlefield platform).
Do you recommend having tap to jump on for playing fox? I find it hard to autocancel aerials because I am used to playing with it off
+Ryan Hawkins I personally don't use it but I know plenty of Foxes that do. It's down to personal preference. For autocancelling aerials with tap jump off, check out this video:
ruclips.net/video/KHqg3k_XAug/видео.html
I use this technique for Up Airs.
Great video I've been looking to work on my movement in neutral to improve my gameplay but can you help me out with something? When I try dancetrotting with fox, I'm having a much harder time than I would with some others like mac, falcon, marth, etc. Sometimes when I try with fox, I end up doing an initial dash followed by a perfect pivot. My second movement comes out as a perfect pivot rather than dashdancing in the opposite direction. Can you help me to get rid of this issue? Or maybe a part 2 to this video would be fantastic in which you could go into further detail.
I definitely find it much harder to dancetrot on Fox compared to my Lucina but I've not heard of that PP issue before. Maybe you're not pushing the opposite direction fast enough?
I think a part 2 to this video with applications in neutral could be a good call but I'd like to gain a bit more gameplay experience myself first.
I´ve encountered the same problematic with my Fox and also perceive it as much easier to dancetrott with my other mains such as Cpt. Falcon and Marth. I recommend trying out a Biduou Control setup (I use the Gamecube Controller). After a dozen lost stocks I´ve slowly come to terms with it. My Smash Corner covers this topic brilliantly.
the dash dance shouldn't be done so quickly
instead of
forward, flick back as fast as you can, (perfect pivot)
it's
forward, and quickly hold back
(but make sure you don't hold it for too long)
skarfelt how do I multishine in tr4sh?
You hold down
Press B
LRA + Start -> Melee
Tesla Skarfelt thanks for giving me a virus
lul, but actually you can if you spam down b while on a spring
hey dude it's me again :)
can I ask which buttons do u use for this fast back air's? :D
Um, not sure what I can tell. I literally just hit Y to jump then move my thumb to the c-stick for the Back Air. It's fast but you can get used to it for sure.
wow ok I tried this with X and c-stick (left/right) but basically I use X + A + left Stick (right/left).
but I think u play this C-stick back airs with an claw-crap?
(why I ask all these things is... I try to get fit for some tournaments here in germany and sometimes I think my button set playstyle with tapjump or my back air button-style is not good to become a good player.... :/ )
I'am not bad in this game I think but sometimes when I watch a fight of you or larry lurr is: I see is a faster gaming style then me... this scared me :D
btw I like how u play this game. It's amazing!
thanks anway for help.
I don't use claw at all, I just move my thumb. You can use X too, I just personally jump with Y.
ok thanks hope u did read the rest... I changed somethin in ma last comment :D
u helped me alot^^
I somehow didn't see the rest of your comment, sorry!
I think that control scheme is entirely personal preference. If you can do the inputs, stick with tap jump if you want!
In Germany, there's a Fox that's better than me called Sodrek, see if you can get games with him some time.
Thanks for all the kind words, I appreciate it =]
fox top tier
+Jacky Ho He might be higher than Top 30 but idk yet
Controller setup?
+José Leonardo (LinkNine) I use L for jump, C-Stick to attack, Tap jump off. I also use X to shield but that's specifically to give me an easier time doing short hop airdodge on Lucina.
L to jump is so I can buffer aerials on the c-stick - moving between Y and c-stick would be too difficult to do that fast.
tfw you practice movement, re watch this and decide you're 1% there
im not able to do an upsmash with the grab button, is there something i'm missing?
+我嘞个去 You have to make sure that you're inputting grab while in jumpsquat. Jump then input Up and Grab almost immediately.
Hey Tesla, i have a question for you. Is fox easy to play? It's not that i want to pick up fox, i am actually a fox main with alot of result in my region (1st on my pr) and i do alot of trick with him. But i have two other people that play him too and just rush in without thinking and they still succed so i was asking myself if fox is easy to play or not :/
I think it's kind of a weird question. Like a lot of Smash 4 characters, Fox has some totally braindead tools that make him easy to pick up and do things with - Up Tilt/Up Air combos and frame traps are totally broken and his stupidly quick frame data allows him to punish so much it's kind of absurd.
That said, I think that as you play better players, his weaknesses in neutral start to present themselves. Don't get me wrong, Fox still has an extremely strong neutral, but it becomes more challenging than simply running at your opponent I think. Fox lacks range and he lacks moves that are safe on shield which becomes more problematic as you play against people able to deal with Fox's speed.
Overall, I'd say my answer is yes. It's kind of hard for me to gauge from a critical standpoint - I can like ONLY play Fox so he's easy for me and everybody else is hard - but I'd say overall he's more difficult to get results with the better you get at the game. He's still awesome and extremely overpowered, of course, but you get my point.
Yes i get your point. Easy to pick up, Hard to master him. Thank you for this answer. Glory to fox! And by the way, just wanted to know. What is your region PR? i want to check out your game and how u play different match up. :)
imgur.com/a/oDjhE
We don't get a lot of streams in Ireland but you can check out Celtic Throwdown for our most recent footage. That tournament also had a UK player over called Khanage, the sets between me and him are probably the best I personally played.
Personally, I don't care about my PR because I know my region is very weak in the grand scheme of things and I just want to get better and travel rather than focusing on beating people locally. As it is, there's only one player better than me right now but focusing too much effort on him would be very taxing (he's beaten me 13 sets this year lol...) so just focusing on making myself better is a more reasonable goal IMO.
Nice i will check it out! Thank you and i hope to see you one day in a national against me! (If u come to north america) And continue uploading that kind of video. they are inspiring!
Is using Z for the jump canceled up smash really faster than using up+A? Like between those two ways of jump canceling the up smash is one actually faster than the other???
+Tanner Anderson Pressing Z means that Up Smash comes out on the first frame of charging. The only way for Up and A to be faster is if you pressed A for one frame which is possible but hard.
+Tesla Skarfelt Thanks for the clarification! Thanks for the advanced detail/info in this tutorial. Cant Wait for the next video!
Glad you enjoyed! I'm working on the next one now but they take a lot of time due to my poor setup I currently have. I'll hopefully have it out soon, though!
what are some good lab drills for mastering these movements?
Robert Gotengco perfect pivot until you develop arthritis
foxtrot a bunch,
when you reach a side, dash dance back and repeat
Skarfelt, what controls do you use for fox?
L to Jump, X to shield, Tilt stick, tap jump off. L is for Up Airs, X is for powershields and perfect pivot shields, Tilt stick is for combos, tap jump off is preference.
L to jump because you use double sticking or because you can empty-shorthop with L? Thanks for the guides by the way :)
Rocking mango melee color
You use Tilt stick to do nairs, and you use grab to do smash attacks..... do you ever use your A button???
Most of my full hop rising aerials are with A as it's quicker unless i find it convenient to use a shoulder button instead. Rising retreating Nair is with A, for example. I also think I use it when RAR'ing but honestly couldn't tell you, it's just muscle memory lol. Using the A button for aerials is generally suboptimal though as you lack horizontal control while doing them!
Tesla Skarfelt Ahh okay, One last question. Do you Claw grip your controller(Use index finger to press X or Y)??? Or do you just use the shoulder button for short hops?
I alternate between pressing Y and L for short hops based on the situation, I never claw as I find it too uncomfortable.
perfect pivots aren't a huge part of neutral, that's where you're wrong kiddo, perfect pivots off of a foxtrot is one of the best approach bait tactics while keeping your options open, and spacing all your ground options, but then again no one is using perfect pivots consistently and on the fly to be able to show this, so no judgement on the misinformation...
IamJecht he's probably older than you lmao
I'm still able to perfect pivot ten times in a row with months of no smash bros
Non Johns once you learn it, I feel like you can always do it. Im the same.
Meh perfect pivots are of kind optional for fox. His neutral is already👌 .
this is not even 1/8th of what fox can do in melee
+blooflazh7 I play Fox in Melee too =]
You talk a little too fast for me :x
That or your mic just might not be clear enough
Yeah, I talk really quickly unfortunately. I've started using subtitles on my newer videos, from the tech chase one onwards. =]
+Tesla Skarfelt Cool, I still picked up on most of what you said though. Helpful vid, thanks man :D
Glad it helped! Cheers =]
