Sweet! When I was a kid we used to watch snowmobiles skip open water upstream from my house. I remember the first one I ever saw sank it. It was only 2-3 feet deep and we randomly had a length of rope so he walked back out and tied it on so we could help pull it out. One of his buddies drove him home to change and then he came back and worked on it until it fired back up. Sometimes you get lucky and live and sometimes you get even luckier and so does your sled.
I worked in a small engine shop and that was my job the second year I worked for them. I had to disassemble and clean two Polaris snowmobiles that had gone to the bottom. The sad part was the drivers drown. The family requested both sleds be repaired and sold as a fund raiser to pay funeral costs. Insurance doesn't cover snowmobiles dropped through the ice. Be cause of possible rust issues, I moved quickly to remove parts and drop those parts in a tub of WD40. WD is a water displacer. The oiler system and fuel system had to be drained and flushed. The exaust had to be drained and flushed with WD. The seats were water logged but because I did upholstery with a friend( not at the time) we sent the seats to him to have him properly dry them out. It took me a week to do each sled. There was sand and silt in both engines so They had to be cleaned really well. I got paid separately for my part because I was subbed out by the shop. They told me they couldn't have done it because they were already busy. It gave me the creeps thinking two guys died riding those machines.
My two cents is a yes and a no. Yes theoretically you might be able to learn how to skip on certain sleds, but big touring machines I’d imagine make poor skippers. Best to just think twice and inquire about ice thickness before going on ice.
In the late 1960's, 2 of my cousins went through the ice on Lake Superior near Sault Saint Marie, Michigan. Unfortunately, they were lost to us forever. I'm glad everyone in this video made it out ok, but never underestimate the Great Lake they call Gitche Gumee.
Great extraction with no one getting hurt or wet Except the diver! Anything can happen in those situations. Can't wait to see the snowmobile dry out startup?
REAL NICE SLED FOR SALE! I'll avoid buying one on marketplace and craigslist for awhile seeing as this happened to a lot of people this winter. Good job man! Dont try and turn the stuff on until its dry.
im happy for all the people involved they are safe and can fish another day !! thanks to all the first responders and the dive crew awesome work !! its nice to know someone will come save you when it all goes wrong !!
Glad you guys are safe. Will you be putting out a video on what happened? How it could have been avoided? Lessons learned? Most are not as lucky to tell the story. Thanks in advance and once again, glad you guys are safe!
I've always liked the seat and luggage rack setup on these Cats. The 2up seat can be removed and give more room for gear. I have the 2000 Panther 440 fan and then a 2008 M8. It's nice to have an older rough fan cooled sled for when shit like this happens. Glad you got it running again though.
Glad to see it worked out for you to retrieve your equipment. I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but if not...You might think about buying a TON of rice and putting all the electronic equipment in it for at least two months to dry out. Preferably near a dry heat source. You'll be surprised how well that will work. Hopefully, you won't have to replace it that way.
Didnt even see the smallmouth at first had to go back and watch it again. Shoulda been like "hold on give me 5 mins guys i gotta jig this hole we just cut" 😄
Cant beleive how little ice ya got at end of January? I see JMO has a NAUTALUS on his sled and this is a great video on why everyone should have one on their sled/gear. Glad all are safe... Gear can be replaced , lives cannot.
@Daniel, Agree sir,Only 1 problem as of march 1st nebulus is shutting their doors. So once they are all sold out is it unless another company starts making/selling them.
An interesting video, thanks for creating and posting. I'll be interested in the follow-up, what you could get to work and what wouldn't. Glad that this didn't end tragically.
Just saw this pop up. Glad you got the sled running. Haven’t watched the video yet. Did you shut the engine down when it went in? Also, how was the drill? I put a dewalt impact in the lake for two years. The battery was pooched, new battery and a bit of rust or dirt flew out. Still using it 6 years later.
I love how you can just drop a snowmobile at the bottom of a lake and leave it there for a few days and come and get it and pull a spark plug out and it's just fine
Next time...You put the hummingbird in a rubbermaid with 2 bags of rice and seal the lid. 2 days and it should be dry. May not work but did for me on my 2 way radios. One of my 30 lb power supplies was under water for 12 hours. Dried it out and sprayed it with Deoxit and it was been working daily since 2016.
I lost my vexilar and drill earlier this year. Fished with the vexilar three days later. Oh my drill is toast. I had to buy a new one but I got everything else back although I was fortunate enough to not have a snowmobile on the ice that day
Great vid. Cool to see the smallie under the sled. Shows they love structure! Curious though, did the sled go through right where the hole was cut to dive or did it go through on thin ice further away? How long prior to the dive did the sleds go down? My brother and his wife sunk their sleds about 15 years ago. We had the seats off and foam removed and left them in a workshop bathroom (SMALL) with a dehu running for months. the seats felt warm, but one of them apparrently never got rid of all the water. At the very first freeze the seat froze solid. It was never a soft seat after that. Should have just bought a new seat and recycled the foam and vinyl.
@@Wisconsin_Fisherman if ever in a pinch give us a call we built an ice recovery machine that floats so no need to wait for solid ice and can save you from getting fined by DNR. Cool recovery and nice footage!
Hey buddy it will be interesting to see if you can clean all the water out of the sled & get it all dried out & all the fluids changed if it will ever run again?? I’m pretty sure I could get it to run again as long as it died or got shut down before it went under!! I’m just so glad that you & your buddy was both ok for sure!!!
I'm frm northwest Alaska, and had fell thru twice in my years. the first time was with my cousin while we double rode on my machine. it was very scary..it happened so sudden and without thinking we didnt jump towards the same area. he jumps off thru the back area where it was the thin side, while i stayed on thinking it was not as deep. i held on until it was too late, i had submerged and feeling the handle bars disappear from my grip and im fighting for the surface. my cousin had broke thru numerous times trying to get out, where i had found a safe spot to reach him and had pulled him out. thankfully we both managed to get out. soaken wet and night time, it was probably the scariest time of our lives. a buddy and another cousin were hollering in a safe distance on their snowmachine asking if we were ok and where is a good spot for us to walk to to get to them, we eventually got to them and was rushed back to town. we get dropped off, and being teens we didn't think of much to let anybody know that there was thin ice in back of town. so we went to school the next day, but word had gotten out that "somebody" fell thru last night..nobody knew it was us, and so we became the scare story for the day. my cousin and I both signed out early during lunch and decided to go out where the incident happened. out of nowhere, roughly 30 people came out to offer a hand to retrieve my machine. slowly buy surely, after a while of chipping and hooking with a hook, we were able to hook the front right trail arm and man handled it up and out. the second was me going out to a pressure ridge on the lake bay to chip down a crossing where the stake trail had risen. THANKFULLY I had a long ice chipper with me, I'm cautiously chipping towards the edge where the stake trail splits. figuring it was safe I let down my guard, and in I went. it happened so fast, but I was able to flop the chipper side ways. I felt my lower half swing up and under from the current, and I'm hanging on for my life. out of pure adrenaline I muscled up, fully geared, and soaken wet I was able to crawl out. the sad part about this one was I was by myself. nobody woulda known that I could have been gone. if I didn't have that ice chipper I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be here to tell this story. stay safe people. bring someone along if you know the conditions are bad. especially while traveling on the ice.
Thanks for sharing the experience man. I'm glad you have cool friends and we're able to get your items back. Hopefully they will work still! Dropped a like too
Remove crank drain bolt.. Remove plugs.. Unplug everything and but a few cans of carb cleaner and a can of electronics cleaner.. Cdi should be submersible with a lot of the other deals like the regulator should all be submersible. Soak them cylinders down real good with cans of carburetor cleaner keep turning the engine over until it starts to leak out everywhere. I'm pretty sure that's a two stroke with a dry crank. I would probably drain and refill the chain case. Remove tank and empty and put about a pint of gas in and shake it around dump that out a couple times as well to remove all the water. Should be good to go
Got the sled running!! Runs like a top!

People die every year by venturing out on the ice before ensuring it is safe. You are lucky you are around to tell this story.
Good video...tragic circumstances. I’m happy you got your gear back...I feel for you with everything that got recked. Prayers my friend!
Thanks so much

@Louis Fernandez,I agree. But only problem with that is nebulus as of march 1st is out of bussiness.
could make a lot of money recovery sleds and other vehicles up there in Hayward and Rice Lake area

It sunk on thin ice we had to wait for more ice to get it, it was in the water for 30 days. I have other videos showing it run again.

You have to listen to the first 15 seconds
Wow... anyone's worst nightmare.. glad your ok!

Aqua Vu for the win!
Let know what was salvageable. Glad you got your stuff back safely.

Quick recovery. Drain everything out, fresh gas and oil, grease the water outta everything you can. Let 'er rip, tater chip!
That's crazy man
So what was the recovery charge?
What's it cost to recover, is that an insurance claim up north???
Question, when the diver is in the water do you have a rescue line attached to the diver or a second "rescue" diver if needed?
Yes definitely
Is you snowmobile one of the ones that fell through on LCO
You guys are crazy

I am curious if it's a dewalt 18v you use for the auger? I use the same for 200mm auger
20v yes
Nice recovery but I did note there was no back up diver!! Under ice diving "alway" requires a back up diver ready to go in case there is a problem!
We had another guy ready in the heated ice shack
Most importantly, does the Vexilar work?
Awesome video
