I had the 85 1.8 and got rid of it, it was soft Wide open. I since then got the 100 f/2 and it is razor sharp even wide open.
Great video guys. Been waiting for this one. Especially since I've been pondering about exactly which one of those three lenses fits my bag the best.
Overall this series is worth every second, thanks for putting it out there for free.
Thanks!!! looking for this for a while!
the best video on choosing lenses!
The chromatic aberration on the 100 f/2 is really nasty and surprised you didn't mention it. Sure, it can be fixed in post etc etc but its hard to fix the nasty CA that lens has fully
*****
Even more reason to mention it!
I made these same comments regarding CA and it was deleted......Wonder why?
Conspiracy!
Yeah, at 3:13 it's quite severe and almost a dealbreaker on it's own.
Thanx for the video. I don't understand why you guys skipped 135mm though. I would love to see 70-200 f2.8 II vs. 135 f2 comparison.
Hope it's coming.
Thanx again for the amazing comparison series!
I picked up a used in excellent condition 100mm f/2, and I have to say that it should be the choice for anyone looking for a portrait lens since it has been out for so long and can be found for such a great price in the used market. If you NEED the macro, then get the L. Most people don't need the macro, and would be better served just getting the f2 and another lens down the road.
I own the 2.8 nonL, and had the f2 before. Love them both, but if you need macro, it's gotta be the 2.8. Bear in mind, f2 is a tiny sliver at 100mm. I stop my nonL down to around 3.5 for portraits often anyway.. Sharp as a scalpel. Between the f2 and the 85 1.8, I would choose the 100. More reach, more variety against other primes, just as light, it's like a secret weapon.
I own the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS and it's a very amazing lens! It's quickly becoming my most used lens and I've had trouble taking it off my body since I got it since I love it that much.
Pokefreak 13 have you tried the non L? if so would you recommend it for me. I only record videos.
Joseph Dillard I don't do video so I can't give exact advice but if you have a stablizer for your camera then the Non L should be enough for your needs :D
I need this right now...
How to download fullsize samples? Thanks in advance.
Hiya, did you miss out the 135mm prime? Can't seem to find it.
i want to buy a lens for candid moments
which one can i buy
canon 100mm or canon 135mm
FOR VIDEO WORK
Excellent, even when I disagree here or there - I do believe the 100/2 is better for portraiture than the 85/1.8, because the 85 gives more background and the photographer gets too close to the subject, and the difference in aperture and bokeh is nullified by the shortest focal distance. But very thoughtful anyway.
Completely agree with your conclusion. When I first got my 100 2.8L macro, I was disappointed in seeing another plastic lens. Once I started using it as a macro and portrait lens, I was extremely impressed with the image quality and IS. It is a plastic L lens but another plastic fantastic.
I want to buy macro lens plz suggest between 100mm 2.8 L and non L
Hey, Pye.... what is your thought on the 100mm Macro vs. Extension tube if you are only using it for macro photography??? Pretty much at f8 or more.
I've used Kenko extension tubes on the 100mm L and they were great, no real discernable drop in IQ and much much cheaper than the Canon brand.
Great Videos Pye, its seams to be all about Canon lens, I'm a nikon user, how about nikon Lenses
ThankYou brother! 👍🇧🇷
Thanks buddy
Interesting that you should make a video comparing two macro lenses (which are designed for close up photography) and comparing them to a lens which is designed for portrait photography. Did I miss something?
Yes.....they are all good lenses for portrait shots.....they are all 100mm prime.....but not all can do macro.....the macro is a plus....and then the IS is a plus.....there are many comparisons of these same three lenses for a reason. Personally I will wait and get the 100mm f2.8L is macro... It covers all the bases !
The Macro ones are worth the money imo.
I have an 85mm 1.8 should i upgrade to 100mm 2.8L IS?
I'm concerned about the lowlight capability tho since i shoot weddings
100 mm is much better for portrait photography, the lens to subject working distance is better for facial close-ups. The working distance for head and shoulder portraits . The working distance allows you to capture the image without getting in your subjects face. Also the prespective from the 100mm doesn't distort the subjects nose.
Thank you..I'm also in dilema choosing 100mm lens. I already had 85 f1.8 lens. I think I go for 100mm L
Glad to be of service!
I need some recommendations on indoor shooting. i recently bought a 70d and I'm in diapers when it comes to shooting. the bundle came with two kit lenses which are terrible indoor.
I believe the Canon kit lenses are underated....especially the 18 to 135 and the 55 to 250.....but ofcourse I will end up with an L lens and get spoiled !!
85mm 1.8 adn you can't go wrong especially if you are on a budget and super high grade professional work. I've done portraits for clients with the 85mm 1.8 and it's worked extremely well! Fairly inexpensive as well. The 50mm 1.8 is not bad either.
I have all 3 and the 100mm f2 is the best portrait lens. I do disagree that the 85mm 1.8 is preferable. The 85mm has far more CA wide open than the 100mm f2. I found that by using my 100mm f2 at 2.2, the CA clears up and the results are great. The 100mm f2 has nicer bokeh than the 85mm as well.
I'm trying to decide : 100mm F2 or 70-200 F4 ? what do you guys think is more useful ?
update, i bought the 100mm F2, it suffers greatly from color fringe :)
I had the Canon 70-200 f4. It is a great lens for the price. I sold it to get a 70-200 2.8.
ColonelRuiz old tech. Anywhere to see photos? Looking at a used 100 f/2 rn to just add to my prime collection. I have the 28 1.8 50 1.4 85 1.8. Been enjoying 28 1.8 + 85 1.8 on my two cams for make up scenes lately. Used to do sigma 35 And 85 but now want to have a mix of 35 & 100 if the room is big enough. I have multiple shooters and don’t want to have double (prime) lenses outside the 16-35/70-200.
@@ColonelRuiz and what camera body did you use?
he's right I own the 100mm 2.8 L it kicks ass and its 2 lens in one. it is super sharp!!
If you're on a budget buy the L anyway, you really won't regret it for a second (and it won't decrease in value as much as the other non L lenses). Image stabilisation is an utter godsend. A stunning lens.
Do you really want to drag a tripod around all the time? A lot of folk
don't and would rather hand-hold when out in the field. I have extensive
experience with macro lenses and would choose a stabilised to
non-stabilised any day of the week, much more versatile. Recommending a
cheap thirty dollar tripod is maybe not the best idea, you get what you
pay for.
I'm going to buy the 100mm f/2.8l lens today so excited!
Canon 100mm Primes Lenses - The SLR Lounge Canon Lens Wars Episode 13 !
Flipping heck Pye, was it 'Date Night' and you were in a hurry to get off when you recorded this? I know you normally talk fairly fast when you do this type of review but I think you broke all records on this one. Very interesting though although obviously because of you tube etc we don't see the little nuances you do. I do more macro with very little portrait so i have no doubt at all I chose the right lens with the f2.8 L. Thank you.
Too much information too fast. Hard to follow.
I agreed but you can always replay it
Nice one I’ve been debating over these lenses and I’m now thinking go to L 👿 lol cheers 🍻 😂
what was the reason why you were speaking that quickly? good comparison but bad presentation.
You can adjust your playback speed to .75
The 100/f2 has TERRIBLE chromatic aberration! Look at the sequins even...
+Chris Elliott Yeah, I was wondering why there was no mention of that....
I sense a strong bias towards the L here. The non-L macro is $200 cheaper than the L version (amazon), as far as macro work is concerned, you're almost always going to be on a tripod anyway, that extra $200 can be used for lighting and/or modifiers, or a good tripod. Both are very difficult to use in low-light situations when speed and accuracy are taken into account. In my opinion, IS is a luxury for this type of lens if you're mostly going to use this for things like product photography as the differences in IQ is not that wide between the 2. Although both are considered excellent in portraits (with lots of available light or with flash), you'd expect a lot of missed shots when used on taking photos of people in events, 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS would be your go-to lens for this kind of work and not any of these lenses, not sure about the AF performance of 100mm f/2.0 in low light though.
What about macro??? You comparased 2 macro and 1 non macro 🤔 and you said nothing about macro
Literally talks about it at 4mins.
Does this guy actually know anything about lenses? Seemingly not.
