I am an older guitar player. I must have looked at over 10 instruction videos on how to do that opening riff. No one has explained it so clearly and simply. I am going to pay a lot more attention to your channel. Thank you!
I appreciate that, Kathleen. Happy New Year! By the way, I just wrote a great guitar book for beginners - Book 1 in a Series! You can find it here: www.fatfreecartpro.com/i/z117 Books 2 and 3 coming soon! Also, I have a book that goes along with my D-C-G Trick video: www.fatfreecartpro.com/i/yuut And I made a NEW D-C-G Trick video to go along with the book - you can see it and buy the book here: www.song-bike.com. Always love your instruction. Clear, simple and comfortable. When I started to learn guitar (not the dreadful, soulcrushing lessons when I was young) I searched, there is a lot of really BAD instruction out there. Your lesson on the D,E,G, trick started me in style. In that 25 minute lesson, I learned 12 songs and was playing them clearly enough that friends recognized them right away. You have been my 'go to' instruction resource ever since. When people I meet say they want to learn, I point the right to you every time.
Thanks Rob! By the way, I have a new book out, The Strum Pattern Bible. Here's a RUclips video about it: ruclips.net/video/xG6xsa9sKiE/видео.html And you can get it at: www.song-bike.com
Thank you for being generous in posting tabs on screen unlike other channels, like Marty, etc. and all others who are so SELFISH in putting tabs ON SCREEN! keep it up!
I appreciate that, Arun - it takes me forever! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel. And I have LOTS of videos at www.song-bike.com available to subscribers. Please check it out !!
This is the most genuine of all versions of chords for my favorite "rock" song. It does not avoid the minors and sharps that set the mood for this masterpiece. Luckily, with 50+ years of struggling, I don't even have to play the partials.
Thanks J.E.! By the way, I just wrote a great guitar book for beginners - Book 1 in a Series! You can find it here: www.fatfreecartpro.com/i/z117 Books 2 and 3 coming soon! Thanks! Enjoyed this tutorial. I have learned a great deal about little ways to make the chord changes easier from you. I appreciate the time you take to explain without rushing on. I’m going to give this a try!
As I was playing along with this great lesson, a seasonal favorite of mine by The Band popped into my head - Christmas Must Be Tonight. It's a terrific Robbie Robertson composition! Thanks for your awesome lessons!
Thanks for the great video. I appreciate all the hard work you do in these lessons and they help me a lot I watch for the notification for your videos every day to learn a new song.. thank you
This is a very helpful lesson! I think if you were with a full band you might be able to do the "A E D E D" pattern at the end of the chorus. With just solo guitar, it is really important to capture the descending figure which is where the F# comes in...Listening to the recording, you can hear that Danko is playing "A G# F# E D". There really isn't much band in the mix at all so it's difficult to tell what the intended harmony might be. Someone else says D with an F# in the bass...that works too, it's just a little harder to get around with small hands. Thanks for sharing!
I kind of felt rushed below. I commend this man for not making the music too easy. Some songs should never be cheated and this is one. The Band influenced my life ( 73years ) along with Clapton and you cannot do justice ( 40 years as a trial lawyer specializing in homicides ) if one will not give the respect due. as I said below, I think, this is sacred to me. Thus, I offer thanks to the teacher for doing it correctly---it was not meant to be easy, or, like real trial work, anyone could have composed the originals. Now, I head off to see how our instructor did on "Crossroads"--Cream version. Playing that one properly is just plain hard; but, who wants to play mediocrity?
I already subscribe to too many utube guitar sites but clicked on here anyway, and it was kind of a light bulb moment. With the tab and your explanation, I finally get it. I will check your web site. thanks
I appreciate that, Nanchassch! By the way, I've been working on a book to go along with my D-C-G Trick video - stay tuned ! Something I do with the "A" chord is finger it in a "D7" shape within the second fret. It makes it easy to go into the "C#m" because all I have to do is slide the index finger onto the first fret. The index also stays on the third string and just slides back and forth for "E", and "D". For me, it just works a little smoother. Plus, my fingers fit better when playing an "A" chord that way.

As an old hippie and also cognizant of my Christian faith, I rarely get snarky in public. I had enough in courtrooms; I can't understand a dislike for this channel/site. I defended the First Amendment all of my professional life. What is shared here and on FB is generous in effort and spirit. Now, I did get pissed off when I only got 39 seconds of "Crossroads," but that did not provoke a lack of appreciation.
My band does this song..........so.............I learned to play the intro (and I don't normally play anything that even resembles "lead" guitar) So we get up on stage and we all just pray that I make it through the intro without a catastrophe LOL.
Jonathan, Thanks for another great video / lesson. The strings do sound brighter. What gauge do you prefer on your acoustics? I switched from 12s to 10s and like the difference.

Thanks man! I was playing this song earlier tonight sans the cool intro and I really wanted to up my game by learning the intro. I searched RUclips and found your lesson. You really nailed it!! (I play the song in G so all I did was take everything you showed and move it down 2 frets. Perfect!!!)

I disagree with the last part of the intro lead, should have been done on the 7th and 9th fret the E&B strings.
