- TV is way better than it used to be and you can say the same thing for the opening titles of your favorite series. They used to be afterthoughts, but now they’re artistic statements of their own.

thanks captain obvious
The music video at 5:22 is Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton - Our Hell. Awesome song, but not super well known, so I was surprised to see it pop up here. Whoever did the video edit on this has good music taste!
oldmoviemusic yo that music video was actually grief by Earl sweatshirt
interesting, the videos are SO similar! watch the video for Our Hell and you'll see why I thought that was it.
thanks for the correction.
bitteoszillierensie thanks so much!!
Glad they mentioned Westworld and Daredevil. The best opening credits can be watched and appreciated at the beginning of every episode without getting boring. Netflix always gives the option to skip the opening credits, and I'm all like "WHAT? NO!"
Glad you gave True Detective the time it deserves; it is _the best_ title sequence of any TV show.
I could argue that Narcos' title sequence and theme song combination is superior, but True Detective is good, as well.
U Wot M8 I think Westworld as well is up there its pretty chilling
Westworld is great but unfortunately the theme's leitmotiv on piano ruins everything.
The True Detective one is an intemporel masterpiece. Def my favorite ever.
True Detective, Westworld and I would add StartUp.
The terror..
Wow, a few years after watching that, True Detective's title sequence still gave me chills.
True Detective's intro literally pulls you the world that the show uses to drive its narrative which is literally what an intro is supposed to accomplish
For a second i thought i was watching a Vox video
Me too. when I read the title, I thought it was Vox
0:53 The way he introduces Patrick is straight outta vox videos. It's getting annoying though.
Before they got super political
they will definitely steal their format like every one with the neistat
Reneiloé fcking same
narco's title sequence will always be my favourite
Great video, True Detective's opening credits really is a statement on how good the show itself is.
JayDub season 2 was trash tho
Lol yeah but I consider season 1 and 2 as completely different entities.
Absolutely! They did an amazing composition!
I see true detective. I click.
How could WIRED miss out on talking about THE WIRE and its opening sequence? 😒
The 1960's had some trippy Saul Bass inspired artwork with their intros.
I have to admit, the title sequence for the first season of True Detective is probably the best title sequence in TV history. The art design, not to mention the song used, really piece together the show
Well shit. I guess my own video essay on TV Title Sequences won't be so unique when it drops next Monday...
Entertain The Elk Don't worry, I am excited anyway. Carry on!
Could we have a list of all the shows from which the title sequences mentioned are taken?
Okay, here you go(hope I got all of them):
0:17 Daredevil.
0:20 Vinyl.
0:24 Magnum P.I.

bitteoszillierensie damn respect
+bitteoszillierensie the real mvp over here!!
Not all heroes wear capes! Thank you, sir.
An observation: James Bond title sequences have always been pretty innovative for their respective eras, while Star Wars has chosen to retain its basic "original format".
Definitely a strategic choice, as the Star Wars movies seeks to convey a unified & continuous story-universe; while the Bond films often re-set their story anytime a new Bond actor takes the Mantle (I.e. look no further than re-starting the Spectre organization under Daniel Craig's Bond.)
James Bond title sequences are always something interesting, but as much as I appreciate them, inspiration behind them was probably Hitchcock's movies. An ex-title designer himself Hitchcock had some of the greatest and symbolical titles and jump-started some of the most prominent careers in the industry...
Nice catch. Didn't think of this while watching the video, but you're spot on.
PictureProductStudio .... I had never known that. It seems that Hithcock's influence has extended quite literally from beginning (Intro) to end in film & cinema.
Maxwaehrens ... Thanks!
The format for Star Wars is the serial, not basic"original format"
True detective has to be my favourite intro.
great video. I'd just like to mention one show that has really interesting approach to title sequences - BBC and Netflix's Peaky Blinders. They in every episode play the same song at the beginning with the opening credits rolling, but the song is incorporated into the opening scene. Pretty badass stuff for the badass show.
and a badass song too :)
A show title that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned was Dexter.
That show opening was... amazing. It found a way of making the most mundane activities of a morning routine look like the acts of a serial killer and just plain made you feel uncomfortable watching it.
I am glad to see Carnivale andTrue Blood used in this as examples though.
Great spot! I love the effort put in title sequences. They're are all so beautiful and different
It's amazing to think every little thing often has had a lottttttt of thought and effort put into it :)
this video is awesome, i have been actually thinking about title sequences for a while now and this video answered some of my questions!
I should have known you had gone to Art of the Title. I LOVE them and what they do with their website.
damn i miss the sopranos
The Crown, Sherlock & Daredevil are my faves. The Crown makes weirdly emotional for some reason.
West world title sequence IS SO GOOD!
The magnum pi intro is fucking great.
I'm completely obsessed with the opening titles for black sails
best opening? The Eric Andre Show.
True Detective's opening sequence was absolutely mind blowing! Really wish i could go back to watching it for the first time
I like Mr. Robot's opening because the typeface stays the same, but the song and backdrop of the opening change each episode.
Greatest opening titles? Stingray, hands down. "Standby for action. Anything can happen in the next half hour."
Also for the movie "Catch me if you can"
His dark materials and Succession are my favourites recently. These are my most recent never skip the intro.
Title sequence from No Offence is one of my favourites.
Is there anywhere I can find the script and bibliograohy/references for this essay?
True Detective intro blew my mind, and its cool to see how influencial it was to series after.
It's literally like a hook from an essay
Watch the title in full for episode 1,
skip title for every other episode.
Saw the True Detective intro in the thumbnail, instant click for one of the best shows ever.
true detective , sopranos and bojack are my fav opening sequences :)
Extremely informative video, thank you!
American Horror story, just, wow
The long sequences are coming back from a hiatus that started IMO with Scrubs. I distinctly remember seeing that short intro more and more being like, "nooooo don't be like them!!" Glad a longer format is coming back. I for one like to see credits
Nice video on a subject I'm always interested in (I love to sit through main titles and end credits of any kind and I appreciate the design). Still, some of the most creative and iconic titles sequences were made in 80's and 90's. Highly recommend website "Art of the Title" on the subject, BTW, a great website. Nice to see these guys interviewed on the subject.
Mad men and the crown are some of my favorites 😍😍
yo whats the title sequence from 3:07 from? its looks so cool
Great piece. Made me subscribe!
this channel is so underrated
No mention of Game Of Thrones???
Game of thrones is the reason why movies are cinematic, you fucking normie.
dude. what.
What did their title sequence revolutionize or greatly improve exactly? It's good looking, but not really noteworthy. Ramin Djawadi's score is the best part of it anyway.
Semyon Galtsev It is (in my opinion) one of the greatest title sequences of all time.
Random Dude. . GoT is adopted from books so there was less room for creating something new and other show talked in the video are absolutely 'Original'.
can someone list the names of all the shows who's title sequence have been shown
Talking about title sequences and no mention of anime OPs, possibly some of the best recurring examples of title sequences
I love the old title sequences of yore. They were great too.
Wired is making the best content on RUclips, keep up the good work plz
Still years behind simple anime OPs/EDs
Interesting to describe the title sequence as an airlock when many shows today put their title sequence after the first 5-10 minutes of the show
Daredevil's opening sequence is probably one of my favorites, it is
Great video, but no mention of Cheers?
I can't watch The Crown's opening without feeling power and getting shivers. Daredevil's is so good, too.
True Detective, Westworld, Earl Sweatshirt, Atlanta... You gained so much respect in less than 1min. Well done Wired, well done.
Dexter's always been one of my favorites
You know! Kyle Cooper is the one who started the Renaissance of title design! It’s a film called SE7EN! Also I was born during the time title sequences were taking to the next level!
The Expanse has some really nice opening graphics that help set up the universe a bit.
I'd also count Neistat's abrupt bold fonts amidst random timelapse and Vsauce's "Hey, Vsauce!".
RUclips and TeleVision being different medium, the analogies could be:
TV titles are airlocks, YT titles are doorbells.
So much of the evolution of title design has been directly parallel to the evolution of technology used to make it!
I get happy whenever I hear the it's always sunny theme
Have to mention that I feel like some influence comes here from anime openings, although western shows use more instrumental tracks and esoteric images rather than the sweeping presentation visuals of anime.
What music video is that at 5:21?
Was that guy at 2:10 named gandolfini?
Could've pointed out how GoT has that influence of introducing viewers to the show with the map and locations in the intro
I think this video needs to be updated and appreciate that anime has been doing this for decades. Making music videos and artistic landscapes out of the shows they present. This needs to be addressed because many of American title sequences are inspired by anime as well.
Elastic is the company that made True Detective’s amazing title sequence, and they also made the new Dead Island 2 title sequence. It’s amazing too
A shows title sequence is much like the opening theme for an anime. If it's good enough the audience will never tire of watching it. It will forever become part of the show.
anime is trash
That's your opinion but there are a lot of fantastic anime shows out there. Sorry that you're missing out.
Adriana Arrriba best example is Yuri on Ice. God I love that opening and I never skip it
Wish I could agree with you. I love anime openings but they're often way too blunt about who the characters are and what the main conflicts are that it pretty much turns into a minute and twenty seconds worth of spoilers. And that's not to mention Shonen anime's obsession with revealing battles and transformations in openings.
Like Cowboy Bebop...pretty iconic.
There are many great title sequences, but in my opinion DareDevil is the best. I say that due to the immediate tone setting for the series. Just off of the credits I knew that it wasn't going to be anything like previous comic book to screen adaptations.
Game of Thrones, Man in the High Castle, and The Sopranos all have amazing intros too.
Daredevil is way too similar to Arrow
for me, daredevil isn't only best superhero show, it is the best show ever, and i've seen many
Haunting of hill house into is heaps good too! And sharp objects, and basically any HBO intro.
True Detective, Game of Thrones and Westworld are goated but i also loved the Opening themes of the Netflix Marvel shows frol Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Defenders and even Iron Fist. They all slapped
The Leftovers is a masterpiece
I LOVEEEEEE The Crown's opening and of course GOT.
5:21 Earl Sweatshirt fans lost it
so glad you spotted it
the adamantium age of tv
The first season of the newsroom 😂
GoT has like the best opening combined with the most epic song
Make a video on How Game Title Sequences Grew Up
Interesting video. However I couldn't help but think that anime shows have been creating amazing title sequences for decades. The openings for Code Geass and Attack on Titan make True Detectives opening seem kinda lackluster.
Oh god, it's a shame what happened to Vynil...
ikr? i was super stoked about it and the look what happened... :(
Indeed it was like Mad Men but in discography industry with really cool music, I had high hopes for it and loved the actuation of Cannavale :(
True Detective, Daredevil, Punisher, Breaking Bad, Vikings, Luther, Narcos, Band of Brothers, The Walking Dead, Westworld and i maybe get some hate for this one but : "13 reasons why" when you connect it with the sadness of the story, the intro gets very emotional
Calendar said October, this came out March. wow
Netflix has dope opening sequences. My favorite has to be from the Crown.
No one mentioning Dexter? For me it's by far the best opening credits ever made!
My favorite title sequence is Fringe. The Sci-Fi show told stories that span across multiple parallel universes and timelines, and each got its own style or color scheme for the title sequence. So each episode, as the sequence rolled, you immediately knew which universe or timeline would be the focus of that episode.
Netflix DARK's intro is unskippanle and beautiful 💕
Im surprised at the lack of comment on innovative opening sequences pre-soprano. Twin peaks and the x-files were truly groundbreaking.
Didn't expect to see Halt and Catch Fire or Earl Sweatshirt get a nod here. Whoever wrote this video is cultured 😤
i really really like this video, just kinda bummed GOT and Hannibal was not even shown :(
What song/music video is the one at 5:26?
"Buddy Holly" by Weezer
What is that show where the woman is dragged away, quite early in the video?
Stranger Things
Watch the person of interest tv show theme, its one of the best and coolest looking, the dystopian art style is awesome
The Jessica Jones title sequence is hands down one of my favorites.
I think I know why the revolution began! Kyle Cooper! He is the one who unlocked a new generation of title design
What about" Bosch "
Homicide: Life on the Street's title sequence (seasons 1-4) was my favorite. Directed by Ted Demme if I'm not mistaken.
damn this is such an amazing video
