  • Porsche 911 996 Carrera still remains as the ultimate sports car bargain. It is a great piece of kit for daily driving, weekend blasts and even track action. But for those who want a more track oriented build, there is a wide range of modifications from a GT3 body kit to brake mods, that would bring a base Carrera a lot closer to its GT3 sibling.
    Here is the story of one such build, told by its owner. Below you can find the list of modifications done to the car:
    Front & Rear 15mm spacers
    Front strut bar
    Rear strut bar
    Catless x-pipe
    Recaro Spg seats
    KW V3 coilovers
    FVD deep sump oil pan
    Cayenne Turbo S front brakes
    Gt3 master brake cylinder
    Short shifter
    Rss roll cage
    LW battery Odyssey pc680.
    Carrera 4s rear discs combined with 996 carrera front calipers.
    Aasco Lwfw+Perf clutch
    Gt3 rear subframe solid aluminium bushings
    H&R rear & front sway bars
    6 Point Schroth harnesses
    Momo Mod07 steering wheel
    Elephant Racing front camber plate

    Great video! I especially love how it’s ‘just’ a very well modified Carrera. With so many pining over GT3’s, I’m with the owner and would much rather modify a base model. The car seen here is basically where I want my speed yellow ‘99 C2 to be at when it’s all done.

      Thank you very much for your nice words, appreciated big time. I took a short ride in it while filming and I was quite impressed how compliant it was despite the mods. Frankly, I was expecting a harsh ride. It really is a cleverly modified car. Good luck with your build by the way. Cheers!

    Man, this Carrera + appears close to perfect. Talk about passion and resolve, this chap is the kind of person I would take my 996 to and ask him to work on it. Great to see this kind of work and dedication. Want that car badly.

    Brilliant car. Excellent modifications, well done.
    I have to say I much prefer the look of the gen 1 996 to the gen 2. The "fried egg" headlights look great in my opinion.

    Quick comment for people actually looking to get more power out of an M96: retrofitting the X51 Powerkit is really the only path to go down without boring out the engine. Air filters, exhausts, etc aren't going to get you far, but Porsche's factory powerkit changed a whole lot more than that. New heads, new camshafts, new cylinders, new connecting rods, new valves, new oil pump, new oil pan, more oil lines, a center radiator, new intake plenum, new exhaust manifolds, and a revised ECU. It was a $7,000 option from the factory, and only sold in Europe and Japan on the 996.1. Factory X51 cars have engine number M96.01S (M96.03S on 996.2), and bumped the power by "20 horsepower" according to Porsche, though this has been determined to have been an under-report to not hurt GT3 sales. A number of owners have measured 350 BHP which gets really close to the M96.76 in the GT3.
    I'm in the US so I don't have access to such engines, but if I ever come across the parts to rebuild my engine with it, I'm snapping them up.

    • @WheelNuts
      @WheelNuts  2 года назад +1

      Hello Henry. Many thanks for watching and dropping a comment. The kit was a costly option but it was well worth the money considering all the parts it provided with and the power it delivered. It basically made the car a "Carrera S". I've yet to come across one over here but as you've mentioned, for someone who's gonna do a rebuild an engine, it definitely needs to be checked out. Probably Porsche didn't sell the kit as many as they hoped and 997 Carrera was born as a consequence. Cheers!

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 2 года назад +3

      @@WheelNuts Thanks for the response! Love the videos. As for the kit, I don't think any sales figures were ever released, but I can't imagine many sold given they didn't really advertise it. The closest it got to mass-recognition was the 3.6 variant in the 40AE cars. I'd argue it was almost more like a 911 GTS if paired with the Sports Package (sport seats, M030 suspension, and limited slip diff) and hollow spoke wheels. I have an early 996 with all of those save for the X51 kit. Its still plenty of fun, and I've only got ~110k miles on the car, so I'm a ways out from needing a rebuild, but given that the parts for the kit seem to transact for ~10,000 USD right now, it will probably remain out of my reach.
      As for X51's impact on later cars, X51 was offered as an option through the 997.1 on the Carrera S, after which on the 997.2, it became the GTS model (all GTS engines being 9A1.xS and all internal build codes listing X51 for GTS models).

    • @WheelNuts
      @WheelNuts  2 года назад +1

      Henry, thank you for commenting and your support for the channel, it really means a lot for me. I assume back in those days Porsche had not fully discovered the magic of "product differentiation" as a way of marketing. That configuration really would make it a "996 GTS". By the way, we are more or less on similar mileage, mine is at 119k. Have you done anything about the IMS please?

    • @henryatkinson1479
      @henryatkinson1479 2 года назад +2

      @@WheelNuts My IMS is original still. My car is a 4/98 build, so I have a dual row, and a block safe from the coolant intermix failure (low-milage 3/98s and earlier may still suffer from this). Im thinking about doing it with my next clutch job, but if anything Id probably just put another OEM dual row bearing in. Since theyre sealed bearings, they wont last forever, but the load capacity of the dual row is well over-spec, so its underworked and should last a long time.

    Thanks for great video with lots of very good ideas! Very inspirational too! I've only just started doing the first few little things to my 996.2, will be a few years to yet to the level of your car! One small, rather silly comment on the lowered suspension: OEM M030 sports suspension package is 'only' minus 10mm ride height (and stiffer coil-overs and stiffer, none-adjustable sway bars, but nothing like the stiffness on the GT3). To get to -/-30mm on normal 996 with OEM parts the option number was X74.

      Here is more detail on the brakes via message sent by my friend: The calipers are 18z cayenne turbo s calipers with ventilated oem cayenne turbo s disks. Other than that the master cylinder is stock gt3 one. The hard part is manufacturing an adaptor to fit those machined calipers in order to make them a vertical mount style. If you search for 996 cayenne brakes you will see what I mean. Unfortunately this is not a bolt on brake solution..
