A lot of these changes weren't actually NASCAR's idea, they were demanded by the networks. The playoffs were demanded by NBC to boost end-of-season ratings, and the Caution Clock and stage racing were demanded by Fox and NBC to show more commercials.
@@davibarbosa1445I say the playoffs because few ideas they've had compound so many problems onto their product in one decision. As bad as it was, the overtime line could've at least been somewhat more tolerable with better officiating & a better points system. The caution clock is the only competitor to the playoffs regarding terrible ideas and only loses out in my mind because they caught the issue early.
You and I agree on basically everything. Growing up, when Indiana was effectively on Central Time for most of the NASCAR season, races would start at 11am for us. Those were the good ol days.
Here is my proposal to fix races ending under caution: Bring back the overtime line, but now its in effect on the white flag. If a wreck occurs before the Leader hits it, rack em up and go again. If they wreck after the Leader hits it, they race back to the line. The key here is to place it as late as possible on the track so that racing back to the line wouldn't really compromise safety. I would put it on the exit of turn 4. worst case scenario is just to bring out the caution if they wreck after they cross the overtime line and the winner would be whoever was the leader at moment of caution, but that's still miles better than what we have now. I think the overtime line could work very well if they implemented it like this
Also I would like it if they increased the number of laps for overtime, because 2 laps really isn't enough time to race, especially at super speedways. I say give them 3 laps on the first overtime, and 2 for all of the remaining overtimes. At least this way they would have an opportunity to get up to speed on the first attempt
@@CoolCat_24x on the superspeedways they wil wait until the exit of 2 of final lap to make some real moves anyway, so there's no need for more laps in overtime
@@ming454 It takes them about a lap to get up to speed at superspeedways, which means in an overtime situation they really only get 1 full lap to race. giving the pack more time to get going and let people form runs would make the racing better
Actually the caution clock debuted at the first race of the 2016 season. I remember this because the very first time it was due to expire it caused a huge wreck on pit road.
People need to realize what is legal and what isn’t. You need to advance your position below the double yellow line for it to be illegal. Harrison Burton was literally in the lead so it was physically impossible for him to advance his position under the line. You can cry me a river all you want, Burton’s block was completely legal.
They tried removing stage break cautious at road courses last year and it provided boring racing. I was at the 2023 watkins glen race and other than a caution for chase Elliot running out of gas William Bryon ran away with the win and it was the fastest race in modern nascar history
Instead of stage cautions they gotta just have a set point in the middle of the race where they quietly give points without a yellow, the way the Rolex 24 does
They used to do that but with bonus money at the halfway point back in the 80s/90s, it was tied in to a contest on at least ESPN in that if you correctly picked who was leading at halfway you'd be in the running to win a Corvette or a Camaro or something like that, and the drivers got a nice bit of money for leading at halfway as well
Inconsistency with cautions and penalties goes beyond anything else I think. I can talk about the car, engine rules, etc but one thing that’s always been a problem is them not following their own rule book since I started watching.
To add to the late start times, the Southern 500 starting at 6pm this year is pretty very odd to me. Something about having to stay up late on Sunday night If I want to see the race just bugs me. I mean if it gets rain delayed for even and hour, it has to finish on Monday. Saturday night races like this past weekend are 100x better.
It sucked that NASCAR actually tried the eliminate the stage cautions last year and instead went back to bringing them out at the road courses, even though the strategy was actually much better. But apparently it was too boring for nascar
For the dumb rules video, you need to go over the what the actual fuckery that was the early 1991 season pit road rules, after a fatal pit road crash at the 1990 Atlanta season ending race. It literally changed every single event, and it was born out of good intentions but oh it was a spectacular clusterfuck, and eventually led to the pit road speed limit as we know it. Oh and even ESPN had a hard time keeping up too, let alone the teams and drivers, too.
The rules, AFAIK, were only in effect for the first 5 or 6 races of the 1991 season, and afterwards they simply implemented pit road speed limits like we have today.
You left off one of the worst decisions that actually caused NASCAR to do all the things you mentioned in your video....... the 2000 single network TV contract. It all started when NASCAR went to the "one network" contact with FOX start with the 2001 season (which they sublet some to NBC). You don't intentionally limit your exposure/coverage! The ratings have been slowly backsliding since which led to the playoffs, stage cautions, overtimes, green clocks, single source parts to pack up the field, charters and shifting start times. Before that you had races on CBS, ABC, NBC, ESPN, TBS & TNN..... even Showtime had races, plus they were not in group blocks, so each network reminded you to watch NASCAR while promoting their next respective race in a couple weeks. Plus each network had a vested interest to have some kind of coverage of the sport even if they did not have the race that week. In the same time period, the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA all INCREASED the number of networks covering their sport all while NASCAR decreased its coverage. Let me put it this way, if you owned a business, would you want 6 people talking/promoting your business or just one person?
It really is all these gimmicks starting with the 2004 season that makes nascar unwatchable for me. I grew up a Dale Sr. fan and try so hard from time to time to give nascar another chance…and so often it’s just not much more than WWE on 4 wheels. There’s better racing on a random Tuesday night
Very soon NASCAR is going to mandate overtime for every race. Leader completes the full race distance, caution is thrown, chaos ensues just like the France’s want.
Stop watching and attending races until enough money is lost that the France Kennedys have to sell the sport. That’s the only chance of things getting better.

I know! Just go back to calling it the Chase for the Cup, it’s unique to NASCAR and more descriptive than NASCAR Playoffs
