  • Today we had the incredible opportunity to talk to Matthew Godfrey about a unique character in LDS church history, John C Bennett. Matthew shares John's fascinating story and explains how he fits in church history.
    Matthew is a historian for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church). He has done extensive research for the Joseph Smith Papers and continues to work with the church in sharing church history.
    John C Bennett had a variety of professional interests throughout his life including a medical background and military background. He reached out to Joseph Smith to express his disappointment in how Joseph had been treated. He then meets Joseph and joins the young LDS Church. He quickly gains popularity in the church, becoming the mayor in Nauvoo, and an assistant president to the First Presidency of the Church. However, soon John finds himself in the midst of controversy.
    Matthew discusses the following and more:
    - John seems to have notable experience professionally as well as important contributions to the Church. Matthew talks about John's professional background and how such background helped progress the early church.
    - Matthew talks about John's "spiritual wifery" and John's misinterpretation of the topic.
    - John is excommunicated and has hard feelings against Joseph Smith. Matthew discusses what the excommunication and negative feelings do to the reputation of Joseph.

    This was all good and very interesting. I did learn some things about John C. Bennett that I didn't know before. I have read a few of the older books published by early church members and a lot of this was made clear in those books. B. H. Roberts discusses Bennett quite a bit in his book, Succession in the Presidency in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
    Very good interview and completely worth my time. Thank you for doing this.

    This description of John C Bennett reminds me of a certain person I personally know and love, who is very interesting to talk to and kind, has a brilliant curious mind, withdrew his membership from the Church and railed against Joseph Smith for his plural marriages, and is now facing charges of having sex with a minor. I have zero negative feelings toward him, but the consequences to his wife and children and others is so sad.

    Joseph being a prophet does not mean the Lord stopped him from making errors.
    Which I think polygamy was.
    "These things" in Jacob 2:30 referred to the abominations of polygamy elsewhere in the chapter and is not a loophole.

    Matt: You had oversight over the whole Joseph Smith Papers project from 2013 to 2021. Some of us have a concern: There was an unforgivable lapse in the Joseph Smith Papers project. One of the volumes might make Larry Miller recoil. The Book of Abraham volume was polluted by critic Brian Hauglid's involvement. Maybe it could be redone and republished as a "Revised Edition," this time managed by scholar faithfuls like Latter-day Saint Egyptologists John Gee and Kerry Muhlestein. We don't need a skeptic who taints the Saints, nor a sellout secularized Church History Department who invites and supports critics in their very ranks in order to make a *_religious volume_* acceptable to liberals and secularists. We have no confidence in them now. Why did you allow or intentionally staff the Book of Abraham volume the way you did? What is your priority as a Latter-day Saint scholar? Which way are you facing?

    Did you know that Smith and Hyrum lived only 5 miles form Dartmouth!? Did you know that Hyrum Smith attended the Dartmouth preparatory school (Moore academy ON the Dartmouth campus)?? Hyrum was required to learn basic greek and latin to prepare for entrance into Darthmouth. Hyrum listened to over 1000 sermons and class lectures in Dartmouth Hall which was ON the Dartmouth campus. Members of Smith's family taught on Dartmouth over time. Pastor Ethan Smith (author of View of Hebrews) studied under Professor John Smith at Dartmouth. Professor Smith was related to Joseph Smith but died while Jospeh was young, but still formed a foundation of Dartmouth theological teaching.

    Bennet did not try to bring Joseph down until after Joseph threw Bennet under the bus about spiritual wifery. Which is what Joseph Smith was doing, he just called it something else like celestial marriage or polygamy. Joseph Smith was actually denying it at the time.

    • @Hamann9631
      @Hamann9631 5 месяцев назад

      @rodneyhuckaby8716 You are wrong. Bennet did not do the thing Joseph Smith was doing. Bennet had one night stands. Bennet did nothing worthy of the words "marriage" or "wife". Joseph Smith had marriages (He kept in touch with the wives as much as he could while christians were fulfilling Jesus Christ's prophecy about persecution.).

    • @rodneyhuckaby8716
      @rodneyhuckaby8716 5 месяцев назад

      @@Hamann9631 I am not defending John C. Bennet, because I think he was a sleazy guy. However, I have been a member of the church of Jesus Christ, my whole life. I am now 48 years old and I just barely learned two years ago that Joseph Smith practiced polygamy and had over 30 wives, but he denied practicing polygamy until the day he died.
      He kept it a secret from most everybody, except for some trusted individuals like John C. Bennett. They were best friends at one time.
      Oliver Cowdery left the church because he learned of an affair that Joseph Smith was having with Fanny Alger. Now the church wants to spin that story, and tell the members that, that was his first plural wife. Even though it looks like they were having an affair before the sealing keys from Elijah were supposedly given in April of 1836.
      So don’t tell me that I was wrong, because it looks like Joseph Smith was a sinner in his relationships with other women. He kept it a secret from his first wife, Emma, but when he got caught, he called it celestial marriage. What a joke. He just got caught, just like John Bennett got caught.
