1989 Mercedes 300E flat acceleration on first start

  • For more than a year I have had a flat acceleration from from the first start of the day, no matter what the air temperature might be. Once the engine warmed up just a little bit the car would drive fine for the rest of the day. Finally I found a blog about this problem, and it is so simple, these cars are designed to run as lean as possible and a simple adjustment of the EHA valve fixed the problem.

    Thank you so very much. My 1989 300E mint condition inside and out (193500 kms) which I just purchased 2 months ago off a neighbour who is the original owner had it sitting in her heated garage and not being driven for the last 5 years. I had a flat bed tow truck bring it over to my mechanic and he had to replace the 2 fuel pumps and the fuel injection pressure regulator, new plugs, new brakes all around, new battery to get it safetied for the road. It is blowing ice cold air after installation of retro fittings and recharge system with R134A. I asked another mechanic who specializes in high end foreign cars about the issue with cold start and gas peddle hesitancy before being warmed up and he said I would be looking at another $1500 bill if we could find the part and then time needed to get it fine tuned as to proper response. Well I am blessed beyond measure with a very inquisitive neighbour when it comes to things not running properly so there is a knock on my door this morning and he has discovered you on Utube and written notes in hand as to solving my cold start plus gas pedal hesitation. I brought my iPad out to the garage and we watched it and proceeded as instructed to fix the problem. Well no offence intended but to my amazement a 1/4 turn of the whatever and the car accelerates and responds immediately to the touch of the gas pedal and now I have to be very careful as it is like driving a new car altogether. Thank you so very much from a happy Benz driver in Perth Ontario Canada. Blessings

    Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and what you have learned about your 300e and SLC in your video catalog. I have two W124s and a R107 and have benefited greatly because you take the time to create such detailed instructional content. It is fantastic that a guy in Australia is able to help out folks around the world with their automobiles. Thanks again from SW Florida!

    Did that to my 92 500SL years ago. It was down on power and accelerating poorly. That simple adjustment made all the difference.

    Hey Paul, I'll email you later, about my latest challenge with my 300ce, but thanks for going back over this procedure. I'm going to tweak my eha valve to help that same issue soon. As I've mentioned in the past, appreciate all your videos, they really help out....

    How do you determine if the mechanical Bosch fuel injection needs a rebuild? This one is a 1990 300E in otherwise superb condition. A mechanic has endlessly fiddled with the air fuel adjustment. It is hard to start and has zero acceleration from a standstill. Once up to speed, it goes pretty good.

    Hi
    When you say sluggish, what do you mean? My car are tuned into specs, all the sensors and so (A lot from your videos too) But after a night, the car starts up but runs poorly, when I touch the pedal, like it misfires or something like that. After about a minute, it runs "good", but I don't like the way it runs before and I'm sure, that it could run better. Does it sounds like the symptoms, your 300e had? My 300e have a bigger camshaft in it, so I'm thinking about giving the EHA adjustment a shot.
    Thank you
    William

      Hi, William
      My car on a cold start was flat on acceleration, once warmed up it would run fine all day. Just adjusting the EHA valve made a difference. If your car misfires it could be something different, but try it anyway, it can't hurt your car. Cheers, Paul.

    Hi Paul
    Trying to sort a fluttering idle on my M103. ( No O2 Sensor)
    Could I ask, does the EHA moderate fuel pressure or mixture?
    I have 5 Bars of fuel pressure with valve closed and 5.4 Bars with it open.
    I think the problem may be a mixture problem but I don't want to change pressure values.
    Thanks in advance

    in my case firstly i did 1/4 turn on the eha adjustment but didnt make a good difference than i tried a full turn on the screw and wow what a difference on the engine acceleration and power! , however, only sometimes i still have a jerk on low accelerations and also first start of the day. fuel consumption seems too high as well. fuel distributor/injectors are good. fuel filter/potentiometer/ovp relay/ spark plugs/micro switch/throttle position sensor on the throttle body/accelerator cable are all new. what else do you recommend me to check? thanks alot!

    • @riffraffjazz
      @riffraffjazz  7 лет назад

      Hi, Your fuel increase is from the adjustment of the EHA valve, a little too much. Maybe your idle air control valve is dirty or the air intake plate maybe also dirty, you seem to have covered everything else? Good luck, Paul.

      @gcgj1540 7 лет назад +1

      thanks!! iacv valve is cleaned already i have a spare one and changed before but didnt make any difference, the plate is very clean also. i've been searching what was the factory adjustment for the eha valve.. found out it is 6 and 1/2 turns from the bottom on most and in some cases 5 and 3/4 turns.. so i think i will try the factory adjustment 6 and 1/2 turns from the bottom and see if it solves my problem.. as it is a very sensitive adjustment maybe a little bit off can make a big difference.

    Did jou disconnect the battery? Before taking the part of? If i lossen the bolds the petrol sprays out. And i hear the pump. Or how did you do it. Thank you.

    • @riffraffjazz
      @riffraffjazz  Год назад

      No I didn't but it sounds like you should as you have pressure there. For some reason the fuel pump is running with the ignition on.

      You can disconnect the battery but the fuel pump shouldn't be working with the ignition off. Just put a rag under the line when disconnecting then clean up any excess with a paper towel.

    How reliable is the 1989 mercedes 300e? In the process of buying one. Also the pro and cons owning one of these.

    • @riffraffjazz

      I can only speak of the one we have and I can't talk highly enough, in the last 5 years it has gone on many a long trip, smooth, economical and any problems have been minor and mainly normal wear, they are built to last forever. Look for one with no rust etc. Good luck, Paul.

    Hey, greetings from Texas! i have a question i was wondering if you could help me with. i have a 91 300e, i overheated it when i bought it, i fixed the cooling issue, but now it runs very rough. It wont start or stay running unless im giving it gas, and it sounds very bad. It also takes a long time to accelerate. Any idea what it could be? Theres no coolant in the oil from what i can tell. thanks

    • @riffraffjazz

      the air flow sensor plate could be in the wrong position or not in the rest position, oxygen sensor faulty, temp sensor faulty. Any or all of these give grief, also check the over voltage relay. Regards, Paul.

    I have 1988 W126 300SEL
    When I cold start the engine, the idle is around 500 rpm, but when the engine is warm up, the idle will go up to 1200 rpm.
    Which parts should I go to check and replace?
    Thank You very much.

    • @riffraffjazz
      @riffraffjazz  7 лет назад +3

      Hi, could be your auxiliary air valve, take it off & give it a
      clean, also test the idle switch, which is a micro switch near the fuel
      distributor, switches from the throttle linkage and check for vacuum
      leaks. Good luck, Paul.

    • @riffraffjazz
      @riffraffjazz  7 лет назад +2

      Check that the auxiliary air valve hoses aren't cracked.
      The coolant temp sensor is the single most important sensor
      for determining air-fuel mixture at start up and during warm up. Once the
      oxygen sensor heats up and provides reliable data, that sensor gets #1 status. So go for the temp sensor, good luck, Paul.

    Do not touch this screw. Leak will occure

    • @DaytonCarCare
      @DaytonCarCare Год назад

      No fuel goes through the top of the allen adjustment. It's a mixture adjustment screw. Now if you removed the allen adjustment it would leak, but then the car probably would even run.
